At the new place I can't just light a stinking coal fire in the backyard like I used to, so I had to find a cleaner and more controlled way of melting aluminium. I thought about building an electric furnace, but that seemed to be too much work and too prone to failure because of breking coils and comes with a number of other problems. So I decided to make a propane furnace and keep it as simple as possible. As an outer shell I used a steel barrel. As a mold for the inner chamber I used the container of an old herbicide sprayer, because I couldn't find a bucket of the right size and didn't want to buy one. The substance of the furnace was made from a mixture of fire cement and perlite dry fill insulation. The perlite will insulate the furnace, hence making it more efficient, and the fire cement will glue the perlite particles together to form a solid mass. This also makes this furnace remarkably lightweight.
Hey there, nice design you came up with. I'm a blacksmith, this is a much better way to make Damascus steel billets. ThankQ for sharing. From Pensacola, Florida 🇺🇸
Very cool crucible system to pour the aluminum! nice!
Wieder mal ein sehr, sehr qualitativ hochwertiges und unterhaltendes Video, Cosmas :D
There appears to be pro's and con's to your square crucible. You intentionally made the furnace so that the flame would swirl, but then the square crucible prevents the swirling. However your system of pulling out the crucible looks good and the crucible has it's own pouring spout! Overall it works so kudos to you !
Squares don't prevent swirling.
In this furnace you can melt cast iron? or just aluminum? or for cast iron I have to use propane, because the coal does not release enough heat? Thanks and greetings for yours success. :))
I hope you are using fire cement. Regular cement can sometimes explode when exposed to fire.
Guess you didn’t make it 9 seconds into the video.
T
Wow, this is fantastic. I have been looking at purchasing a furnace but then thought I should be able to build one for much less and this was the first thing I saw. I could probably find most of these materials for free at the dump if I keep an eye out. Thank you for sharing this.
wait, what did you cast?
Finally someone smart enough to make a wider pouring hole instead of a narrow one, resulting on a messy spill all over the sand... My respects.
The square crucible helps greatly to pour without spillage. Standard crucibles are hard to pour with.
You should use a cylindrical crucible, the squareness prevents the fire from spinning around the crucible.
But great project and awesome video!
Yes you're right!
How profitable is smelting aluminium? A how do u sale it?. I did a great job
Actually, the squareness adds turbulence and slows the flames slightly, resulting in faster heat transfer to the crucible. And the surface area of a square crucible is greater than a cylinder, again adding more surface exposed to the heat. Crucible placement and orientation to the flame front may be a possible place for experimenting. Try not to be so negative, it seems to work very well, the pour spout is less constructive than a standard crucible, it poured quickly, and easily! All thumbs up!
Landlord: "Hi Cosmas, I watched your video yesterday".
Cosmas: "That's great, did you like it?"
Landlord: "Yes, but you burnt the grass $#@&!! ".
Cosmas: "It's OK, they were just weeds!"
rly nice! I need to build my own too! :) Now using charcoal which is messy.
Hmmm i wonder how big i would need to make a furnace to melt down 10 kilo of steel
Probably like a 55 Gal barrel
remember kids: always wear crocs while playing with molten metal!
LMAO, funny
SatanicSlave love my crocks have you seen the safety version of them
might be leather ones?
Nice simple idea, I enjoyed your video. Very practical.
what did you cast?
My question EXACTLY!
Hochwertiges Video, ich will ein neue Rocket Stove machen, jetzt habe ich eine bessere Idee fur eine Bauweise. Vielen Dank aus Schottland!
Cheer~~an enclosed structure in which material can be heated to very high temperatures, e.g. for smelting metals.😊
Looks good! Thanks! I am thinking of making something similar. I'll post my video soon!
What type of metal was the container of the melted metal made of so the container didn't melt only the content?
This is cool! But, tell us how Perlite and fire cement is mixed
Think this would work as a mini incinerator....have a dog kennel and 4 large mastiffs dog waste is a issue the garbage man complains about bags bursting when they compress it in the trucks.
*BRO JUST USE 8 COBBLESTONE*
is this true i was told to put fire bricks back over furnaces hole this will help keep it from cracking
The melting point of copper is 1984 degrees F can it reach that tempature with propane?
The melting point of copper is 1984 degrees F can it reach that tempature with propane?
could've used coke, it doesn't smell and barely produces any smoke.
Great video, I wanted to know what type of crucible you are using and where you purchased it? Thanks!
@Adam it appears to be a box tube with a welded in bottom, an old 50 lb welding rod can would work for a short term.
what is the ration of furnace cement to perlite?
Great project Cosmas! Can you share the type of sand you use on your molds? Where can I buy it from in Europe?
I was planning to make a furnace like this. Can i use a LPG alternative for propane? Then add a blower for airsupply to increase oxygen level which increase temperature?
LPG vs propane = they are the same thing.
very cheap and cool
Looks like a great project and it even had a trolley setup
Are you worried about the perlite exploding?
can useing cement to making a metal melting furnace
That crucible is super, simple cheap and full proof, great design.
I think I will do mine that way.
