I have been doing this to help get rid of sentimental items..... surprisingly not once have I ever gone through my photos to look at them yet. It definitely helps in the moment when getting rid of the physical item though!
I have some old stuff from my mother. She's been gone for 36 yrs. It caused me pain and I avoided it. Then I realized, wait...I don't have to do this. I sent the works to a sister who wanted it. She has pleasure, I have release. Yay.
Great video to help change your way of thinking to make it easier to get rid of things that really aren’t needed and as important as you may have though.
Great minimalist rules Gabe. I usually don't like "rules" but they can be great guidelines. One similar thing that has helped me was "If I don't use it in 30 days then I don't need to keep it." Of course that didn't apply to everything, but certainly the small stuff.
Great idea. What I do sometimed when I regularly declutter, I put it in a trash bag and set it aside in a closet. If I don't go back to use any of those items and basically forget I even had them in a month, then I will officially get rid of those items. Most of the time, I never notice those things were gone in the first place.
I know you said for things under 20 but I can see how this thought process could be used for other things as well. I recall buying a house with an extra bedroom “just in case” we had guests and we probably only had two guests the entire time we owned the home🤦🏾♀️.
I think an important thing to remember when decluttering is don't get rid of something, just for the sake of getting rid of it. There is no magic number to minimalism. If you think you may want that shirt, keep it, Just don't do that with everything. No one is coming to inspect your house to make sure you have few enough things. Take the minimalist values and make them fit your life. Especially in our areas of interest, we may want to have more things. If you really love fashion, you may feel it adds value and joy to your life to have more clothes, and don't let minimalism UA-camrs make you feel bad for that.
I'm 15, and I live a somewhat minimalist lifestyle, but my parents don't. So my room has fewer things in it, but the house as a whole does not. I have lots of books and figurines and merchandise that go with the books. I know that while I do not need these things to function, I could get books from the library and not buy the fan merchandise, I want to have these things. They make me happy, so I have them. I do lots of arts and crafts, so I have lots of supplies for that.
I definitely need to do this digitally. I have hundreds of things I've saved over time using the FB save option and I don't think I've EVER gone back to read those things. If it won't hold my attention at the time, it probably won't later either. Thanks for sharing.
I love how you always work on bringing a thoughtful perspective to your videos. Practical advice is great, but if it’s not balanced with a sense of meaning & purpose, it can feel like all the other generic advice out there. Thanks for always delivering advice from a relatable & meaningful perspective Gabe. 😊👍
I can relate to the browser tab thing sooooo much. I keep them to safe time, if I need it again, but to be honest, it costs me more time in the end because I need to go through so many tabs to find the needed one. I really should work on this.
Im having an issue currently, where my daughters will be the same size in clothing as me in a year or two. I fell into a trap buying clothes I though were cute, not realizing they weren’t my particular style. I simply admired them. Like, I would never hang the Mona Lisa in my house. Anyway, I’m holding on to all these clothes, of which I spent hundreds...
Why don’t you let your daughters go through those clothes and decide which ones they like and want to keep? Then you can pass along the rest of them to someone who can use them.
I have the same thing but I choose a day for me it’s Wednesday to watch all of my saved videos. LOL or as many as I can get through. I delete any of them that I have saved for people that I follow because I figure that I can go to their site and find whatever I’m looking for anyway.
I have used this general rule for about five years. I have only had to repurchase maybe 3 things. A crock pot i still Only used once, And white pants and blazer i needed for an “occasion” still Regret all three purchases. Minimize is best
4 years since I was first inspired by minimalism and man has it been a process. I'm still living in a small room with more junk that ideal but each year I get a little better and can let go of a little more and bring less and less into the house. Still struggling with clothes and slow use self care items like body sprays and face serum tubs.
In practice I apply this to lots of small items in the .50 cent to 5 dollar range. It’s not like I’m throwing away $ 20 at a time. The mental clarity I gain by doing this is totally worth it. One thing not really discussed is that often when you have so many items “just in case” it can become overwhelming if your not carful. Eventually one of two things will happen. 1-you will forget you have (or where you stored) an item you need and buy another one 2-the time.(how much are you with per hour) energy and money(such as buying storage boxes) you spend organizing, cleaning and keeping track of things exceeds the value of the item. A recent example is I needed an electrical outlet, so I bought one. A bit later I found one I saved years earlier “just in case” I’m pretty sure I spent a lot of time (probably more than 20 minutes) moving it around to differnt locations while trying to organize things over the years only to forget I had it in the end. It was a lot of mental anguish for a $2 dollar item. It can be wise to save some things but becarefull not to “trip over a quarter while trying to pick up a dime”.
