    I don't have a problem with heatsetting the nib as it quite literally takes 30 seconds and it's one of those things that just goes into normal off the shelf cleaning for me. Clean the entire pen thoroughly and then reassemble and heatset because even a pen that's off the shelf perfect might be slightly misaligned when I reassemble it. I'm also a fan of how the resin feels, the nibs in the ones I have received haven't required any work whatsoever, just clean , heatset, fill and off to the races.

    Never touch your nibs to your fingers the oils in your fingers will impeed the flow of the ink I would wash it with some dawn dish soap to get all the oils out and only use napkin or fibercloth to touch the slit of the tines of the nib the only time I ever touch the top of a nib is if its getting ink barnacles the oils from your fingers will keep them from forming :)

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks 2 дні тому

      I don’t have a Vanishing Point myself to test it on, but from what I can understand, and other UA-cam channels have shown (you can easily find a comparison video on here), the pens are identical and the parts are interchangeable. The only difference is that the VP has a gold nib. By that logic, I see no reason why this converter wouldn’t fit on a VP, as it also fits on all of my Pilot pens.

      Work of caution on the Zebra G nib: make sure you clean the pen and feed often, because those nibs are prone to rusting, since they aren’t made to remain in a pen. I had to learn that lesson the hard way.

    Hello Stephen, first congratulations! If you want I can try to fix the colors in Lightroom to match the real work (for free of course). I am a photographer, and assuming consistency across the photos it will be easy for me. Anyway keep in mind that sensors and printers can't reproduce all the colors we can see.

      I appreciate the offer of help. I wouldn’t want to request the employ of someone without compensation, but if you want to look at my designs, I’ll gladly send you a PDF to play with. I do think though, that I really need to get a better printer (someday I hope), so that’s what I think the main culprit is.

    1. Man, did you put yourself through the ringer! But now everything will be easy. Yay! 2. I'm happy just giving my stuff away, to people who seem actually to want it. But now that all my friends have one, I can't find a way to be seen by strangers. 3. People paying cash money for your work is the ultimate confirmation. 4. My cousin screen printed 200 kitchen aprons, not counting bad pulls. She sold them all at a weekend event and then swore never to do it again. Clearly you are doing something righter than she, to enjoy the process. Maybe single color is the way to go? 5. I met a guy in a pastel class who was a political cartoonist for a newspaper (long ago, obvs). He had to produce a cartoon every day. He worked REALLY fast, and clean.

      1. Famous last words. Watch me set up another event and have another freakout of the exact same magnitude. 2. Same for me as well. Also, I’ve made plenty of things that no one wants. Haha. 3. What is that SO true? 4. Single color is fun. Don’t know how to do multiple colors. Maybe I’ll just stop here? Also, low expectations help. I have very low expectations. 6. I admire that. I’ll bet working at that level is the only way you can really get to that level. Like, you’re not making the work as much as the work is making you?

  • @benchandler4298

    Congratulations on making it happen. Deadlines are an interesting thing, I sometimes work to very tight deadlines where I have a meeting at 1pm to discuss work that I haven't drawn yet at 10am. But also they force me to stop reading that great book, or playing that same old video game, and get the work done. Without deadlines, goal setting, taking the plunge and doing that scary new thing we give ourselves permission to stagnate. As your friend says, the pressure is a motivating force, as intimidating as it can be. Sometimes the work will be too much for the time you have, and then you will end up settling for calling work "done" even though it's not up to your usual standards. But there are thousands of artists making comics, animations, games, etc and the deadlines are often what get us to go from "I have this cool idea" to "I accomplished my goal'.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks 4 дні тому

      Yeah, I resonate with all of that. I think that having a UA-cam channel might seem like it comes with a deadline, but I find I can slack off a surprising amount when I’m just not “feeling it.” I feel like the deadline gets on my nerves so much more than forcing myself to be creative when I don’t want to. (even though, in reality, forcing myself to do a thing that I love is one of the weirdest things I have to do to be an artist)

