Lol. My dad had a small construction company. He was the full time electrician and plumber (he had gone to trade school for 6 years and was union journey man in both) two framers, 2 sheetrock guys who helped with framing. And a painter. I loved going to jobs and working. He told me I could take over company when he retired if I could do and two of the trades to union quality (which used to mean something) I learned painting and sheetrock, then plumbing. I didn't want to do electrical because I freaking hated crawling under houses. I did good at framing until it came to door and window installation. Then every cuss word I knew came out. In English Spanish Italian and Portuguese. Sadly, the huge wave of illegal immigrants who were willing to work for less than minimum wage killed my dream. The big businesses hired these untrained guys who learned by the monkey see monkey do method. The quality was abysmal. The big companies that build whole new neighborhoods, didn't give a shit about anything but price. About 18 months ago, I built a 1500 Sq ft rental house on my land while teaching my 12 year old. I still hired someone for the doors lmfao
Boy, ain't that the truth! My Dad, who was a sailor, used cuss words I never knew existed, He get on a roll and I'd have to keep telling him other people could hear him and he'd just get louder. So, whaddya do?

I owe you a great big thank you. I've known a couple carpenters that have said that hanging a door isn't as easy as it looks. We want to change out all of our doors and when we priced it out we decided to at least try one ourselves before hiring someone. My husband watched your video(s) and did 2 so far perfectly without even throwing a hammer through a wall.

@@helenlawson3203 Shimming is harder than hanging, imo. Especially if you're renovating considering flooring & flooring changes.
I watched a dozen video's on how to hang a pre-hung door and YOURS was the only one to discuss the gap between finished floor and bottom of the door. Thank you. You know your stuff!
thanks Jeff...this really helps me. I'm so tired of paying "handymen" who say they know how to put a door up but then there is rub or it's not level. I've decided to do it myself. I have removed the damaged door jab so only the rough space remains. You make it look so easy. Here goes nothing! Thanks for the step by step, patient, elementary instruction. Using a multi tool is what professionals do. Using a knife is what we did in the 80’s.

To meet fire ratings in my area we have to shim behind all hinges, 2- 3" screws through top hinge and 1 through middle and bottom hinge.

Thanks for all the pointers ..you make it look so easy ... took me a bout 1 and a half maybe two hours but it is plumb and level and almost flush ...flush at the top and bottom but not in the middle ? old house i guess not quite as straight as the door frame .. abtw i like the background music :-)

I thought the shims go behind the hinges? Do they go behind where ever the door doesn't look level? and as well is it always 3 sets per side or does it again depend on playing with the frame and whatever it takes to go level? thanks
When working with mdf 3 sets is good but when using wood you need to make adjustments based on the warping of the wood. sometimes you need a lot more and sometimes 3 sets behind the hinges is good. The process is dictated by the end result you are trying to achieve.
True, thanks for the reply. I guess what i mean is in your vid, your shims are not directly behind the hinges, sorry i'm a noob trying to learn as i go. Do they always have to go directly behind the hinges?(the shims)
1. Another question i have is with regard to the amount of nails per side of jamb and the distance vertically and horizontally between the nails? 2. How many nails per jamb side do you recommend? I saw another video and the guy says ten nails per side. 3. And finally another other question i have is should i put 2 nails thru the shims or is one enough? Thanks for your kindness in answering
as a rule that is good practice.
more is better. If you are trimming the door right away just a few is fine. but if you run the risk of twisting if not enough.
I agree with many comments, great video. The fat end of the shim is hard to score and remove. What do you recommend?

Michael Doyle----Your floor probably isn`t level . In that case , you cut off a little off one side of the door jamb with a circular saw . By little , I mean 1/4 " to 1/2 " . Look at the video from " This Old House " . Make sure that your top jamb is level . Both the right vertical jamb and the left vertical jamb will be an equal distance off the floor , to allow for the flooring that will be under the door ..
What if your door opening isnt as close to the size of the door itself? Example most of of mine have 1-1 1/2 ince on each side of the prehung door… so i have to use alot of shims… is that still okay?

vertical measurement is called
"plumb". at about 1:50 he says to stack shims until level. shims work in pairs (opposite directions). he has like 6 shims on one side and one on the other. any measurable distance (1/4"+) should use plywood and then shims
You must be blind and deaf. He didn't say or do either.
At that point, he was just shimming between the bottom of the door and the floor. It was temporary. He removed it after the hinge side was secure.
You did not shim above the door jam. Is that because you shimmed the bottom to ensure it was leveled?

Just the sides. the top is fixed with the casing as you trim the door out. Cheers!

What if I removed the door from its frame & then install the frame and then hinge the door back on? Any issues w/that?
Not if you install perfect level, plumb and flush. I like to use the door as a visual guide. I find it works well with those cheaply made jambs .

I have to do this on a finished floor and the jamb is half on a tile floor and half on a hardwood floor, where there is about an inch in height difference and it makes a funky transition. I'll have to use a contour gauge I'm guessing and will not be able to shim under the jambs.

Yes you can just change the doors, but you will have to buy a kit for the lock holes. Or you can buy the doors from a specialty store they will do the holes for you
Looks good but I need to replace an interior door over carpet. Are there special considerations I need to include? I worry enough about the door hanging and swinging level but I do not want to damage the carpet when I remove the old frame.
very important to install the new jamb in the same location as the old one. Other than that the install is the same. Just make sure you start with the hinge jamb side and build out the jamb to contact the carpet. Cheers.

