Your country and people deserves all the praises.

It’s nice to see so much human interaction in the process, it makes the product much more appealing. Something made by human beings for human beings.
its amusing how i would have called it typical asian sweatshop shithole if it wasn't in japan.
We have so much automation, humans shouldn’t have to do this work to make a living (unless they want to).

I love how much of this was done by hand and that they reused the broken pieces to limit waste. Also, that is the pinkest chalk I have ever seen. One more thing, I have never used chalk that strong. The way they were handling it would have definitely broken all of the chalk I have ever used.

I am exceptionally shocked at how much of that was done by hand.
I was going to say the same thing. Way more labor intensive than I would have guessed. But, I imagine these old ways won't be around for too much longer because of new technology both in how the chalk is made (to remain cost efficient and competitive in today's world) and in how chalk is used in schools: So many schools have gone to digital methods of displaying information to students.
Cray
@@snaplash You didn't see the rest cose it is done in anather factory.
This one particular factory is possible in Japan only. Yes it is done whole process in one place only.
Modern production process is spread on many stages in many different places. Cose you can use same production equipment in other purposes, not for chalk making only.
You just can't build the factory for only chalk making exclusively, it is economical madness.
Terribly inefficient process, the chalk paste should be driven out from the mixing machine via screw rollers straight into the extruder.

As someone who was forced to clean the class blackboard 50+ years ago, the wonderful smooth opaque quality of that chalk in the last scene really got to me 9:47 Ours used to skid across the board, squeak and scrape, and put out a scratchy translucent line you could see the blackboard through.

Very interesting video, showing the entire process from start to finish.
I'm impressed that even the packaging is done by hand.

The Japanese always make the simplest things seem so much greater than the sum of its parts by treating the process of a product's creation with respect and honour.

There's something incredibly satisfying about the sound of writing on a chalkboard that nothing else can really capture.
I love that’s it’s made mostly by hand. Also the older people have, in my opinion, the most skilled and experienced jobs, the way it should be.
I love that they use chalk to make notes on the mixer.
I always assumed that all chalk was calcium-carbonate. I learned that gypsum is also used here. I figured they would add dye to the calcium-carbonate, but it appears that coloured chalk is different.
Funny thing is that I always thought chalk was made only of gypsum! 😄 I suppose Japan, as an island nation, has an abundance of calcium carbonate sources. Where I live--inland--there is a great amount of gypsum.
LOL. I thought chalk was mined, There is after all natural chalk.
@@phil6506 Well, you're correct. The raw materials--whether gypsum or calcium carbonate--are indeed mined.
@@nashvillain171 Gypsum is the 'chalk' you find in walls, but calcium carbonate is the natural chalk you find in nature. It has a silkier feel when used, while gypsum has a sharper, squeekier feel. Ideally, the best chalk would be a mix of the two, to balance softness and hardness.
@@Bubu567 Both are natural materials and are mined.
this is a good video that should be shared in schools for students to learn how chalk came about.

Every Maths professor gets wet seeing this process. "Oh, yes!! That's the good stuff."
For those who don't know, japanese chalk is (rightfully) considered the holy grail; just try to trace one line with one of those bad boys and you'll immediately know why they are considered legendary (that is, if you can get your hands on one 😄)
Even when your well-connected colleague has a box for sale, you won't mind paying the eye-gougingly price he asks, and you'll probably do so with a big smile on your face!
I remember watching a video about the love math professors have for a specific chalk and some bought enough to last many many years when a company was going out of business

no wonder it's so yummy, 8 different pastes of CaCO3? Say no more
I’d buy ANYTHING made in Japan - they’re fabricated meticulously and with love ♥️
Back in the 50, 60, 70's, Japanese stuff was considered junk. Now, it's high quality.
@@deecook8393 Even at the beginning of the 80's ! A friend of mine's father owned a Japanese car ( a Mazda, I think) which was not much more than a toy-car in its global design, and when the dear father had to turn right or left, the bottom of the car noisily scratched the road, each time. Yet suddenly, I would say around 1983 or 1984 the "Made in Japan" began to mean something else than "cheap and fun" ! Fabulous !
Same, they actually take time with their products.
japan in fact does make plenty of crap products

I live in the USA and I have always been surprised at how many people do not realize how much we all need each other. The world can learn so much if people would just open their minds and hearts to others. The workmanship is off the charts as it is in many other Countries as well.
Chalk and greenboard.. Back in school days we use water and squeegee to wipe them off the board, and whoever on class duty that day will have their lower uniform littered with white spots, some kids would swing the squeegee just to mess with the other, but thinking back we just create additional task since we clean our own classroom every single day
The best in the world.
The reason a lot of schools switched to Expo markers and whiteboards was because of fear that the chalk dust would be damaging to computers.
I still prefer chalk but its rarer and rarer to find.
At my university, only the math building kept blackboards. Presumably because of the math professors preferring chalk.
Also a nightmare for kids allergic to it. Was happy as hell when digital boards came to my school.
I’ve studied at three universities so far and in every math department there is a legend about chalks imported from Japan. There is a particular brand that went out of business, I recognize it by the box but not by it’s name. Legend says that you cannot write a false theorem with it. (It is beautiful, exquisite chalk, writes very smoothly and almost never breaks.)
Hagoromo is the same I believe

I'll buy a box with every color, specially that hot pink.
Great video 🙌🏼
I wonder if there's a noticeable texture difference between the Calcium Carbonate and the Gypsum, other than just color? It seems like it would be neat to test! Thanks for sharing! This was awesome
Carbonate chalk tends to be more durable, less dusty, but skips, produces skinnierer and less contrasted lines than calcium sulphate chalk, or gypsum chalk. Sulphate chalk, being less durable and dustier, produces excellent broad and well contrasting lines. But you will burn through miles of it on a blackboard.
The holy grail was the Hagoromo Fulltouch Chalk, which had the properties of sulphate chalk, with an added wax layer to keep the dust down, with a carbonate formulation producing durable and long lasting chalk. But they stopped production in 2015 and has recently been sighted at over $800 a box. A korean company bought up their equipment but apparently its just not the same.
You can just ask an artist.
Unique stuff
I am glad they recycle and use the chalk that was deem imperfect.
Huh..gypsum mixture so much thinner than calcium carbonate but hardens in only 5 min, interesting stuff!
The calcium carbonate must be much better quality for it to be worth all that excruciating time and effort. That single five minutes for gypsum makes more than probably 3 hours of the other process
Try to add NaCl
