  • A perfect #wednESday with Mr. 335 Larry Carlton. Larry came in with his cousin Steve and our good friend Jim Hodson. Larry is currently living in Nashville, and he's in LA visiting friends and family. We honored to have Larry come into #NormansRareGuitars to talk a little bit about his career, play a little bit for us, and shoot the sh"t! Larry is playing a 1962 Gibson ES-335 with a stop tail piece and PAFs, what do you guys think?

    To think that we almost lost Larry in 1988 to a crazed gunman outside of his home studio, "Room 335". Thank God he survived and is still playing beautifully over 30 years after that awful day. Larry, we still love you; thanks for sharing your great talent and soul. The world is a much better place with you in it!

    As far as price on Carlton's 1969 335, $850 in 69 translates to $6,237 today. Sweetwater sells them new for $3,300 to $4,000 today. Looking at the past, the older you get, the better it was. I know. I'm 72, and it's true!

      I too have noticed, Rick Beato did an interview with Mr. Carlton, you can watch it for yourself. We all get old (myself included), hands don't work the same way they did decades ago.
      It's been said "Getting old is painful and expensive, but still better than the alternative".
      I can't say enough good things about Mr. Carlton that haven't already been spoken/written, he truly is a gift to us all.
      Myself, I consider Larry Carlton the Guitar Players Guitarist.
      May we be Blessed with his music and inspiration for many, many years to come.

    I was introduced to Mr. Larry Carlton in 1969 by a band mate of mine named Jamie Shane, who was a next door neighbor and a close friend of Mr. Carlton in Newport Beach, CA. Jamie Shane told me that Mr. Carlton was selling a motorcycle, a Honda Scrambler, and I bought it from him. I rode it home to Hollywood where I used to live, and I almost killed myself because I barely knew how to ride a motorcycle, what an adventure when I got on the freeway! A couple of years later The Crusaders double album came out with Mr. Carlton playing in it, I was blown away! Then “Lighting Strikes” came out and I was mesmerized by his solo on “Mulberry Street.” I still have both albums. Backtrack: the day that I went to Mr. Carlton’s house, he was jamming with a couple of friends, one of them was his longtime keyboardist sorry to say that I forgot his name, but they were smoking hot! Playing jazz, blues, etc. To this day Larry Carlton is one of my top five favorite guitar players ever, and indeed, not only is he a phenomenal musician, but also an outstanding human being.

    • @geetarnut
      @geetarnut 7 років тому +9

      What it is, is, Larry always deflates his own ego,, as others build it up! That's the sign of a humble man! It's funny though,, when I first heard Larry play on the radio in 1980 or so, playing "MIDNIGHT PARADE",,, off of his "STRIKES TWICE" album, I was knocked out! I had never heard guitar playing quite like that before! And the very next day I went and bought that album, and IMMEDIATELY got to work on learning his technique(s). When ever I would listen to Larry play, I would get goose bumps! No other guitarist did that to me! And years later, when I jam with my local musician pals on both the blues jam night, and the jazz jam night,,, almost always the audience and even the musicians look at me very intently, and at times it bothers me, which I'm sure is what Larry feels as well, because of his humility. And people always tell me things like, "wow, you have such emotion in your playing",, or, "hey, you gave me the shivers",,,,,,,, to which I always reply, with MUCH gratitude,, "Thanks to Larry Carlton"!!!! And always try to get them to start listening to Larry's music! Larry Carlton may be the best overall guitarist of all time!!!!

I bought my first 45s there for 99 cents, and I remember renting a trumpet there for my elementary school music class. Remember when schools had a music class? I've always wanted to own a Gibson ES-335 since 1972. I just couldn't afford it. But my first Brand name guitar was a 1972 Fender Telecaster . I wish I still had it!
    I have an Epiphone Casino (2003) that I love but, its not the 335. This past Sunday, my buddy hit the Super Bowl Pool on his job. He won $30,000! Maybe I'll borrow
    some of that for a nice 335! With this guitar, you can play all styles of music! 🎸

    Fun interview, yes...but WHOA that is one gorgeous guitar! The cherry red finish on that '62 has the most luxurious warm silky satin glow, I guess that's what beautifully maintained nitro looks like 55+ years.

    I was happy to see Larry Carlton play alongside Jon Herington in Vegas. Larry came on for Kid Charlemagne and did a wonderful job on the few songs. Black Cow and Kid Charlemagne. The next day I was lucky enough to get a guitar lesson from Jon Herington!!

    One of the biggest regrets of my life involved Larry Carlton, it was a Gibson event and Larry was the featured artist that day. Before the show you were let into a room to try the latest product. I'm not a real jazzier I'm more of a, all arounder type. So I was pretending I knew how to play some jazz when Mr. Carlton came over and started talking to me. He couldn't have been a nicer guy. He seem to have zero ego. I was telling him I was an avid reader of Tom Tedesco column in Guitar Player magazine and he shared many Tedesco stories with me. Just as he was leaving he said, " you know, I hate doing these things by myself would you want to come up and do a few with me?" My immediate response was, "Oh no,no,no!" In an almost cartoonish voice. He genuine looked hurt! I don't know why I chickened out, he was such a class act I'm sure he would have saved me from looking too bad. I think about that every time I hear his name. Lol

    Larry Carlton & Robben Ford is why I bought myself a ES335. Although I will never ever be a skilled guitarplayer like Larry Carlton, Robben Ford, Joe Bonamassa, Josh Smith or Kirk Fletcher... I enjoy picking up a guitar and play. And I enjoy listening to the guys that can play!

    Jeezus! Larry Carlton playing live with the Dan! Doesn't get any better than that. The bootleggers better be out in force for those gigs!
