      i just picked up the pto and pump. stopped off to get 5 gallons of synthetic oil for the transmission. then i dropped off the driveshaft. i am going to pu the pto and pump on now.....slow and steady!

    You folks know how to keep a project moving along. For tool enhancements, how about a chainfall hoist that would mount on the gradall boom? Having the ability to manually affect finite vertical travel would be a big advantage.

      i have a big chain fall but it is always so much work and time to go get it and set it up foe such little time of use. if i had it on a rolling frame...that would be very helpfull!

    ha ha ha now i know why the mini van is cheap to run as your filling it up... don't worry i get the same take my car its cheap to run and its usually dead empty to when i get in it.. that black looked good on chassis too covered a lot of the pitting.. keep up the great videos and thanks for continuing to provide them too

      I am glad you enjoy them mick! we will see how that 395a works out...you can for sure tell it has a tar base. the smell is very strong.

    • @mickhulsen6825
      @mickhulsen6825 7 років тому +1

      so would a thick second coating get rid of the last of the pitting??

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому +1

      it might...i havnt looked at it yet today. i was told that it will level out with heat as it dries.

    She is a very clever girl, van will come back with a full tank, the windscreen washer will be filled and the tyre inflated. The dump truck is really common along and the chassis is looking good. I did have my heart in my mouth a few times when you were lining the chassis sides up with the Gradall (best tool in the box).
    Great video, who put all the bolts back in? Waiting for part 4

      the same person put all the bolts in that drilled all the 180 holes!. dont worry she was there to be sure i did it right! just another day in paradise...

    My wife and daughter set me up like that all the time. The other one they're good for is when I get in one of their cars for the first time in weeks, and ask them, "Hey, how long has your car been making that noise?!" The answer is invariably "What noise?" 😒

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому

      right ....what noise??? my answer is always "the one you hear when you turn the radio down!!!!"

  • @davidbowser2395

    Have a serious question. With adding a second rail. Doesn’t that mean you have to re adjust and move your springs out to get the frame in between. Been on the fence doing this to my single frame B model Mack and wanna put a dump body on it as well. Isn’t there a worry for the springs to rub against the tires from being too close? How much more closer is it to the rear tires now with the extra railing added

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  2 роки тому

      depends on the suspension and how the hangers are set up. some are able to absorb the extra on each side. just have to look at it.

    it's getting there. how did the holes line up? I use a tapered reamer if I have a hole that's off a little. what's the plan for an oil tank? do you use fleetpride for driveline stuff,?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому +1

      the holes were perfect with the exception of one that was a hair off but it still went in without reaming. i was very happy. the original holes were 11/16" with 5/8" bolts and i drilled mine 5/8". so layout was very important. the oil tank is mounted in the sub assembly. i have 3 shops between 1 to 1 1/2 hours from me. i use 1 of them fairly regular. they are usually pretty quick and i have never had a problem. i just picked up the pto and of course it is wrong! i should have looked up the part number myself!

  • @jonzie1228
    @jonzie1228 7 років тому +1

    Did you cut some of the frame rails off behind the axle? -OR- just move the rear axle fwd and leave rails same length?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому +2

      there was about 22' of frame behind the cab. i moved the axle to 84" cab to center of axle. i then cut 11'8" off of the frame.

    good call. you may end up with some hodge podge setup that you wouldn't be able to repair in the future. Are you using an Eaton setup?

    • @j.c.smithprojects

      muncie pto on spicer transmission. think about in a few years when i take that pto off and have forgotten that the identification tag isnt the right one for what the pto really is and i go to put it on something else ....i will be standing there scratching my head like a stooge saying "the part number is right....but why doesnt it fit"?

  • @mikeduhm5754

    that sucks with the PTO. seems like that's the way it goes.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому

      i even went in with the transmission model and serial number. i looked it up online and found the right one. they want to take this one apart and change the gear configuration and the output shaft configuration then put it back together. i would rather wait and get the right one.

    Because of wheelbase change, does the steering geometry have to be changed?

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому

      ya472 the only adjustment on the truck is the toe.

    • @ThisOldMan-ya472
      @ThisOldMan-ya472 7 років тому

      ok.. found information on Ackerman steering principle. The steering arm angle would change.

    • @j.c.smithprojects
      @j.c.smithprojects  7 років тому

      the ackerman principle is based on an outside point measuring the angles and path in which the tires follow. allowing for the inside tire in the turn to have a more turning angle to travel a shorter distance faster than the outside tire with less turning angle traveling a longer distance at a slower speed. the steering angles did not change. the steering arm angle will not change. the angle in which the tires travel around and outside fixed point changed but nothing on the truck itself has changed. the turning radius just improved greatly.

    • @ThisOldMan-ya472
      @ThisOldMan-ya472 7 років тому

      which is calculated, dependent on wheelbase.

    It doesn't matter how many PTO's and pumps you have , l find you never have the right combination for the transmission or for the bed. Worse is when someone has taken the tag off the transmission,