    I felt all that, Stephen, ugh. But you did it! There might be some resources for artists in your area, like nonprofit organizations that promote local artists. Jut read the description and found the ink (PCB). I am glad to be able to see it used with watercolors. Glad you were able to do the events and enjoy them. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good or complete, the audience will tell you what they like and don't like as you described in the video. I also need that time crunch to be able to do my best work and sometimes even when I know it's not my best work it just needs to get done and I can refine it later. Just and idea, I have a friend of mine who has a company that takes his designs and prints them on merch. He designs things that go on t shirts, hats and other various items and the company prints, and ships them piece by piece with no minimum order they also do the fulfillment and shipping. He sells on Etsy. That way you could do merch that we the viewers can purchase. If I get the name of the company I will pass it along. I would love one of the sketchbooks as well if they are available to buy from you.

I definitely feel that if I want to sell things through this channel, I really want it to be viable for international delivery, and I want to ensure high quality. My reputation is so much more important to me than any dollar amount. That’s why I’m an artist with a day job! I definitely wanted to do everything DIY this time because I had built so many designs that, as the artist, I have a sort of complicated relationship with. I have no idea what people are going to like. I could see myself getting professional printing services when I’m sure what designs and products I want to focus on.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks 12 днів тому

      I’ve been thinking about doing that, as I have some G nibs and a pen that fits them from Jinhao. The reason I hesitate is because it would be a somewhat negative review for me. There are some glaring issues with longevity for that pen setup and how that particular nib messes with the flow of ink… which I feel that other reviewers ignore. I always feel like when I make negative reviews it attracts people looking for a fight, and my comment section gets really negative. I love pens, but I don’t like arguing about them. I still might do that video though when I’m feeling brave.

    • @rocknmetalultima
      @rocknmetalultima 12 днів тому

      @stepheninks that are very fair. I've personally been looking for an honest video on the pen because I have been debating getting one. I know the nib would need to be replaced often. But I am curious about the flex, ink flow, and overall build. I do art on top of my bed with a small lap desk. I dont want to use dip pens and open ink and have it spill everywhere. So, I've been hoping to find a review of these pens. But I understand not wanting the negativity it brings. But if you do choose to, if you have the dip pens, I'd like to see a comparison section. Keep up the great work!

    Can you expand on why Moleskine paper is bad for fountain pens? I use a metro with a fine nib (its my first pen) and ive been writing in Moleskine books because thats what im used to. I havent had any problems with it yet but i also dont know any better and dont know much about paper types when it comes to fountain pens.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks 18 днів тому

      It’s not really that it’s bad. They just changed the quality of the paper about 10 or so years ago. Tomoe River and Rhodia are more similar to what they used to be like. Many people in the fountain pen community prefer those brands to what Moleskine puts out now. There’s nothing wrong with what they use now, but it seems overpriced to me for what you get.

Rhodia books are a bit easier to find than Tomoe River in the US where I’m located, but it varies from region to region. I have also given away sketchbooks that I have be made myself on this channel, and I might do that again sometime, so stay tuned! I have a couple fude nibs. I have one of the Sailors and a number 5 and 6 Jinhao fude. The 6 was a loose one I got to try and put on a moonman pen, but it ended up being really dry and scratchy and I couldn't figure out how to tune that sort of nib. The 5 is really nice though, it came on a Jinhao 8802 I believe? It's also a two tone nib, which actually seems to be made out of a thinner material than the full silver colored Jinhao nibs. Because it fits loose in other Jinhao's that came with silver nibs, but fits fine in another Jinhao I have that also came with a two tone nib. My favorite way to use a fude, rather than drawing with it directly, is to fill it with a pastel ink (such as Sailor Manyo Haha) and use it to shade with over a darker water proof ink like platinum carbon black.

