2023 Nissan Altima - Can it Ever Overcome BAE?

  • The refreshed Nissan 2023 competes near the top of the dwindling mid-side sedan market. Come along as we take a test drivie in a value packed SV trim level with its naturally aspirated 2.5 direct injected four cylinder. Complaints are few as the Altima has a quiet cabin and handles quite well. Coming in at less than $28K, Nissan offers cost weary buyers a real choice in this age of inflated car pricing and the rush to EVs. And how can Nissan ever overcome big Altima energy? When you dump your production into the rental car fleet, its kinda self inflicted.

    I rented this exact same trim level car a few months ago, I drove it for around 2,000 miles and it was just fine. The transmission really feels like a conventional one and it's very smooth and responsive. I sure missed auto climate control, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, although it has lane departure warning (steering wheel vibration) and blind spot monitoring. Backup camera is real crap though and you can't see anything out of it at night. I tried to adjust all the settings but nothing could help it. Very good LED headlights and the auto high beam works pretty well too. There was no auto dimming rearview mirror and no automatic wipers. Also it's pretty annoying to have the one touch auto window up/down function only for the driver. Seats are really comfortable and the driver gets electric adjustments with the front part of the seat tipping up and down. Remote start and keyless are another nice to have thing for this kind of car.

      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. You provide a great overview of pluses and minuses. It is a very pleasant highway traveler. Nissan gets aways with a lot of little shortcoming because they dump into the rental fleet. Overall I enjoyed the handling also. Really not a bad driving car. Thanks again and happy motoring.

    At 72 just bought my first non-Chevy with a '23 Altima 2.5 SL AWD. (Brand new on the lot with 11 miles in March '24) I have found the SL to be highly competent in many areas. As someone who owned Z28s and the Chevy SS Performance Sedan I am very satisfied with the Altima's cornering and handling. I live at 6,600' surrounded by many hilly grades and curves. The 2.5 has no problem maintaining uphill speed at 10 over the posted limit. I would recommend an Altima to anyone looking for a great daily driver, or road trip car, with an eye to value for the money.

    This 2.5L 4 cylinder CVT should be the one to power the Sentra. And the VC turbo engine should be the only engine available for this Altima. The current Sentra and this Altima are underpowered.

      @BeyondTheTestDrive  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Good points. I think engine choice is based a lot on keeping the price down. But a 2.5’in the Sentra would be a good option and probably still pretty fuel efficient. The VC turbo’s long term reliability is still a question. I think the consensus is everyone lies it in the Altima but it is hampered by the CVT. I think for sedans to stay relevant outside of the EV world these type of options you mention would help. All the best and happy motoring.

      Like the car. Ready to get back into a sedan. Wish this car had a manual but that’s not available anywhere in this segment

      While it's not super fast, I never felt my 2.5 was underpowered. It is pretty zippy at higher rpms when you push it but it's net positive is the great efficiency the engine gets when you drive it in a reserved manner.

    Looking into Sv with premium package , all other cars in a segment are insanely overpriced in Sri-state area
    P.S. Is blinker actually that loud?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  11 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for watching and the question. Glad you are considering it as it is comfortable, quiet, drives really well, and is good on gas. The CVT is actually quite good. And you should be able to get a good price. I think the blinker volume comes across as a little louder than it was but yes, I found it annoying. I had to rewatch it to jog my memory. Good luck and keep and keep in touch on what you finally get.

    Love my 23, I just notice at slower speeds that the transmission feels a bit sluggish/jerky

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  10 місяців тому

      Congrats. Great car. 🤔. I did not notice any of that. But CVTs can be a little slow to downshift or change ratios. But should be fairly smooth. Something to keep an eye on. All the best and happy motoring

      The regular drive mode is essentially an eco mode. It does its best for efficiency so yeah, it does feel sluggish during normal driving. Sports mode seems to liven it up a bit.

    uh huh - so what does bae mean?

    • @BeyondTheTestDrive
      @BeyondTheTestDrive  Рік тому

      Big Altima Energy. One of the biggest user groups on Facebook dedicated to poking fun at Altima’s claiming they are all owned by folks who could care less about upkeep and obeying traffic laws and common courtesy. Sort of the price Nissan is paying now since they dumped Altimas on rental car fleets for years and years. It’s just silly fun. Not real serious. And statistically Altimas are in no worse shape then any other mainstream used sedan. BAE is now part of auto car slang.

      Here is 2007 Nissan Altima 2.5 with 275,000 miles on Original engine and transmission! Still going strong normal tear and wear for age. All that question about CVT quality is TOTAL dilership FAULT at all. 15 years ago I asked the dilership about changing the transmission oil ALL OF THEM, they said IT IS LIFETIME FLUID it is total BS. I change by myself the fluid every 40,000 miles and my Altima CVT is still like day 1! People who trusted the dilership about the fluid ALL thay trash they cars!
      On 2000 miles maybe is manufacturing defects thay gonna change the transmission. Otherwise is not bad transmission but change transmission oil on max every 40,000!