I do nearly the same. Apps get "fired" unless they truly bring enjoyment or productivity. I also keep focus mode on nearly all the time and have many apps disabled through the vast majority of the day.
Thanks for this video, Gabe! Always the highlight of my Monday. Good motivation for the week to come. I’ve been trying to declutter stuff from our move too. :)
Our grandparents lived with the concept of spring cleaning. They did this Not only to clean but so that they could remove things that they really didn’t need and didn’t use from their homes and from their lives. With our busy schedules these days everybody working and rushing from point A to point B we don’t take the time to evaluate what is really important to us. We never “spring clean” our lives. I believe that this lockdown has given us all the opportunity to self evaluate. I hope we stick to it when this is all over with. I think we will find that we have an opportunity for a kinder more thoughtful world if we do. What do you think?
My grandparents have nearly a mansion full of stuff like that. I feel a bit bad for them because I notice they don't really like their stuffed house, but don't really notice they can throw away 90% of their stuff. It's a remnant of the psychology-change that happened after WW2.
I think the best place for minimalists would me Zeitgeist resource economy. There if you need a camera you rent it and when you are done you give it back. But you need people with the right mindset that respect shared commodities. But in Capitalist and Communist systems schoold don't learn how to respect shared items for example and also not all parents do that.
Glad you’re inspired by our 20/20 Rule, our Just for When Rule, and our “what’s the worse thing that could happen” rule. Why not attribute these copyrighted rules to The Minimalists in your video?
I put a link to your channel in the description. I will make sure I mention any inspiration in future. I had originally heard these ideas from a few different people I did not realize they were all yours and copyrighted. I'm a big fan of your work keep it up👍☕
Yep, this sounded like you came up with this idea. I like your channel but it's heavily inspired by others (Matt D'avella , The Minimalists ) . Try to find your own vibe.
One just in case item I got rid of lately are lipsticks. I am not seeing myself using any of them (or even cheek products) for at least the next 1-2years.
Didnt you learn this rule from the minimalists (joshua and ryan) in the first place? If so, shouldnt you have mentioned it? I may have failed to hear you say it, and its good to spread that kind of knowledge, but still a mention would be nice.
I have more of a problem with having some stupid emotional connection to a lot of the stuff. Things the kids had that bring back memories. They don't want the things since they have grown and have their own junk. Why am I keeping it?
Take pictures - sometimes you can make something new of it. My father has a baby blanket made from baby clothes. I have heard of socks sewn to a blanket - same idea. I have a little stuffed animal that belonged to ALL mine. My son had "Connect" Toys we passed to his cousins and then back to Grandkids. Some old toys are valuable - check money pop.
I can so relate to you. When I was a little girl my grandmother used to have afternoon tea waiting for me when I got home from school. When I grew up and had my own children I did the same thing. Now that I am in my 60s and live alone that elaborate tea set seems kind of silly since now when I fix tea for myself it’s a teabag in a cup in the microwave. That tea set held a lot of lovely memories but the memories are in my head. Not in teacups. LOL
Nooo please don't do that. This is so incredibly unsustainable. Guys, if you need things, don't throw them out. If you don't use them, donate, sell or give them to somebody. If you need something you have gotten rid of PLEASE borrow it from somebody else or get it second hand!!!!! Throwing out items, just to replace them is creating a much higher demand for things to be created, thus creating much more waste! Please be aware of your impact, guys!
We absolutely donate or sell everything that we possibly can. The idea isn't just to throw things out so you can get new ones it's if you have stuff that you haven't used in months but you keep thinking you will it's okay to let it go 99% of the time you'll never end up using it
@@GabeBult Hey, thanks your for response and explanation! It does make much more sense to me now. This is a great question to ask when decluttering: "What's the worst thing that could happen?" Thank you for this insightful video!
I have heard of people taking pictures of sentimental items and getting rid of the item. The memory still lives.
I have been doing this to help get rid of sentimental items..... surprisingly not once have I ever gone through my photos to look at them yet. It definitely helps in the moment when getting rid of the physical item though!
The packing/overpacking “just in case” struggle is REAL! I feel seen.

Idk what income level your minimalism channel is aimed, but all I know is $20 can added up over time.
