It's scary to open your heart to someone and to be vulnerable. But guess what? Vulnerable people are powerful people. Here is Amy P. on easing into love and loving love. We love it!
Dear Amy, I sent this question to you years ago and to this day I appreciate this advice. This video meant the world to me at the time and it still does. Thank you for being one of my favorite comedians and an incredible inspiration to me.
All of us get jealous sometimes Melissa. Focus on what you love about yourself; the little things that are "just you", that make you special and unique. And use those talents for good: volunteer, help out a classmate who maybe is also struggling with self-esteem, write out your feeling in a journal entry.
Hi Amy, I'm not a young person but I wanted to say thank you for all of your wonderful, insightful messages to young people. It's lovely to know that not everyone in 'show business' has to be a tool!
I've watched all of Amy Poehler's Ask Amy videos & think Amy gives some of the best advice I've seen. Second, I think Amy Poehler rocks! And third, I, 100 percent agree with what Amy said in this video. It's better to feel, be open, be vulnerable, to give, to share, & put yourself out there THAN the alternative. One of the best things about being a human being is the capability to love, to give, share, receive, experience love. So, it's always best to try to love while you're still alive.
My dad has a hard time with this... he said what really helped him was doing things that were good for his body: sleep, yoga, eating well, exercise and most importantly, lowering his stress level. I think that by listening to your body, adjusting to meet its needs, and trying to understand that this is not something to feel ashamed about, don't apologize for something you couldn't control, you'll be able to feel more open and accepting of yourself and the way you continue on in the world

Amy, thanks for using your influence and talent for trying to change the world! I do not regret being your fan! Lots of love!!!
Hi Maddy! I've struggled with low-self esteem all through high school and even now at times (I'm 25), and so far, I find the things that help are doing whats good for your body and mind without the idea that it means "losing weight", or "looking better", its about feeling better: good sleep, healthy eating, exercise thats fun, and surround myself with people who love me regardless of my appearance. I don't think it ever goes away, but it gets much easier!
I love watching these so much... Amy it's so refreshing to see someone as talented and famous as you are taking the time to address all the little things we like to ask you :) xx
Ahaha Tennyson the great hip hop producer! Oh I love you, Amy. :) What great advice, and what a wonderful sense of humor you have. I'm glad you exist and that you make these videos! Smart Girls rocks!
of completely banishing loneliness from our lives, but it is not always a bad thing to feel separated from time to time - it gives a person a chance to reflect upon themselves, getting to know themselves better and to muster strength from within and to find freedom in not always being dependent on others, as much as they might love you and want your best.
Thank you so much for answering my question Amy! I will try my best to enjoy being in love and I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the advice. Thank you!
you are such an inspiration to me amy. you're an amazing human being. all the advice you give is so sincere and genuine and i feel like you know me. thank you for everything.
out to them. Tell them that you love them and feel grateful for them being in your life, but you also feel like you don't get understanding, even as you know they care about you too, and wish that you could talk to them about anything that's on your mind. I wish you courage and would like to remind you that the good things come not only to those who wait, but also to those who reach out and show their understanding, vulnerability and love to their loved ones. Of course there is no way
Maddy: I've never been openly happy with my body, but I do think that every time I give up worrying and doing something to change it, it is in a way, accepting my own body. I feel that if I was that distressed with my appearance I would desire to change it so badly I would surely gain the commitment to do so. The only way I've managed to change my own body through an exercise regime is to use a personal trainer. If you get a good one they will be worth the money!
Dear Amy, I'm having a really hard time figuring out what I want to do as far as college. I'm going to be a freshman in college this year, and I thought I had it figured out, but I am having second thoughts. I don't know what I want to do and it's stressing me out. I don't know how to bring this up to my family, but I'm scared out of my mind about where I'm going to end up and I don't know who to talk to about my second thoughts. Thank you so much, you've changed my life so much. Love, Melissa
P.S. It's a good thing that you recognize the trap in the belief that in a relationship you will be less alone. It might be, if you were in a good relationship, but on the other hand, if you just settle for something not as good, then the loneliness will certainly stay just the same as before. Try and learn to know yourself, then accept & love yourself for who you are, then recognize and address what you don't like about yourself and why, and you can be your best friend. Not easy, but worth it.
Sally Kim, I think I know how you feel. We are, ultimately, the only person who knows who we truly are. As much as we can try to relate to other people, it is just that, relating, it is not a Vulcan mind-meld! So really what I'm saying is that there are always doubts and worries with every relationship that you are being misread or mislead (Family can be an exception, as they have little to gain through deception). Feeling alone in this world I think is normal, treasure those times you do not!
Pro tip : love is not a sign of weakness, quite the contrary, it is a sign of strenght. You need to be a very powerful person to love, so do not feel ashamed or weak or vulnerable about it.
Dear Amy, I'm 20 and my mom recently passed away from Leukemia. I was wondering if you've experienced a loss, how you dealt with it, and how to get closure. Love this channel- you are an amazing woman. Much love -Lauren
Hi Amy! My name is India and I live in Australia! Do you think friendship and relationships are significantly different now than what they used to be without technology being with us 24/7? Thankyou Amy! I'm a huge fan and just love and respect everything you do! Xxx
Okay I know I comment a lot, but this is actually my question that I would like to be answered: Dear Amy, I get jealous really easily, and it's mostly of my friends. I love them but me being so jealous all the time is pretty frustrating. I think it's because I don't think of myself as attractive. I would love to know how to manage my feelings and be more confident. Love, Melissa :)
Dear Amy, I am 24 and my parents have been together for 25 years. Nothing is more important to me than my family and recently my parent's marriage has been rocky. My mom confided in me that things could even escalade to a divorce. Even as an adult this matter is extremely sensitive and difficult for me. It has taken an emotional toll on me and it is effecting my school. How can I deal with something that I have no control over, but has so much impact on my life? Thanks, Melisa.
dear amy, I have never ever in my life told anyone about my problems not even once because my mom always tells me how lucky I am and makes me feel bad about myself. I always try to hide with being jokey and angry if you catch my drift... all the love and support from your biggest fan, alexa age 14 PS: POEHLER FEY 2016!!!
I've been in love 3 times. Opened my self up 3 times. Crushed twice. I may be getting crushed again as we speak. I don't know how much more my heart can take.

