    I agree with you on most of your points. I hope I never get too into the fountain pen niche to become a vintage pen buyer.
    By the way, I enjoy your new style. And did I see you channeling a bit of Peter Draws here..?
    PS. Could you do a bit of tweaking to your tech setup and increase the sound volume of the on camera sections? Your videos are notably quiter than the average YT vid so I have to crank up the volume while watching and now the ads - which I don't mind - are blasting straight into my ears.

      You know you’re not the first person to say that about my sound. I’m going to look into whether or not I can arrange a fix with what I have, and if not, I’ll probably be investing in some new equipment to fix it. Thank you for pointing it out to me.
      As far as Peter Draws, I LOVE his channel! If I’m channeling him, it’s probably unconscious, but I think I’m just finally getting more comfortable being filmed. I’m kind of a naturally goofy person. Thanks for your kind words!

    Hahaha Love your sassiness😂. I think a lot of them are fair complaints and some I agree with personally, but I think the point of contention comes down to the reason why someone uses a fountain pen. For example, I have more than 10 bottles of ink but I don't have 1 black ink cus I use fountain pens for fun and the experience. I'd just use a ballpoint when I need that practicality. And yeah I will proudly do my figure of 8 with a smile on my face hahaha

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  2 роки тому

      It’s true. On this channel, I have no desire to take myself seriously.
      The black ink thing is really more of a practicality thing for me too. When I have to digitize my art, the high contrast really helps. For most people, that’s not a concern, and most inks read just fine. I do have a few very light colored inks which confuse me from time to time. I’m pretty easy to confuse though. :)

    Wow! Such bravery, such assertion, such opinions! Truly the man that needs MORE subscribers for such boldness!
    My opinions:
    10: Thank you for grounding the conversation in basic physics! Inks (i.e. mostly composed of water) are WET. You won't find that opinion on any other channel people!
    9: Screw Caps>Snap caps; may i humbly ask, o wise one, what about Visconti hook safe or Visconti/Monteverde Magnetic caps? Are they basically just snap caps? i need your seemingly unending wisdom!
    8: Demonstrator Pens are useful for the note-taking your own kind (speaking of teachers right now) impose on students. I know you said its not up for debate 😉, so i merely ask for clarification from your wisdom when students need to take many classes of notes?
    7: Black is the best color for drawing, i agree, but blue is the best color for writing because black is business attire, blue is personal (and stands out from black & white pages on forms).
    6: Plastic is plastic (while writing with a Sailor Pro gear, you are the best Stephen)
    5: Use a dip pen if you want to use you bottles at home right? That's your inevitable next step sir to underground/indie/cutting edge as you def are!
    4: Glistening inks are a trend/fad/hip as we are underground/indie/cutting edge/OG.
    3: You wont SEE a difference in ebonite feeds because you FEEL a difference but you're still brave for saying so!
    2: LOVE LOVE LOVE your point about 5 hrs to write 3 lines, but how else are we supposed to GET good at calligraphy without practice? (lol)
    1: Cartridges/Converters are convenient, but see my q in #8 please.
    0: Pilot converters need work, may God bless Pilot engineers with designing a good converter!
    May God bless you sir for such a funny/enlightening video, keep it up, i know I'll be watching!

      Feedback comments (since you asked)
      10: Pens are nothing without science. I am a lover of both.
      9: Hook safe= fancy screw cap, Magnetic = sciencey snap cap (the only use of magnet I will accept in fountain pens, speaking of the Penbbs whatever-number-it-is-I’m-not-buying-it.
      8: I made it through Graduate school with nothing but a Jinhao 450X and Platinum Plasir. You just carry two at a time, always full. When one runs dry, you just switch to the other, and refill the dry one at home. Planning ahead saves you time, money, and the need for too many demonstrator pens.
      7: Blue is acceptable. Orange, however, is the tuxedo T-shirt of the ink world.
      6: I was hoping someone would notice that.
      5: I’ll take it further. Next time I’ll use a feather.
      4: Are you speaking of hipsters using fountain pens? Since when?
      3: What I SEE is ebonite feeds chugging ink onto the page with great irregularity. I’d rather heatset my face.
      2: Practice is nice, but what’s REALLY great is giving up on something and never having to think about it again! Just ask my guitar.
      1: The answer is more than one cartridge. You buy them in packs.
      0: It almost seems as though the pen designers aren’t allowed to design converters. It’s really odd.

    • @stepheninks

      Makes sense. Depending on the converter, I would agree. Platinum, Sailor, and Kaweco, for example, make converters that are designed to come apart, so they can be cleaned really easily, but most of the other brands I have seen are actually really difficult to fully clean. I’ve heard that using empty cartridges is a really cost-effective way to go!

    1. Flex pens are useless. Get stubs instead.
    2. My most useful pen is a Noodler's Triple Tail. NOT because it flexes, but because it takes the screw-in, screw top reusable 308 cartridge.
    3. Swatching is counterproductive unless you DRAW WITH A Q-TIP. Ink looks different applied by a pen or a q-tip.