Crucible is super cheap if you have a welder or friend with one. That's the part that holds the molten metal itself.
Will this smelt copper?
What did you useful the cement? The universal super stuff. I could see no manufacturer name. Details, details, details. This actually worked, so it would be great to have the ability to replicate it. Without the details, comparable materials cannot be found. Thanks!
There is a concrete releasing agent they use to help the concrete release from the tube, after the concrete dries.
Yes, there are many.
We used to use washing up liquid on site but I'm not sure it would work with the heat
What steel is that square thing sir.
Your wife or mother is going to kill you when she finds out what you did to her grass!😂
why is it the insulate wall collapse in some areas? could i fill in this area when you burned test at low temperature? can i use the powder pyrite in place the bead shape mixed in with the high-temperature cement? how high the temperature this furnace reached? it was informative to see this.
where do u come from?
Hi
What did you use to make the furnace ??
He used 8 cobblestone
♥.♥
Thanx... But i prefer to buy an induction furnace.
Wow ingeneous thanks
Thank You - Enjoyed your video. Great idea adding the perlite to the cement for lightweight and effective insulation.
Nice, but, you could've at least showed how the cast3d metal looked like
Makes me want to cast something... Very ingenious to use the herbicide sprayer as a mould!
FinnCrafted b
"very" ingenious?...🤔...that might be an exaggeration....
Propane and propane accessories
grate show joly old chap i am going to try same thing just with an old hot water system
Can you provide exact product name or link to the product?
Very nice work sir
Hi can you tell the names of the two bags that you used
I like youre video, thank yiu for sharing youre expirience. Can you tel me how did you connect burner hose with propane bottle? Did you use any safety valve or did you connected hose directly to the propane bottle valve?
plz how much time you need to melt the aluminium with this furnace ?
Well done.
Hi what mix did you do in percentages
What is that torch device called? I need to buy one.
its a weed burner, each hardware store seems to have its own model of weed burner, but they are all pretty much the same.
I've made one like kor (rip) and I've used a weed burner but the tin can doesn't get hot enough before my gas freezes up? What have I done wrong??
what's in the right bag? Can you link a page where you can buy it?
Deine Arbeitsschutzschuhe sehen aus wie meine ;-)
i always thought that molten metal interacting with the tiniest bit of moisture from the ground would make it pop. was it so little metal that it cooled quickly?
You were wrong. That sounds like something out of an action movie.
@@CosmasBauer ah cool. just something I read. Higher metal to water makes boom, like if it splashed onto concrete a day after a rain. I know about splash casting being safe because it can cool quickly though.
Wieviel Gas brauchst du für einen Tiegel? Bei meinem Versuch ist die Flasche angefroren und das Gas wollte nicht mehr herauskommen, dadurch war der Brenner nur noch "lauwarm"
So for bigger a 55 gallon metal drum, and 30 gallon plastic drum insert, concept seems the same, might need 2 burners tho. Thoughts sir?
Might need three burners.
“That’s a clean burning furnace I tell ya ‘hwat”
Quite the shoes for handling molten metal. No judge though, i wear them in my shop too
Does anyone have any design ideas for open furnace?
Would this be good for smoking meats?
I like that pull cart, where did you get it?
What a cliff hanger ending :D thanks for sharing!
So the big question is, what is your heat source? Building a furnace means shit if we don't know how to fire it. How are you firing this up?
It's a propane weed burner. You can pick them up at most hardware stores.
Good job, great idea for the crucible for pouring.
mines simpler. just use 8 cobblestone.
What Are Your Ratio Portion Of The Cement And Perlite? Do You Speak English?
اطتلا عات عمو می رسد
I feel like you skipped a step or two!
What happened to the plastic caulk tube? Didnt like 800 degrees?
I removed it before.
What’s the maximum temperature this gets?
can we use methane gas or natural gas dude?
Also will it melt iron with that setup?
What ratio did you do the mix
Is it only the Gaz we know you use?
Propane Weed Burner from Harbor Freight. Does it get hot enough to melt silver?
the burner itself often isn't the biggest factor to how hot the foundry gets, its actually the insulation. The better insulated the more heat goes from the burner to the crucible. Propane can actually melt steel, but you've got to have the right conditions. A forced air burner will get hotter and burn more reliably than a atmospheric burner like weed burners are.
2 small or contour 2 big
What did you cast?
Great idea to handle the crucible !!
How did uou make your crucible?????
I welded up a couple of pieces of steel.
@@CosmasBauer i need to get my own welder.....my boss taught me to use his havent had much need to use it on my own.......maby its time
Cool
sieht wie meine Esse aus
selber Brenner 😃
سلام از چه موادی برای عایق استفاده کردی ؟
how long did it take to melt it.
Good video nut no mix ratios.
What kind of cement is it and where can you buy it? I love the design and that was an awesome idea to use the weed spray container I wanna make the same thing as you but with a lid
So what did you Make?
주둥이까지마.
I like your setup.
In which thing u melt the metal
will this melt iron? can it reach 1000 degrees?
I doubt it with that burner
How well has that furnace worn?
Love it and you know how to talk thanks mate
