- Genndy Tartakovsky's Popeye is infamous for being axed by Sony despite universal interest in what little was shown off of the project. Now, the entire movie (in an unfinished form) is out there for anyone to see, and again, people mourn what might have been. My take is a little different.

The fact they said The Emoji Movie was worthy of replacing Popeye is sheer slander and incredibly disrespectful to animation as a whole. I'm not as angry I sound but wow the disrespect
For public attention it’s a smart move, younger generation won’t appreciate Popeye and make less money for Sony.

Ugh don't get me started. It angers me that voice actors are so disrespected just so actors can be in animated movies too. It angers me that production company's act as if no one will go see 2d movies and don't even give it a chance when it's a booming industry in Japan and clearly people still like it. Even children who are used to seeing 3d animation will sit down and laugh at Looney Tunes. This art form is constantly disrespected when it's such a significant part of pop culture.
I'd take Tom Kenny and Grey DeLisle over Maya Rudolph and James Corden anyday.

Sometimes they're spectacular, sometimes they're great, sometimes they're adequate, but most times they suck! For every Toy Story, there's an Arctic Dogs (shivers with PTSD cringe), for every Shrek, there's a Foodfight. For every Up, there's a Norm of the North. And in this case for every Popeye, there's an Emoji Movie.
Wait so the cancelled this for the emoji movie (which flopped) and Genndy Tartakovsky just said "fine, I'll just upload the storyboard recordings myself" and released the whole movie unofficially?!
The guy is a legend ! I hope it not only get's greenlit again but teach other companies to try something similar with their cancelled movies, like Disney's Gigantic or Newt. Might be as big as when they revived walt disney's own Frozen (yeah, it was a scrapped movie they revived).
Genndy likely didn't upload this animatic. An unsung hero did.

When will they learn "Popeye but not Popeye" is not what people want. Give us creators that love the original... Genndy needs to be able to finish this movie.
They'll never learn. Because the people that make this kind of decisions have no connection with reality, they only read polls and studies and marketing research and they base EVERYTHING on that.
And when a movie made with heart and soul succeeds, contrary to all their studies... they're surprised.
Sony is hellbent on making sure no one ever sees that animatic. I myself, along with others, have had my Internet Archive account locked for attempting to share it there.

Sony needs to focus on making PlayStations…the last (and maybe only) really good movie they did was Into the Spiderverse, and I think that was a happy accident more than anything else…and I can almost guarantee the reason the sequel has been delayed so many times is because the suits decided to tinker with it.

They don’t like Popeye in the sense that they don’t like Olive Oil. They don’t like the damsel in distress. Even though Olive Oil is probably the most accurate description of a great many women these days. Now if she would have been a bad ass sassy chick with an attitude that took no shit, and gave Bluto a beating while making Popeye look like a fool, now THAT would of been green lit with a HUGE budget.

If that's Amy Pascal's best excuse, it's a goddamn lame one. There's nothing inherently wrong with the trope, there's plenty of female characters I know that are damsels in distress that are good, competent, and charming regardless if they don't know how to defend themselves, which is true in reality as not everyone is a fighter, especially women who most of them often fall back on relying on their men to be their sword and shield, which also is nothing inherently wrong with.
Spoilers, but Olive was also likeable, her femininity was never compromised, and her whole arc is learning to stand up for herself and stop letting everyone in her life tell her what to do, control her, and make her own decisions, and she did this while she was on her adventures with Popeye. I know this because I also saw the leaked movie.

Just imagine thousands of 3d animators working together on internet to replicate the exact models, texture and style from that teaser and use the storyboard as reference to make the whole movie. That would be a big fat middle finger to Sony and as a 3d animator that's something I would 100% love to participate.

Let not forget. If the movie did not meet all or most of the social/political checklist items required for today's movies to get green lit, it was never going to make it to a screen for public viewing.