    Agree with the Precious Resin opinion. Acrylic is a type of plastic and a valid name to use, but precious resin is just misleading the customer. Glitter inks are one that bugs me too, of course the glitter can cause issues with the feed people. As for the cartridge converter, definitely the most versatile.

  • @chongliu1715
    @chongliu1715 2 роки тому

    Have to agree with most of your points except for wet and dry ink. I think it is referring to the ink flow which depends on the combination flow of the pen, ink and the ink color. So normally in a video if some one says it is a dry ink it normally doesn't help much because it is not solely the ink that causing the feeling of dry. So I got you, but I think using this word to express this feeling makes sense to me.
    Other than that, I couldn't agree more on all other opinions. Cartridge converter is the best filling system yes. It is easy to clean and it does carry enough ink for couple of days for me even for some of the broad nibs. Also I WANT to swap inks often so I don't want my ink to last half year. Shimmer ink is stupid, absolutely yes. I thought it is a good idea but after I try it, NO, it is stupid as hell and now when I buy ink I check if it is shimmer ink because it is a no-go for me if it is. It clog my pens and my pens are too precious to me. I couldn't find a word to express the anger for it. For other points I don't really have a strong opinion but I agree in general. (But my opinion probably doesn't matter anyway lol).

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  2 роки тому

      Yes,, I think the experience of wetness and dryness has a lot to go with pen+ink. But also paper. I would personally put the order of importance as pen>paper>ink. Maybe there’s something to it, but I just don’t see it.
      The dry ink is the one I’m least committed to. I will die on the hill of “Pilot converters suck.” And also that it’s not a good idea to put glitter in your ink… but what do I know? Thanks for your comment!

    Yes, I agree with everything you said. But there are some very dry when it's come to thinner nibs. I had Diamine Earl Grey and it barely didn't flow on my 0.38 nibs but it's work well with Lamy F nib. Some inks they're just prefer to be on wider nibs... I supposed.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, that one was almost completely joking around. I do understand that there are some differences in how certain inks perform, and the term “dry” does make sense for what you’re talking about. I just haven’t experienced a huge difference in any of the inks I own. Also, since I don’t own nearly as many inks as I do pens, I’m basing this opinion on a very narrow sample. All in good fun, of course.

    I hate the look of demonstrators, and I don’t usually buy them for writing, but I’m surprised an artist is the first to openly discuss this because I assumed y’all loved being able to easily see your ink level while going around drawing things. I always assumed y’all were the ones requiring huge ink capacities too. Im in no way offended, but my preconceptions about artists needs are completely blown now 😮

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  2 роки тому

      We’re a diverse lot. I think a lot of artists do like them. Personally, I enjoy my two Twsbi demonstrators, but a pen designer has to try really hard to get my attention with a demo pen. I just like pens that make good lines.

    • @animula6908
      @animula6908 2 роки тому

      @@stepheninkswhat I like about demonstrator pens is how awesome it is when kids can witness the magic of a fountain pen in its entirety. But a kakuno or an eco is perfect for that. When I saw the pilot hundreds of dollars demonstrator pens, i was clearly artists must desire this.
      Here are some other things I go around blaming on artists, because as a writer I don’t see the point of them: really light pastel inks (I tell myself y’all use them like watercolors), ink swatching videos (because unless you are going to paint with ink these tell you very little about what ink will look like when used), and unscented inks (because y’all use more ink than writers do, and only care how it looks, but who else wouldn’t want an ink to smell as good as it looks?). Now you know some weird things at least one non artist things about you on no basis whatever. I hope you did unpopular opinions about ink so I can find the video and check my answers. Been watching your vids for a while now , and I have to say I strongly disagree with some of your opinions , even though I myself had the same feeling when I started out with fountain pens . As far as dry vs wet ink it refers to flow , some inks flow faster than others and therefore a " dry ink that does not flow as fast depisits less ink on the paper , so for thinner or cheaper paper a " dry" ink is less likely to bleed or feather in the same pen than if you used a " wet " ink .
    Also at first I did not care for flex , ebonite feeds or eyedropper pens , however after a while of using them and learning the setup and ins and outs of them I find that once set up properly , and using proper paper you can get a better end product for your art , particularly if you draw comics or manga style art , granted there is a learning curve to get the pen to do what you want it to .

    Every Lamy pen is ugly. Yes, even the 2000.

    My Pilot CH912 with a falcon nib wouldn't write properly. Swapped the plastic feed for an ebonite feed. Works perfectly now. No need to be so absolute. Totes agree about the noodle nibs. They are bought for stupid amounts of money mostly by people who have crap handwriting and not intention of learning.

      Of course, I’m mostly joking around. People like what they like, and don’t like what they don’t right? Diversity of opinions (and hopefully a sense of humor) are what I’m hoping my channel will be able to bring!

    2 minutes in the video and I am already laughing at you... 7th degree science right? Take some science book and learn more about liquids. Not all of them are "wet", it depends on how they interact with the surface is wetting.
    I agree the term is not correctly used in the pen world but you are trying to make fun and your lack of knowledge puts you in a embarrassing position

      Fair enough, but you are supposed to laugh at me? This entire video is meant as a joke, rather than a lesson in fluid dynamics. 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️
      Feel free to laugh at me though. That’s what I’m here for.
