You’re telling me... in 2003, my best friend was murdered (we were teens) and I wound up blasting this song on repeat all night that first evening, just balling my eyes out. It still takes me back to that desperation, all these years later.
the original lineup with carlos is the closet a pure rock band has gotten to the full package this century. maybe the strokes but interpol had everything you want in an indie band.
@@blunderless First off, you're wrong: Interpol are considered to be stylistically both Indie Rock and Post-Punk, which can be confirmed by a quick google search. Second off, their record label, Matador records, is an independent label, making Interpol an indie band in the traditional definition as well
@@liamwaterman2065 First off, you're wrong: matador isn't exclusively indie & was made before indie popularity made it to the states. Second off, calling turn on the bright lights indie, is like calling cereal soup.
***** The funniest shit is when he did at at Glastonbury the footage is all black and white yet every other band is on color. It was like they tried to dumb it down. Oh Carlos, we hardly knew thee lolol.

Does the actual recording of this song have the bass in it? Obviously the video does and you can clearly hear it but the recording sounds like the keyboards replaced the bass. Maybe it's just me. Anyways, I love the bass in this song.
Pretty sure it doesn't. At least I don't hear it on the studio version. I think Carlos just added the bass parts after they got a touring keyboardist, because at one point he played the keys on this song live. I think that would've been cooler to see, the bass on this song seems a bit unnecessary compared to the big cinematic synths, but maybe that's just me.
@Tony Yeah, looking back I do hear the bass for a few bars in the climax of the studio version, but the high part he plays here are not present. Still, I think they played it without a bassist on the 2001 Route du Rock and it still sounded pretty good.
I LOVE this performance. It's charming to see Interpol in their earlier days. But calling this their best live performance is an insult to the rest of their live career. Whether you're one of the people who thinks that TOTBL is the only good album they ever put out, or whether you're someone who likes their entire discography, I feel it is undeniable that they became much better live (especially Paul and Dan) as their career went on. Watch their 2005 Eurockeennes performance to see what I mean.
I disagree, I think their early gigs were the best in terms of sound quality. Watch the 2003 cologne show to see what I mean. After Carlos departure, they became a little bit “hollow” IMO, and Paul’s voice became worse. Only now (2023) after the release of The Other Side of Make Believe, the live shows are better.
This song is beyond beautiful..

they weren't indie here, they were post-punk which is probably the only reason people compare them to joy division.

The Strokes just didn't have the songs though
this is hands down the best version of this song ever
Love Carlos’ simple but effective baseline in this it adds so much to it that the album version lacks
or could say.. hands away the best version
@@Wisdawms Nice!
0:35 that looked so cool
It must of been great seeing Carlos D enjoying himself when performing. After Antics he became so lifeless.
***** Bolo Tie = Shitty Attitude Carlos. He should have known the curse of the bolo tie after Brandon Flowers tsk tsk haha.
Haha. We want Combat Boot Carlos D!!!
***** YEAH! ...and maybe "red armband Carlos" too but maybe not in some parts of Europe lol.

Mother of God, these guys are class at its finest.
I would love to have been there! They are the perfect band.
What I love is that they get into such a synced groove - that energy really shines through

This was the best live performance done by interpol. Wow just awesome
They are at their best with the (2) guitar lineup!!!!
I love how intense Carlos is during these lol.
At 1,58 the woman who, turning back towards the man, seems to say with a smile: "How good they are, right?"
mmmh no

Timothy McKim in some live versions the keyboard replaces the Bass... idk why they switch back and forth.

Amazing! Is there more from this show?! This is so raw. So glad Interpol has not strayed from this setting.
In my top ten of best songs ever. Beautiful shoegaze.
Is it really shoegaze though? It doesn't sound like it to me.
@@Vagabond-Cosmique It is. Even though they are a rock band but in this song you can definitely see the shoegaze style
