The AIDS episode was inspired from the real-life story of Ryan White, who had been expelled and received death threats. White had contracted the disease via blood transfusion, back when it was still seen as something that only affected gay people. Many people, including celebrities, rallied around him. one of those was Elizabeth Taylor, who actually voiced the mother of the boy in the episode.
RIP Elizabeth Taylor.

That's a really interesting bit of trivia that's anything but trivial. I didn't know that episode was based on someone's real experience. Thank you for taking the time to share this and I hope that you're doing well in all things. :)
I remember when it became obvious that AIDs could be spread via heterosexual sex there were still those, some highly educated, who continued to label AIDS as a "gay disease".😠😠😠
Its because anal sex has high risk of AIDS but its also just being with too many partners aswell with unprotected sex. But i heard this was more an epidemic in the 1980s when lot of people had misconceptions on AIDS or how it worked
"Fuck people!" I love that guy, I've only seen him in two episodes but he's hilarious
Heart ring was simple. It gives the user not only psychic abilities yet allows him to communicate with wildlife (similar to Aquaman)
yet we all know how Aquaman is
That could actually be the most powerful and destructive ring. he could tell a cobra to go into an enemies home and bite them when they're asleep
I think kratos and ashura would love that power
Heart is essential mind control and I find that disturbing. Serious why have a Ring that can basically brainwash people and invade their bodies yet plants and plant life is completely ignored which is a major concern as literally all life depends on the survival and protection of plants.
So he fucking suck
They seriously said the words "UNPROTECTED SEX" on Captain Planet... how did that make it into the final cut?!
It was a kids show that taught serious topics.
@@YuukiTakemoto1996 one from the early nineties at that
I see nothing wrong with it, it's meant to be educational and Unprotected Sex is a cause for it. Sure, the target audience is being told a string of words they don't understand yet, but might as well have the early knowledge come from this harmless tv show over finding out in other worse methods.
I'm glad this show had the guts to tackle these things even if it made a fool of itself
Suddenly makes me ask is spawn the animated series be a kids film

They should do a gritty reboot of Captain Planet.
You know how the environmental crowd and the overpopulation crowd tend to overlap and then there are those people that think that humans are the worst thing ever?

like the Simpsons the early episodes of NC are gold .
Troy zakey However, unlike The Simpsons NC is still very very good (or even better).
Troy zakey I'd say the earliest episodes of The Simpsons are silver, not gold. They're still deciding on characterization, the art isn't as refined, and Homer's voice sounds weird compared to the one from S2 onward.

I actually loved this show. No shame in that.
dis show is treeble
I enjoyed this show when I was little. I even remember liking the idea of a non-element power... something about the elements of the earth getting along with the good of humanity "heart"
Yeah. I didn't realize it got any hate. It was a fun superhero show with a message. And it didn't do a bad job teaching about environmental issues. And heart wasn't a terrible power, just a specialized one.
So does PhantomStrider.
I loved it to! It also inspired me to go into environmental science.
My brother's name is wheeler and he hates his name.
Did anyone else think Ma-Ti's ring allowed him to control/ comunicate with animals? I Think he had some Kind of mind reading there too. Sure its not Flashy but pretty useful

Why would crude oil weaken him, it comes from the earth?... I mean, I could understand if it was one of the run offs or some such made FROM it but just oil itself?
MeleeTiger i was wondering the same thing.
Well I think it's more of a metaphor for pollution. Many environmentalists HATE oil spills, as they see it as a danger to wildlife and the planet in general. And considering Ted Turner is an environmentalist himself, it's not surprising that whenever Captain Planet gets touched by oil or toxic waste, then he automatically becomes weak because it's a metaphor for how the environmentalists see how those things ruin the planet if that makes sense.
JoeRingo118 Yep you're correct. The point is that the oil is supposed to stay in the ground. There, it is not harmful to anyone. Not saying I personally agree with the sentiment, just describing the stance taken by the show.
Under the Woods
Oil isn't "supposed" to do anything and frequently leeches up out of the earth of its own accord. What do you think tar sands are? And oil is as natural as trees, I notice Captain Planet doesn't get weakened by all the oxygen the trees fart out even though it's a waste product of their metabolism and is deadly to obligate anaerobic life forms (in fact elemental oxygen is actually a highly corrosive oxidising agent and a neurotoxin). Or what about atmospheric nitrogen, that's all dumped up in the sky because nothing uses it.
JoeRingo118
You have the issue that environmentalists block production of modern facilities and force the use of older ones that generate huge amounts of pollution; they were so effective at blocking planning permission that the US only built one new oil refinery in 70 years.
Btw Ma-Ti was the youngest of them had he been older or more ruthless his heart power would have made him a god amongst men. He could have bent armies to his will. I thought it was lame too at the time but in reality his abilities were self limited.