Do you know about clip in door frames and casing?
I am looking for a product that conceals the fasteners for the door frame and casing install.The idea is that you do not have to nail them in place so we do not have to caulk them and perform paint touch-ups after install. I personally haven’t seen one in Canada but they do exist in other countries.
Do you know a canadian manufaturer/supplier where i can get those?

I like to use hide screws or sometimes called deck screws. The head is the size of a finishing nail. It uses a small hex bit to install. The screw head counter sink themselves and the screws don’t suck the frame beyond what you adjusted it to, like a regular screw can do. And again, they counter sink themselves so you can easily fill over the hole.
AKA trim head deck screws. Thanks for mentioning it, that's what I'll be using.

What should my rough opening be for a 28 x80 openkng? I was thinking 2 in more than width of door and 1/2 in on each side = 31. Is that correct?
Hi Peter your rough frame should be 2 inches wider and 3 inches taller. Cheers! As long as it is reasonably level. if in doubt a little wider won't hurt.Cheers!

I have a house built in 1952. They used 2x3 n not 2x4. I have to put in a frame. The door I removed is 30". Do I make the rough opening jamb to jamb 32"? The header I had to remove from carpet floor to sheet rock is 81". Should I have an eighth to a half inch clearance from top of door to header? I had to take a lot down cause builders cut in half 2x3s instead of using another 2x3 as a jack stud. I don't know much but that was wrong. Let me know.
Hi Peter, the height was designed for a 78" tall door which you can still buy today. yes the rough in width should be 2 inches wider than the door slab itself as you described. Cheers!
Standard seems to be a 30x80 for a rough opening of 32x82 at home depot.

sorry dude not yet. remove drywall and if you have room then simply cut out the space you need for a door rough in and close up.

I like to replace one of hinge screws with a screw that will go through hinge into stud. With shims behind hinge.

I do the same thing but what do you guys do when the door stop is already installed on you want to screw on the opposite side of the hinges. What can you do for that clean look and conceal the screws?
FrancoMango you can use some 2 1/2” deck screws on the striker plate. Other than that, I can’t think of anything to secure the jamb side without taking off the door stop. Why do you want to screw that side?

What brand of pre-hung door did you use? I have been researching between Menards, Home Depot, and Lowes and their mdf white doors have very bad reviews. I don't want to paint other wise I would use wood doors.
These doors were purchased at classic moldings in Ottawa. definitely find a different door supplier than the box stores. Cheers!

I did this similarly on my door in my.older house. The frame is not perfect because its older. I had a huge problem during the summer when it was humid where the door jam actually bowed from the pressure. How do I avoid this and allow for the door to open properly? Is there a rule for expansion? It works perfectly 9 mo out if the year.
instyall a dehumidifier or a/c. or cut down the bottom of the jamb1/8 and add caulking. it will expand without buckling. Cheers

Is there a specific height the door need to be for carpet compared to tile or other hard flooring?

When I put the door in the hole and have the hinge side completely level, I find that my door doesn't shut, but if remove enough shims to make the door close the door is no longer level. Also- the wall that i am installing the door on was not completely straight when i started. Thoughts as to what I am doing wrong?
If the house or the wall isn't level then you may find this problem. Remember the first goal is to make the door operate. secondly make the door not swing open or close on its own. third is to make it level. I would rather install a door off level and not have to cut it to fit! In the future try to make sure the hole is 2" larger than the door in both directions. this usually leaves enough room even if it is out of level.
I normally watch your videos before i try to tackle any project and making sure everything is level is always my biggest objective as i know the importance. The house i am working on however, is quite old and been though quite a few different remodels unprofessionally. Is there any kind of issues I should expect to see in the future if the door is not level?
It may always want to stay open or close behind you. If the floor has dropped on one side it won't be noticeable as the floor and ceiling will be off as well.

You level with shims on the hinge side and shim at header and striker side for just even gaps. Is this correct?
no need to shim the header.

What kind and size screws? Also can I use nails?
Like someone else put it, door slab determines the reveal, not the level. When installing doors (I’m a third gen carpenter) we don’t even have the level out.
Also, most pre-hungs in US have the strikes already (jamb stock come pre-molded). I nail with 2 1/2” 16gag to set door (note: never nail through shins - I like to nail just below shims and always shim just below the hinges). Ones painters are done I (not the painters) reinstall the slabs into the jambs useing a 2 1/2 to 3” set screw in the furthest set screw hole in hinges. The adheres hing to framing vs to jamb only. Not having shims directly behind hinges allows to tight hinges for adjustments for relaxing over the first year and/or lumber twist (for those who still frame with green lumber).
I want to see how to replace door…. Into existing frame…. My 2 tips I lay old door on sawhorses line up new door via the precut knob hole. Then you know how much trim off top / bottom / hinge side.
Leave hinges attached to old door. So you can xfer lines to new door..
Just screw in top hinge fully middle and bottom leave slightly loose. When hang out in top hinges pin loosen middle and bottom hinge slightly. That way you have flex to make middle and bottom hinges line up to insert pins. Then lastly tighten up bottom and middle hinges on frame and door. Cause if u try hang either middle and bottom hinges tight it’s guaranteed they won’t line up. The will both be a 64th out of going together.
Every door I've seen comes with pre-installed door stops, how do you hide the screws in that case?

Every time I install a door the top handle side of the door seems to rub on the frame and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
you are assuming that the floor is level, which it is not. Shim the jamb until the top is level.
