I'm guessing you are mature of age and remember the days when cars were judged for quality by how tight the body panels fit together, the slim seams and the bulk of the passenger doors and the heavy sounding thunk as you closed them. This was how automobiles were judged back when this badass Merc was new. The idle of the 429/460 engine, its 4 throat carburetor sifting gasoline without a care, ready to haul this 4,200 lbs. ride from 0-60 in 7 seconds. This was a good car, not a Falcon or a Pinto, or God forbid, a fucking Corvair. You were far safer in a fat metal sedan than some goofy Volvo. That is what we all thought. We would be corrected as the century turned 2000. Today we have plastic minivan cars that can get you to 60 mph in 2seconds flat and chastise you for opening a window with the climate control on. Modern cars are longer so much mechanical as they are a giant interconnected computer. You won't find a cigarette lighter but you will find a USB port for every seat. You push the button to start but it takes a second or two for the onboard computer systems to interface before engine fires up. They make lousy getaway cars
Shit - they don't make em like they used to

@@tracy4good NASCAR has helped automakers understand that a fat metal sedan” is not always safer. Safer when you hit pedestrians and other vehicles. More dangerous when you hit fixed objects such as a telegraph pole or a concrete abutment. NASCAR has helped automakers understand that cars are much safer when the energy is dispersed. Today’s car falls apart and has crumple zones.

That's a beautiful car, with the dark blue paint and the white vinyl top. The 390 was a great engine, too. It didn't have the same get up and go as the 429, but it definitely provided plenty of power to propel some of these big late 60s Fords like LTDs, Marquises, and T-Birds down the road.

The 390 provided good power to many full size Fords and Mercurys. It was similar in bore and stroke to the Pontiac 389/400 which was its main competitor. Both of them had difficulty passing a gas station but gas was inexpensive then.

My guess would be that your car was owned by someone that was not mechanically inclined, so had the "brother-in-law" keep it running for him. It was obviously loved. Great tip about finding vacuum leak. It seems like nothing terrible was done mechanically, and all things you will reverse and improve Adam. This is my favorite car in your fleet! Regarding the fuel filter. I also wrap a bit of teflon tape first. Then when I snug it up, it is fine, no leak. I noticed the owner before me did that too, and I have lots of threads left when screwing in the filter.

But we waited until we were in New York a few years later and we got the 1973 Colony Park with the 429. It was medium green with the wood paneling. I had a 1969 Mercury Marquis. It looked like a Lincoln class car. To meet emission requirements they used lean carburation. This in combination with a high-compression engine resulted in knocking. There were vacuum hoses running all over the place in the engine compartment. The windshield wipers were electric driven but the wiper speed was vacuum controlled.

It's amazing the difference working on a classic vehicle like this Merc versus a modern car. We just had our late model Ford Escape in for service due to a check engine light. It turned out to be a computer module failure that must be addressed by the dealer. The Ford dealership is so backed up that we can't get our Escape seen until July 20th. I hope our Escape doesn't need any new chips or we may be waiting a long time to get the engine up and running again. So there is something to be said for being able to work on your engine in the driveway with a basic set of tools.

    • @will7its
      @will7its 2 роки тому

These guys always say "It needs a new module" 90 % of the time its a ground or the connector needs to be wiggled a few times. Another big problem with new cars is if the battery isnt fully charged. Cars sit and voltage goes low. Fords are notorious for this. Charge the battery. It fixes a lot of things......

That car reminds me of the green 67 Marquis my dad had. His had the 410 in it. I always thought these looked like baby Continental . Those cars are made like tanks. My dad used to talk about how heavy that car was and how he had to stop his lift at work 3 times for the air compressor to build up enough pressure to push it up in the air. He said his 64 Bonneville would go straight up. Not that Marquis. It was a heavy beast.

I can remember, being in junior high then, how ugly we kids thought those new federally-mandated side marker lights were! Always was amazed at how beautifully Mercury had adapted the '66 dashboard, while the beautiful '66 Ford dash went really homely.

The only issue is you will need to manually kickdown . The only Ford Quadrajet is the 429 CJ. It has the kickdown. I think Edelbrock offered a Quadrajet with Ford kickdown.

Adam warned about cheap hose clamps on the fuel line near the carburetor. Another interesting UA-cam author had an engine fire on his vehicle due to a rubber fuel line failure in his engine compartment. So I would suggest cheap insurance on older beloved vehicles would be quality fuel lines with alcohol resistance.

Nice job, sometimes hack mechanics are the very reason I picked up an outstanding deal.
Wasn't this the model (2 dr hardtop)
McGarrett drove in the pilot episode?

Sure was, it was a rental car.

In the Pilot, McGarrett drove a black '67 Marquis 2 dr. But it was pointed out that cop cars have to be 4 doors, so in the first (and several more) seasons later, he has a black '68 Park Lane 4 dr. Later in '74, McGarrett gets an updated black '74 Marquis 4 dr. (Like one Adam has.)

@@rwg520 Both James MacArthur, and the gentleman that owns the real documented '68 said the 2dr was a rental car. They weren't sure the show would be "picked up".
Sorry, that's all I have to go on.

I bought a Maverick really cheap one time because it wouldn't run; the points rubbing block was just wore down. Reset the points and drove it to Florida and back.