TheDoctor8010 My voice gives me super strength!
i'm sorry serenity can't come to the phone right now because she's about to be deflowered
I'm seriously wondering now if this is where 4Kids got their dubbing inspiration from.
Screw your reference, I have money.
I mean the show looks stupid now but in the mind of a kid I learned a lot. Even the AIDS episode. They picked the kid playing basketball because around that time Magic Johnson came out with being HIV+ and you had all types of people saying they didn't want to play with him. They were just ignorant about the disease the hysteria was exaggerated on the show but it broke down the basics in a way kids could understand. I think kids learning about real world issues early is a good thing, they have more social intelligence than adults usually think tbh and telling them half truths or keeping them ignorant doens't help. So overall, I think it was good for its time and purpose. The gang violence and heroine episode totally missed the mark though lmao.
Most people were pretty oblivious to a lot of stuff until the beginning of the 21st century. I remember how parents demanded that a homosexual teacher should be fired because in their mind it was the same as being a pedophile as he would surely go after all the male kids...and that was near the end of the 90s.
That's another reason Todd should've been black...
I think not, I mean, if they want the show to hit a specific demografic (white male kids) they make a character more close to them, If they put a black player with aids in a mostly white school, it could backfire and give the impression that aids was a black disease (like for a lot of time aids was considered a gay disease)
It's just a different kid. They should've had the COACH be white and a few other black kids (so the school would be mixed.) Did anyone complain that Cyborg was black? No.
@@unwelldanny7108 another show in another time
You forgot about that kid who died by a overdose and they just let the corpse there. FOR FUCK SAKE, A KID ACTUALLY DIED ON A CARTOON SERIES, THATS INSANE.
Seriously, you need a redux about this, as painful as it sound.
That and add the New adventures or dubbed season 6.
There are two episodes supporting limiting how many children you can have. Even tough Turner has five kids.
There was also the episode where a kid was "infected" with HIV
I remember that episode! During a drug-addled riot on the capital, right?!
It also happened in a Fat Albert episode about gang violence.
"So Captain Planet, what other issues are you gonna talk to grade school kids about?"
"Aids?"
(Critic's mortified face) XD
So Captain Planet is supposed to stop pollution, but pollution is his weakness??!!! Man, that's stupid!!! It's like saying Superman tries to stop kryptonite when kryptonite is his weakness.
Superman stoped cryptonite metereo from crashing in earth xD
Cyborg has no weakness except for Grid.
He's only weak to it if it touches him. Other than that he is unaffected by it. Unlike superman, who can't get within 10m of kryptonite without getting an upset tum-tum.
Superman has stopped Krytonite-based villains, BUT they're a rare occurrence, so your point is valid.
I thought that too. It's like if Hercules cannot get any blood, sweat or dirt on his body
The drug addiction episode was honestly really shocking
One of the characters overdoses and dies which was unheard of in a kids cartoon
And don't forget being able of giving faintness to others

9:15 This explains the coronavirus and panic buying
I loved Captain Planet as a kid. Also, it makes sense for an indigenous person from the Amazon to have the power of heart; their cultures value the connection to the heart and to Pachamama (Mother Earth), more than they would value having "a cool superpower"; the latter is a very western thing.
9:21 OF COURSE!!!
1. "You'll pay for this, Captain Planet!" I feel like that should be used more online than it is.
2. The "Ruler" gag may just have the best timing of any gag Doug's ever done. The first time I saw this, I'd never anticipated any of the times he used it. Sure there's cues in the writing, but the preceding content distracted me well enough for the gag to be hilarious. Also, it was only done 3 times, and these instances were spaced out expertly enough provide the full impact.
3. Ah, the birth of Mati. It's pretty great how much he ended up being used up to To Boldly Flee.
I want "IT STINKS! UGH!" to be used more online than it is. That could become a new reaction meme.
So basically Gia is Sauron giving out five rings of power and binding the five teenager to her will though CP. I hate that show soo much
Holy crap! I never thought of it like that. That makes the show even less innocent after that episode that talked about Hitler.
Evershear Gaia.
Heart is actually not that bad of a power. Depending on the Writer. Heart based powers can actually be devastating. Empathy is one of Ravens primary powers and she is one of the most powerful Titans ever
Michael Joesph like manipulation and morality based
Cyborg is one of the most powerful Titans ever
i agree if he wanted to he could turn all of nature against the bad guys. whoo nelly i would not want to face that. Like he could call all of the tigers in asian rain forest against porchers well you can get the next scene
@@unwelldanny7108 Cyborg and Starfire were the two strongest Titans.
Actually the power of heart is the best power of them all by far. Maybe not at this point in Ma Ti's life but when he becomes a teenager and starts talking to girls, let me ask which of those 5 rings will be the most useful of them when it comes to picking up girls?
If Gaia had the power to make Captain Planet, then why didn't she just rid pollution herself. At least the Wizard of Shazam was dying when he made Billy Batson Shazam, Gaia has no excuse to make Captain Planet.
Gaia can't change the earth back because it was changed by Humans so Humans must be the ones to fix it. Captain Planet is the culmination of all that is good in humans and the earth. Hence why only humans with pure hearts can summon him. He isn't there to fix the planet, hes only there to stop disasters. The only people who can fix the planet are people like "You" because remember the power is yours.