Dear Amy, Sometimes I get really frustrated and angry when something happens and I tend to let people know by talking about it in an angry tone. I'm not sure if it's the best way to deal with it. After I let people know I'm angry and then I let it sit for a while, I feel bad about letting people know how angry I was. Is it bad to feel bad about getting angry and sharing your thoughts, or is there a healthier way to deal with it? Thank you for everything you do, you're so inspiring! Love, Melissa

Yeah, I'd rather have my heart broken 3 times more than not being able to say I was once in love, how sad it must be not to have the guts to just go and say it!! :)
Amy, For years, I've been working really hard towards a goal that I know is a long shot. Life is short, though, and I know that if I do somehow reach the goal, all of my hard work will be so very worth it. Hi Amy, I have a solid group of girl friends that I trust and love, but sometimes I feel like I'm putting so much more effort into the relationship than they are. I feel like sometimes people don't even care about me because of the lack of effort on their side (if that makes sense?) and i don't really know how to go about fixing my problem, since mentioning it might sound annoying and needy. Hey Amy this is Hayden and I'm a guy just to let u know but I'm a huge nerd for parks and recreation and I binge watch it every day it's my favorite show and your May favorite com idiom but I was watching season 5 episode 16 and the shirt you have on is close or the same as the one that your wearing in the video so I was just curious if u were making the video on set or after...please reply your the best
How do you get over insecurities and comparing yourselves to other girls and your current significant others' exes? It always gets to me no matter how much I try to focus on what I have.
Dear Amy, I tend to like to be alone and I find myself bored and almost feeling numb most of the time. I want to try new things and find my passion in life but for some reason i just can't motivate myself. I make excuses and put off trying things i have always wanted to try. How do you overcome fears and negative over thinking enough that you can try new things and take chances, how do you motivate yourself? Sarah, p.s I love this channel
Hi burn2609, I'm not Amy, but I hope this will help anyway. :) I also started high school recently and I feel like we're in the same boat. I also get anxious around new people and I'm not very athletic. But I feel like you'll never know if you really like cross country unless you try it. You might even find you are more athletic than you thought you were. I'm trying to get more involved in my high school as well, so you're not alone. :)

