  • I am answering a question from Cathy about a rose she inherited in her garden. She doesn't know what rose it is, Is it a climber or a shrub? Cathy is wondering how to tell for sure. I am going deep into the confusing process of rose classification and why it is often up to the gardener how to grow roses in the garden. Happy Gardening!

Her rose could also be a rambler, especially if the canes are more pliable and the flowers are smaller and clustering. Just another thought. I love all types of roses!

Agree, I am pinning your comment to the top, for Cathy to see.

Yes we are having a lot of rain here too but the plants look so happy and fresh. And a rose I had give up for dead has suddenly sent 2 tiny green sprouts up! I am glad I took your advice and waited before digging it up!

Great! Those plants have their hidden lives, you know. Glad that your rose decided to live!

@@OlgaCarmody I am curious what you think about wrapping roses in the winter? I know we are many months away but this last winter was very difficult in RI and so many roses were damaged. I usually just mulch around them to keep the roots safe but after last year I am wondering if the canes need more protection. I have seen some shrubs wrapped in burlap but not sure if that is appropriate for roses.

Olga I enjoy all of your videos 💗 ☺️ You are teaching me so much about roses! I’m from New Orleans and I’ve started collecting David Austin roses just this year 🌹 They have definitely stolen my heart 💗 Like you have said they will do 😂 Keep the videos coming! 🪴☀️

Thank you! Yes, our hearts are stolen, for good, all those roses to try and buy! It is not fair that space and money is not there to afford them all!

So interesting, Olga! I thought David Austin's shrubs and roses were bred differently! Good to know about all roses, actually. I will watch my roses and see what they want to be. Thank you!!!

Yes, some roses can be both, and some will never be climbers or shrubs.