I freaking LOVE the 90's man! :D
They all had villains talking mad shit in the end of each episode, like Looten Plunder at 13:18 or Dr.Claw saying: Next tiime Gadget.. Next tiiiiime!
You have to give Captain Planet this, it has some pretty good animation.
The exaggeration of the villains to the point of cartoonish supervillainy meant that children watching the show would not be troubled by their parents if they worked in a polluting industry. Loggers, for example, are not monsters, but had they been portrayed as such, that could have caused confusion and conflict, so the bad guys had to be as over the top as possible. The fact loggers are portrayed as complete monsters by some Animal Wrongs Groups who take the show as a holy writ for environmentalism suggests that as exaggerated as it was Strawman Has a Point. Unfortunately, this may have backfired, since the unrealistic and over-the-top nature of the villains has made them a frequent target for snark for adult viewers who are more knowledgeable about environmentalism.
I actually really love that they talked about HIV/AIDS!!! Good for them!!!
Yeah. The five-year-olds watching really benefited from that.
It was the first show to ever address the pandemic if I remember correctly! As someone going to school to be a producer for animation it makes me so happy that there are those that (even in the silliest shows) know the impact the medium can have.

Well, I wouldn't call it OP, it's actually pretty much in line with the other powers which are all pretty strong. Ability to literally control the earth around you is no joke.

I like to think that Wheeler doesn’t try to pour more power into his because his is arguably one of the more dangerous ones. Fire isn’t like Earth, Water, or Wind. It’s basically pure destruction in energy form. Use it irresponsibly or recklessly and you could kill someone
Heart is the best power of them all. Of those 5 rings, which one of these will be the most useful when Ma Ti becomes a teenager / young adult and starts talking to girls? Sure Wheeler can shoot fire out of his hand but Ma Ti will be able to get any girl he wants with his power.
But somehow it never seems to work on the big bads of the week

Seems whatever jail these villains were put in has more holes than Arkham Asylum. They are out faster than the Joker on a Christmas Tree Rocket.
The problem is that in most episodes the most punishment the villain would get would be a fine for contaminating, the Planeteers never think about denouncing the villains for trying to murder them.
Ah yes, a nostalgic Nostalgia Critic Review! I remember watching this almost 10 years ago. Today it's crazy to me that the whole internet at one point was 4:3.

for those wondering why the five elements and why one was heart: in many earth based religions there are 5 elements, and the 5th is spirit, which is often translated into energy. (This is why there are 5 points on a pentagram - each point represents a different element. Spirit being the top one - in the Wiccan pentacle, the Satanist pentagram has the point representing spirit at the body. So instead of saying spirit over body like in Wicca, it's saying body over spirit - because Satanism is a hedonistic religion)
Of course they try to not sound preachy or religious, and often just say heart. (W.I.T.C.H. did this too) Which often translates into them not being able to do much, but in reality it should be that they have control over life, death, energy and minds. Which I gotta say is pretty damn cool. Too bad they bastardize the concept so much that it ends up seeming lame.
I thought the fifth one was lightning
punchoutplayer penguin lightning = energy
as in Witch, Will the leader of the five guardians carried the Heart of Candracar which was needed for the team, in the beginning it was just plain energy (also she could speak to electrical things and make them work when there was no power. Ya know, everyone claims that heart was the worst power, but Ma-Ti got to use it a lot and it was actually pretty helpful. Wheeler's the one who got the rot end. What good is fire when the show won't let you incinerate the bad guys? He rarely got to use the thing, since most situations the Planeteers get into don't require/are made worse with fire.