Fun fact: Tom Kenny is one of the few cartoon voice-actors who has a strong presence in Hollywood movies. In a lot of big executives' eyes he IS a celebrity. He played live-action roles in comedies for decades. He was chosen as the voice of Bullwinkle in the new Dreamworks short a few years ago, and was the voice of Rabbit in the 2011 Winnie-the-Pooh movie (also adding onto the 3 Spongebob movies). There is a VERY good possibility that he would've made it into the final cut of this movie too, but I do not feel good about any of the other actors in this animatic. They're definitely temp. You notice the Sea Hag has two voices, one of which is male, indicating major story edits were made since the first one's recording. Tom Kenny does NONE of Popeye's trademark laughing aside from that intro scene, and none of his mumbling either, which would have probably been saved for pick-ups set to completed animation.
Oftentimes the first voices you hear in these animatics are not actors at all, but the production team lending a voice to play out the scene. Now if they happen to have an actor onboard early, you very well may hear them in an animatic, but using a team member as a stand-in is very common practice.
He was the voice of Skids in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Well, Kenny did do Popeye's laughter in the Powerpuff Girls, as Mitch Mitchelson; He can do the Popeye laugh, but it's weird how he doesn't in the Popeye animatic.
Tom Kenny's vocal take on Popeye is both reminiscent of the classic voice and also something new and different, I really wished this movie came out, at least we have these leaks but man, this would've brought a new life to the fandom and also in general would've been a enjoyable movie with Tom Kenny killing it as Popeye, I'm gonna watch and review the leak myself as well because this is a huge opportunity and it's better not to miss it, and also visually this movie is a treat too, from the original teaser in it's stylized 3D look to even the storyboard art, it's just so good...how and why Sony decided to throw this away for some lousy cash in about emojis (of all things) is very questionable
I loved how Tom brings his own charm to the character since in most versions you see Popeye as grumpy with a snarl but here he looks happy and cheerful along with the fact that he doesn't have a corncob pipe and he's wearing sneakers instead of dress shoes.
@@quinna5537 Yeah, Tom Kenny is great, and he really brings his own magic to whatever role he's casted in, from making SpongeBob the icon that it is now, to his other roles like the Ice King and so on, he's really talented

Popeye's start as a newspaper comic strip makes the animatic's state as the definitive version of this movie particularly interesting.
I was lucky to be a party to seeing it as well with friends, it's perfect. It's funny, it has heart, and it doesn't wear out its welcome. I'm sad that this film was never given a chance, but I'm glad to have seen it.

It would take plenty of years for the internet to do it, as is the case with most reanimated collabs, but a whole movie? it would be simply extraordinary if they managed to finish it anywhere along this decade

Genndy understood Popeye and knew how to make it work. The visual gags, the timing, the character designs. Sony you robbed us of what would have definitely made money unlike the stupid Emoji Movie which flopped.

I don't know what Sony was thinking by scrapping the Popeye movie for...the emoji movie (uggh). The Popeye movie would have done alot better in the theater and possibly introduced a new generation of kids to classic one eyed, spinach lov'n Sailor Man.
I agree, it probably would have done great in theaters.
But the movie is not in keeping with the perceived trend in social demands. Translation, Sony probably did think the movie made the progressive cut.
The Popeye movie getting scrapped for the Emoji movie is one of the frustrating stories I ever heard and just one reason I threw away my dream of being a filmmaker: You could be an ambitious storyteller but at the end of the day, the studio execs have the final say even if they're in the wrong. This happens way too often and it just isn't worth it
It makes no sense to me that Popeye was shelved but a movie with literal taking poop was released.
Part of me wants this movie the get the "re-animated" treatment. Both for fun, and as a nice "told you so" to Sony.
If I remember correctly, Maurice LaMarche (Popeye on Popeye and Son) and Billy West (Popeye on "The Quest for Pappy"), both veteran voice actors, have both said that doing the Popeye voice was the hardest voice they've ever had to do in their careers. You can't just grab a Chris Pratt and tell him to do the part. It would've been very difficult to find a prominent celebrity to replace Tom Kenny in this.
Its a shame we'll never see it full potential, but the film we got instead of the finished product, is messy but its messiness is what made it great and charming. So overall, an amazingly flawed masterpiece

Watched it, and it was a pretty fun ride. Olive Oil I feel was kind of the best part, there was something about her I really liked. Also Bluto's small amount of screentime was kind of perfect for his role. It was also nice to see a full movie animatic like that, especially as I'm working on my story art.
Actual voice actors!! Instead of hearing Kevin Hart and The Rock every movie.

