Oh oh oh! And less we forget Yggdrasil. The name of the house and what it represents. A sacred tree that from its core sprouts the universe. And it’s an ash tree. And the word ASH is referenced in the book over THIRTY times. I could go on forever but it’s close to “lights out”
Best review I've seen so far. I'd say House of Leaves is my absolute favourite because no other book has had such a big impact on me both during and after I finished reading it. I'm not what I used to be.
BEST FUCKING REVIEW SO FAR HANDS DOWN! You don’t say the book is the scariest thing you ever read. You don’t talk about misleading concepts. You don’t babble on for 30 minutes. You get straight to the meat. But you did miss the biggest clue Danielwski left for all of us. “This is not for you” This is a love letter. And the only one who has the same voice as Johnny and Zampano is Pelafina. But… Then again it is in Johnny’s font. So…maybe it’s a love letter to Johnny’s mother. An apology. He left her to die like Navy left that girl to die. Maybe there’s no Zampano. Holy shit! It all makes sense!!! Johnny is crazy like his mother. Forever looking for that love. Someone to save him. So he invents the story of the Navidison Record. Where Navy becomes obsessed with the void in this house. And even though he goes “mad” (Just like Pelafina) he leaves his wife and “children” to do deeper into madness. And it’s only with true love, someone to go against all their fear and proclaim it is “he” (Navy) saved. It’s all about Johnny and his grief and longing for some one to love him and save him.
it's the way that all narratives are possible that amazes me the pelafina narrative ties closely to the minotaur zampano's makes sense if we see him as johnny's dad johnny's is just another maze, with him slowly turning into will navidson and then there's karen's, which completely changes the way the story could be seen this book is truly a labyrinth
Perfectly captured the insanity that comes with trying to solve an unsolvable riddle. Or find the centre of a maze where the walls move. I shall have to think hard about toes now.
Just finished this book an hour ago. Thanks for this video! I knew it was complicated, and I got a lot of it, but clearly I missed a lot as well. I'll definitely have to re-read this badboy. Must say, the breath fog was a very nice touch. Greetings from Toronto!
Love this review and your creative video presentation. Just finished House of Leaves a few days ago and still thinking about it. You capture the experience of reading this so well.
After puzzling over your challenge of "WHO WROTE THIS?!" for two days, I believe that I have an answer. Well, it can't be Johnny. He didn't have the education. Not Pelafina, she didn't have access to the reference materials required. For a moment, I had thought it might be Johnny, when, at the bottom of pg. 517, he ties 5-1/2 minutes to his mother being taken away, but I believe, now that there is no answer. This is no accident. The riddles run you around as though you're in a labyrinth. The inability to solve the riddles means that there is no escape.
I don't think it's an accident that when you've 'finished' reading the book, you find yourself physically somewhere in the middle. Where that is can be a different spot for each reader.
i bought this book a while ago, unfortunately i wasnt able to read it past the first few pages when they start taking measurements. mine had red and blue texts on it. i may pick this book up again
Zampanò is based on a character in the movie La strada. The film tells the story of Gelsomina, a simple-minded young woman bought from her mother by Zampanò , a brutish strongman who takes her with him on the road. ([Gelsomina, pelafina] yet another echo)
+GoreQuill NachoVidal Pickles is not my real surname. I have a Polish-esque Ukrainian last name, similar to Danielewski. I don't share it because it's unique to my family.
I'm not going to watch your review as I have not read it yet lol but am definitely looking forward to seeing it after I'm done. I just want to know is it worth reading? I have just picked it up and have had some friends tell me it wasn't worth it which sucks 'cus I really thought it was something I'd love. I really still hope it is.
+Akashic_Books It is completely worth it. It is definitely an experience and one that continues after your done reading the physical book as well. It is unsettlingly scary but worth the nightmares and worthy of the postmodern classic genre.
+Pickles Reads You have just given me back my excitement about reading it! Thank you. Definitely the reason I picked it up in the first place as I am a MASSIVE horror fan. We share very similar tastes in books so I trust you lol.

Best Review I've been able to find. Opened up a bunch of ideas to me. Want to open it up again. Enter the house again.
I come back to rewatch this review so often. It still gives me chills thinking about the book many years later
It was always my understanding that Johnny & Zampano are the same person.
That Zampano is Johnny's given name.
This review accurately depicts how I feel everytime I reread this book.
Perfectly captured the insanity that comes with trying to solve an unsolvable riddle. Or find the centre of a maze where the walls move. I shall have to think hard about toes now.
Dante was a poet, which is why he was selected to journey through hell, purgatory, and paradise. Pelafina was an elegant writer in her notes.
Just found out this book, read/watched some reviews about it. Yours is the best one out there its not even close. Very inspiring
I’ve watched quite a few reviews of this book. This video was the most insightful and thought provoking

david z danielewski wrote it for his mother who died in an institute.
Thanks so much for helping me understand this insanely complex and profoundly beautiful book
It is one of my favourites. :D
this video is absolute masterpiece in itself
This is my FAVORITE review of this book!! I have just started reading this book. Just subscribed to your channel and truly enjoying it.
+Bobbi Jo Thiering Thanks. I hope you enjoy the book.

I actually finished it physically at the end, wich storyvice left me with anxiously depressing anticlimax.
15:23 gave me a really purple feeling right there
This is undoubtedly one of the best reviews of the book. Thank you so much 🥰
Thank you

"5 minute hallway" is a real song by Poe. She only has two albums out but damn she was so good at her craft! Miss her.
the authors sister.
I love that the band he meets is the author's sister.
Awesome review!! The best I've seen so far!
+Keppy Boone Thanks.
Correction: Zampanos letter is on pg. 543 not 592

Dude don’t be a dick, she was great.
I'm surprised you didn't pick up on the Time Travel aspect of the book.