This has to be one of my favorite Nostalgia Videos, Doug is hilarious in this one! Doug If you read this, come back to this guy, he's great!
The executive producer of the show, Nick Boxer, once pitched the idea of removing Captain Planet, the show just being the "Planeteers". But Ted Turner rejected the idea, so the team attempted to find way to keep the Planeteers empowered while Captain Planet did the heavy lifting. One way they did this was having the kids rescue Captain Planet himself when he is downed from time to time by the villains. So in a way, while Captain Planet does do the heavy lifting and rescues the Planeteers, when Captain Planet is down, the Planeteers, without their powers, must work together and rescue him as well. So in a way, the producers attempted to avert a Broken Aesop.
It left its mark on me and made me an environmentalist, so I disagree. As for Ma-Ti, he has the power to influence people, magnify their positive feelings, such as compassion, and communicate from a distance, as if he had telepathy. Side Note: He was voiced by Scott Menville, aka Robin from Teen Titans. And I think the reason why Gaia didn't do it alone is because she wanted humans to set an example, or maybe because even she had limitations and therefore needed help.
We're the Planteers! You can be one too! Cuz' saving our planet is the thing to do!

If you've actually read Greek mythology Gaia getting other people to do her dirty work is pretty in-character
Heart was a lame power by comparison, but it did more than "make people feel better." It was a combination of empathy, telepathy, and universal animal translator, like if Charles Xavier was Aquaman.
I remember watching this as a kid too. My favorite episode was the Captain Pollution 2-parter.

@@unwelldanny7108 RIP Chadwick!
The problem is people miss the symbolism in the show when they take it too literally. The villains weren't supposed to be real people, because no one pollutes the planet intentionally or for fun. The Planeteers are also symbolic of people who help protect the environment, From Wheeler who has more heart than brains to Kwame who is the leader of the group. Captain Planet is a symbol of how strong we can become when we work together. And Gaia is symbolic of the Earth asking for our help.
Even if that is true. Why is Heart and Hate even the power vs opposite power?. Its not even sensical interms of 5 elemental powers. It would at best be "Spirit vs Chaos", and those usually arent powers, its just internal things in beings.
But outside that, its a cheesy fun cartoon. I mean i have no clue what stopping Hitler has to do with wounding Captain Planet (OUR HERO). Since extremist ideologies vs saving the planet is a different thing. I may ramble. But i do love senseless fun... its just some stuff is fun to poke at.

I don't know why people from America hated this show so much. When it came on TV I was in primary school (elementary) in South Africa. We only had two TV channels, and this show always came on on Fridays, so we always associated it as a Friday afternoon cartoon, the last day of school for the week. Even to this day we fondly remember the intro and ending. While maybe as adults people seem to find one liners stupid, when watching the cartoon it made sense because he is making fun of the villains' plans.

Heart is like the Grass type in pokemon. We think it's useless, but it has a deeper meaning
9:28 did they just say sex on cartoon network Oh lord
Bring Ma Ti back!!
He have to bring him back from the Beyond
Zombiekilleryamato What happen to him?
***** Watch the movie "To Boldly Flee", which you can find on ChannelAwesome.com, or you could probably find it on UA-cam for free.
The actor portraying him has basically stopped being friends with Doug and Rob…
Scott Sandler aww
I still remember the episode about the gorillas. Where it's supposed to be a what-if scenario where the poacher villain just straight-up murders the planeteers. Anyone else remember that episode? Oh and the one about over-population told with a rat-people metaphor, and all the rat people die in the end. Every. Single. One of them. You know, for the kids!
See, you still remember this shit BECAUSE IT WAS GOOD. The one you mentioned got me thinking about the why and how and workings of Gaia. She comes to a kid from the future, remember? She can't intervene personally. She can only work through others. But she is atemporal and can manipulate history, which is pretty awesome.
I know its hard to believe but, some of us do those things Captain planet teachers us.
The villains of this show even took a page out of the heroes' book and made The Rings of Destruction, and when the villain's polluting powers combine they made Captain Pollution
Turns out Todd, the kid who got aids, was voiced by a young Neil Patrick Harris. Knowing that gives the episode (and Todd to an extent) a whole new meaning.
He was 19 when he voiced Todd, so Todd himself must be 19 years old. Good! Because I think he's hot.
One of the best NC Reviews ever!
Love you Ma Ti!!!!!
I never got to watch this show as a kid but I always wanted to.
I just realized this is how I found your channel awhile ago.
Also btw I loved captain planet and even got up early to see it in the mornings.
On the plus side, if this show didn't exist, we wouldn't have gotten that episode of OK KO. Boxman fawning over Dr. Blight was hilarious.

I loved this show when I was little! I even had (have) some of the toys. And I remember it got me to start cutting up the plastic six-pack soft drink holders before throwing them in the trash!
I loved Captain Planet when I was younger
That bit where he accidentally puts on the One Ring still makes me laugh my ass off to this day.