Also Sony has a leaker problem, first the storyboards of Spider-Man 4 get leaked BEFORE NWH came out, then NWH itself started getting leaks, and here's yet another case, Popeye, I know there might be other examples of stuff being leaked from Sony but rn Spider-Man 4 storyboards is what comes to mind in familiarity with how Popeye here got leaked
Genndy Tartakovsky currently had a deal with Cartoon Network Studios & Warner Bros. Animation, & directed his upcoming films Fixed & Black Knight at Sony Pictures Animation.
The fact that Sony at the time saw more potential in The Emoji Movie still makes me scratch my head, the animation in that trailer looked so fun and cartoony like the way old cartoons move
We need to make a reanimated collab of this so we can watch the movie with finished animation! It's really amazingly made, from the writing to the sound design to the animatics, and it deserves to be polished up a bit! Plus I think it would be really fun to try animating bits and pieces of it in Genndy Tartakovsky's signature fluid animation style!

After seeing his interpretation of Olive Oil’s character model, I think he would do an excellent job with the Smurfs as either a film, show, or mini series
4:30 - Update: an entry for the leaked version has now restored to Letterboxd, under the title "Popeye (Animatic)".
It doesn't have many reviews yet; the most extensive one is a negative one from MaxTheMovieGuy (who is normally pretty good when it comes to opinions about animated films).
If we're lucky, this could go the way of the Deadpool Leak and cause the movie to get a greenlight like it did. I fail to see how this movie failed while Emoji movie got the greenlight, whoever made that decision needs to get fired

A similar project that might fit under the 'finished/unfinished' heading would be 'The Thief and the Cobbler', especially contrasting the released 'finished' versions versus the 'recobbled' version that makes use of a lot roughs and animatics.

If they were to bring that project back to business, Sony should release this on Netflix as this state of the art CG-animated TV series with a theatrical soundtrack, just like what they did with Pual Ruegger's projects such as Animaniacs for example.
What's the pilot called that you worked on exactly? Also I heard that the creator of this movie might make this movie again but with Warner Brothers instead of Sony and he would start from scratch. He would also make it with the same company who made the Cuphead cartoon (so maybe Warner Brothers will distribute the movie and the company who made the Cuphead cartoon will produce it).
I remember seeing the teaser and getting so excited! I’ve always loved Popeye and I was pretty disappointed when the movie never came out
So, Sony wanted a NEW Popeye movie after killing the the first one? Why not have just started the original back up, would have saved money since things were already set.
Animatics are really entertaining and it's sad they are unseen by the general public and often deleted at the end of a production. If a studio really wanted to save money they could release a movie as an animatic with "temp" voices and I'm sure there would be an audience for it. I've had people tell me they prefer watch animatics more than a finished film because they can "see the drawings."

I saw it too, and I really enjoyed it. I could see them changing a few things here and there in the final version, but over all, it seemed like a really solid movie, and a lot of it had me laughing.
It was great actually having some more context to Olive’s “hairy children” line - the test scene alone when she says it perfectly sets up how wonderfully neurotic she is (provided you can chalk it up to being just a random thought that popped in her head).

One thing that I'll add to this discussion: as much as we like to bemoan the lost media aspect of this project, even if it DID get released, there's no guarantee that it would be released in the state it was in during the animatic phase. It is completely within the realm of possibility that Sony would've mandated that the crew add things that would've ruined the movie, like modern gen z references, unnecessary pop music, or shoehorned overly cute animal characters ("we gotta have something to compete with the minions!").

I too have watched that movie, and have been a long time fan of Popeye and so has my family! My brother was the guy who painstakingly compiled a list of his powers and feats for Popeyes death battle bio. It means so much to me that we all agree that this animatic is Miles and miles above the movie that it was scrapped for.
You know the KFS version of popeye is not dead. There’s no update on it and yet i highly deny it being cancelled again.

I remember back in 2014/15 around that time really wanting to see this with my mom, because this was one of the rare cases where I felt we shared a love of something, especially since she grew up with the show but to hear it was cancelled for the comparitively, painfully okay to bad Emoji Movie, makes me kind of sad, but I am glad it's available in some form now

That more on the anti-tobacco laws then really anything woke, there heavy restrictions in place especially in readily available distribution for child related media and sadly Popeye falls under this category.

Only other movie I know like this was the Thief and the Cobbler. Though that had years of funding production troubles and an edited film did get a commercial vhs release. The re cobbled cut with the unfinished scenes is on UA-cam. Its a funny and beatiful animated film. That kind of was spitefull crushed by Disney's Aladdin.

It's a shame how so much love and care was put in, all for it to fade away. It always has to be "What's hip right now" and "What's popular". Such a missed opportunity to revive a classic character.