    I have 3 of these in fine and extra fine and I do love to sketch with them. I also like the fact that they take standard ink cartridges so its easy to switch colours out. The shape feels good in the hand but I don't like that you have to hold the cap while sketching outside and that they are too long for most pencil cases 😕. I also find the cartidges dry out quickly if the pen is not used for some time so the seal is not good. Overall I only end up using it at home when I want to do a fun sketch or use an unusual colour.

    • @stepheninks

      I find it interesting the wide range of peoples experience with this pen. I think that a commenter on this video is correct in saying that this pen was probably good at one time, and then the quality fell off. I most definitely got my pen after, if that’s the case. The shape is fine, but the quality of the materials are so poor that I feel like I could crush this pen with my bare hands. I’ve held pens that cost 1/10 of what this one cost me, and I didn’t feel that way. I don’t know. Maybe it’s a good thing that they put this model to rest.

    I have both of these platinums too, luckily I bought my 3776 Century UEF nib a few years ago for about £50 and I use it with the carbon ink and have only just had to give it a clean through after all this time and it starts great. Once I realised how expensive the 3776 was now I bought the Preppy to take outdoors with me....but I love my 3776 and I bought it to use it so I filled my preppy with a water soluble grey ink and I take both out with me packed securely in my sketching pouch 😊

  • @eugenborcan

    The nib and feed are setup OK. The issue for the nib being so wet is because the gap between the tines is too large - that will let more ink flow on the page. You can reduce the gap between the tines and that should help with the ink flow... but be careful is easy to mess it up since it is a fude nib - a little bit harder to reduce that gap. The HongDian is more comfortable because of the angle - less steep than the Jinhao. A steeper angle will force you to hold the fountain pen more upright, which is more unnatural for majority of the people.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks 19 днів тому

      Yeah, I suspected the angle was at play here, which is why I compared them. To be fair, the Jinhao nib isn’t unusable, just a tad wet for my taste. I don’t feel super qualified to tighten the tines of nibs. Loosening is way easier. I wonder if that’s why a few of my recent Jinhao acquisitions have been a bit tight, so that it’s easier to hone the nib how you like it? Maybe that giving them too much credit, but honestly, among budget fountain pen brands, I feel like Jinhao doesn’t get enough credit a lot of the time.

    Jinhao also has (or at least had a few years ago) fude nib options on the "shark" 993 model and the "swan" 995. I got a 12 pack of them with fude nibs for $20, and while they're pretty nice for under $2 each... they're nothing amazing. If you don't know the shark/swan pens, they have a tiny hooded nib, and the widest these fudes can get is still less than some stock stubs out there. Quite nice for a quirky fude that's cheaper than some gel pen refills. I can take one to a cafe to doodle with, and if anyone is curious I'll happily give it away (and have a spare cartridge or two with me to throw in for fun). But I'll stick to a Sailor Fude de Mannen, Hongdian, or Moonman for a proper "fountain pen that handles like a paint brush" experience.

    • @TymberJ
      @TymberJ 21 день тому

      Oh and I'll add that I've used larger Jinhao, Majohn/Moonman, and Hongdian fude nibs, and the Jinhao #5 are my least favorite -- Moonman/Majohn pens from a lot of sellers are extra frustrating, because while I quite like the Moonman fude nib (not too wet, and can consistently get lines at widths in between maximum and minimum), a lot of the Moonman/Majohn listings with fude are actually seller swapped in Jinhao nibs that are wet to the point of splotchiness when you get them.

      Yeah, I have a video on the Jinhao Shark on this channel, from way back when I was still filming on my phone. I also found it to be impressive for the price, but the nib needed a lot of work. • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks 21 день тому

      Yeah, mine do work okay, but it is wetter than the others I own, so I prefer them. I’m always on the dry side with both feeds and comments. But I also prefer to just use a regular nib. I swear if I switch to Fude full time, I’ll have arthritis before I turn 50 with all the angles you’ve got to hold it at. You can also get really nice lines with a brush… but it still think I like nibs.
