The scale of identity politics on both sides of the political spectrum in the US is quite shocking, imagine deciding your vote based on an immutable characteristic of nature, rather than the actual policies that person supports, or the quality of their character?!

The house divided actually works better than the central force of will, that's why democracy is the best (and worst) at governance. Fascism and authoritarianism is seductive for a reason: it makes sense on the surface, but turns into a monster in application.

However, if the US really had a media that holds truth to power (rather than being a propaganda tool for billionaires) the headlines would have been addressing all the lies Trump told, and that would have been the story for weeks. Let's face it, if the media actually told the truth, people like Trump or the Tories would never see power, ever.

She's the candidate who performed absolutely appallingly in the Democratic primaries the last time around, finishing essentially last and having to drop out in the early stages. Her own party members didn't think that she was competent to be President, but the Clintons liked her (they share politics) so she was chosen as Biden's running mate to mollify that faction of the party, whilst also attempting to appeal to black voters (she didn't, because she has a questionable record as a prosecutor, but they voted Democrat anyway, as has traditionally been the case). Centrist political wonks and Democratic voters who put party ahead of politics like her because she will tow the party line on anything, even in rare cases where she has previously expressed principles to the opposite. She probably can't beat Trump in an election, but she will most likely be chosen as the candidate anyway because the (Clinton-era) party apparatus will do everything that they can to rig the selection process, as they did in 2016 (à la the whole Wasserman-Schultz DNC emails fiasco, and subsequent court case). She's a bad choice, but DNC-aligned media are going to spin it as though she is the most gifted, talented, and perfect candidate for the job. In the unlikely event that sanity prevails and a decent candidate is chosen instead, she would again be a logical choice for VP. She's not incompetent, but she lacks the moral scruples and necessary vision to be an effective leader. (There's a reason Obama didn't endorse her.)

    As an American, three predictions:
    (1) Kamala Harris will prove remarkably incapable of scoring points off Trump, on any issue. She'll say the right things on paper, but for a myriad of reasons it will simply not work
    (2) her answers to timeline questions about Biden's health (i.e. when did you know, and why didn't you speak out?) will evolve into traps she lays for herself. She'll give an answer, then amend her statement. Then an email will come out that casts doubt on that amendment, and she'll feel compelled to amend again, and on it goes until she becomes the internet's most watched meme, all because she cannot cop to a very human mistake - doing a bad thing out of loyalty to a good guy. If Democrats are serious, they won't pick a person who aided and abetted Biden's attempt to hang onto a job he was no longer qualified to do (especially when that person was the only one in the administration who had a Constitutional duty to act)
    (3) she'll win less than 15 states

These are multimillionaires who contribute millions. Pelosi and Schumer gathered forces and told Joe that he was going to get out, not asking by the way. Friends of a lifetime, threw him under the bus, and he was angry about how he was treated. You’d think after forty years in a cut throat business he’d know the axe was coming. I don’t know how Rory has come to his conclusions about Kamala, but the polls show her ahead/neck-and-neck with other potentials. As for carrying a state, that’s what you pick a VP for. You don’t elect a presidential candidate to win a state; that’s too narrow a scope.

I just don’t see why Rory’s objection that Kamalas lack of expertise on trade, foreign policy etc. would matter. Clearly Trumps past success has shown that subject matter expertise is completely irrelevant to electability, and the president can’t be an expert in everything in any case, that’s why they have cabinets.

Great content as always. Just nitpicking here but it’s important: it’s the “Democrat” party, not the “democratic” party. Also Kamala is half-Indian. Her first name is Indian just to remind everyone of it. I wonder what makes her “black” more than she’s “Indian” or even “Asian” from a marketing and PR perspective.

Great question - and I suspect no liberal will take that on. If Kamala is honest she would quit the "I'm an African American schtick" supplemented by African American references and language. America needs to STOP characterizing every issue through a race lens.

I find it so strange the way they talk about race and gender. I am gay myself and I certainly wouldn't vote for a gay person just because they were gay. I would listen to their ideas and politics.
In fact, if they said I should vote for them because they were gay, it would completely put me off and I would make sure I wouldn't vote for them

But with respect, you aren't the demographic they are trying to attract. Nothing to do with your sexuality, but rather you are a thoughtful, considerate voter. You weigh the pros and cons of a candidate based on rationale and their policies.
This is, in many respects, about herding a certain level of sheep. Or certainly, attracting a voting demographic who the other person will deliberately alienate.

I don’t think it’s about that, I think it’s as much about the opposite. Would you vote for somebody whose language and actions suggested they are anti-gay people? Or someone who it is known doesn’t have bigotry in that regard.

    • @herefordguy

@@jamesgrant3343 someone doesn’t have to be gay to not be anti-gay though do they? Thats a ridiculous comment.
Thats like suggesting a white man standing for election must be anti black purely because they are white.
What you said leads exactly to the problem I am commenting on
