  • Опубліковано 16 вер 2024
  • The conversation revolves around the BBC's handling of the £200,000 salary paid to Huw Edwards after his arrest and conviction. The speakers discuss the BBC's efforts to recover the money, including formal requests and the possibility of legal action. Aaqil Ahmed, former head of religion and ethics at the BBC, acknowledges the difficulty of the situation and suggests that the BBC should have taken legal advice and pursued recovery more aggressively.

Do not forget that the TV licence also would of gone to pay Jimmy Saville, help keep him in a job for decades with the BBC. I think Saville was operating for over 60 years in TV & most was BBC. No cinvictions, died free. People even lined the streets to give Saville a state funeral. It's just sickening.

I ended up unemployed and I owed the council money and they took it out of my benefits which made me short while I was getting back on my feet. I'm sure taking money off someone is not that hard.

The BBC refused to take it down but instead repaired it when it was attacked. Its allowed and ignored by BBC.

Govts can freeze bank accounts where serious crime is involved. Banks can terminate accounts if it thinks it is in their best interests. I'm sure the BBC can employ their vast legal team to come up with a solution. There may well be a legal argument which permits an employer to retrieve money from a pension, if all other means fail. However, the longer this drags on and recedes from public view, the more likely it is for the BBC to drop this.

I'm with Aaqil on this one. Obviously the money should be paid back, but allowing corporations to raid the pensions of their employees or ex-employees is a very dangerous precedent for us all. Request the money back and if he refuses then sue for it legally. That's the only and proper way to do it. 'Sending the boys round' on the behest of a corporation or government entity is also a dangerous precedent.
