Deena stans would’ve flipped it saying Effie copied her and then pr would’ve twisted it saying Effie released hers after Deena’s in order to get back at them for kicking her out of the Dreams
A similar thing happened with a UK Girl Group called Girlthing who couldn't even get out of the gate. They were the latest discovery by Simon Cowell who turned down The Spice Girls. They did a Song called Pure & Simple but it wasn't released but it was a Hit For The UK Popstars Group Hear'Say (2001) while the other four moved on, one member Lyndsey hoped to make a comeback on a show called the big reunion. i'm probably late to the dream girls analytical discussions, but i just noticed the story the changed lyrics tell. in effie/C.C.'s version, it's "...you really don't have the time...you've got one night only..." but deena/curtis's version goes ..."I really don't have the time... I've got one night only..." which is SUCH a perfect change. effie and c.c. (in the song pov) are resigned to being taken advantage of or at least left behind when they're no longer convenient. curtis's disco version is different because curtis is not a man women leave--he's always the one leaving. the tone is also way too cheeky and upbeat to be a song about being jilted in love. so the change works really well for deena's performance. anyway, i love dream girls
Nothing against beyonce and I know that was what they were going towards, but I like how Hudson sang this like she took her heart out and set it on the table
That was the point of this part of the movie. Curtis stole Effie's song and made it more dancable. He took out all of the soul because he didn't want her to have a comeback and he knew her version was good. But that was acting. It wasn't Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson. It was Deena Jones and Effie White.
minnysis3 that was a great interpretation and summary! the comment saying that Beyoncés character had less soul in the performance perfectly exemplifies, that they were successful in sending the message they wanted to with this scene.