Dear Amy, I'm 18 and about 9 years ago I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and 8 years ago I had a colectomy to basically save my life, and while I'm doing better than I was before the surgery, my body still doesn't work the way it was supposed to and I'm worried that it'll affect me keeping a job because of how frequently I would need a break. How can I stay positive and optimistic? How can I learn to accept my body the way it is, and not let it discourage me anymore? -Jackie
Dear Amy, My dad suffers from severe depression, and extreme anxiety, and he always seems to take his troubles out on me. Well, all he ever does now is yell at me and tell me what I'm not good at, and that I'm the cause off his troubles. That last part is totally not fair, but he doesn't see that, and I'm almost at my breaking point. How do I tell him to take a step back and look at how he's making me feel without totally yelling at him? Lots of love, Deanna
Hi Amy! When I was a wee gal, my dad took me to see A League of Their Own, that was my first feeling of empowerment knowing that women could play baseball just as hard and just as good as the guys could! After that, I got a mitt and ball and was out on the field with the guys. What was your first empowerment moment?
Dear Amy, My name is Ellie and I'm fifteen years old. My question is this: How do I cope with moving so much? My dad is a Marine and I have moved 11 times in my life. It gets really hard, especially when I have to leave my friends, but it is not my choice and definitely not something I want.
Amy, you beautiful tropical fish.
Dear Amy,
I sent this question to you years ago and to this day I appreciate this advice. This video meant the world to me at the time and it still does. Thank you for being one of my favorite comedians and an incredible inspiration to me.
It's beautiful how all of the things we love about Leslie Knope we love because that's who Amy really is.

Amy is awesome. I appreciate all of the great advice she gives.
It's nice to hear this. I relate with Summer and I felt like her question could very easily also be my question. Thanks for the answer and advice.

WHAT Amy has a youtube channel?! I immediately subscribed.
;-P
You'll have to try a lot harder than that to lose me!
I've loved Smart Girls from way back when it was 'Smart Girls At The Party' and wasn't on UA-cam.
And obviously my love for ACTUAL smart girls started when I was born.
Keep up the great work!
You're so full of love Amy
Actually, in every country it's hard to be who you want to be: it's up to you to stay true.

Yes, I second that!! Long-distance is the pits. Any advice on how to cope, how to do it "right", and how to not get discouraged or insecure?
I'm not Amy, but I'll try to answer that for my part. It's the least I can do. As Amy said: to feel connected you have to reach out yourself, as well. Love always,

You are truly an amazing person.
Amy you're my inspiration :)
This videos really are wonderful :)
I LOVE YOU, AMY POEHLER.

Now I get to have more fun... DANCE PARTY!
Hi Amy! My names Emma and this year I will be starting my first year of high school. I'm ready to start a new chapter of my life, yet I'm so comfortable with where everything is right now. How do I come out of my comfort zone for such a big transition like this? Thank you so much.
Hi Amy! I'm 16, and everyone around me talks about me behind my back, calling me gay and stuff. I've never admitted it, but i am. Normally it's just random people in my year saying these things, and frankly, I don't care what they think about me. thank you for sharing your point of views ;)
Haha did we lose you after that? There's some great stuff about love in there somewhere! And a joke about Alfred Lord Tennyson!
We need a new video every week! :)

Hey, Amy! Just found your channel. Love it so far, only thought is the name "Smart Girls" seems a little redundant.. ;)
Dear Amy,
I tend to like to be alone and I find myself bored and almost feeling numb most of the time. I want to try new things and find my passion in life but for some reason i just can't motivate myself. I make excuses and put off trying things i have always wanted to try. How do you overcome fears and negative over thinking enough that you can try new things and take chances, how do you motivate yourself?
Sarah,
p.s I love this channel
I have a huge crush on Amy.
Amy Poehler is so adorable.

You look super pretty. I'm so jealous of you.
Hi Amy!
When I was a wee gal, my dad took me to see A League of Their Own, that was my first feeling of empowerment knowing that women could play baseball just as hard and just as good as the guys could! After that, I got a mitt and ball and was out on the field with the guys. What was your first empowerment moment?
Dear Amy,
My name is Ellie and I'm fifteen years old. My question is this: How do I cope with moving so much? My dad is a Marine and I have moved 11 times in my life. It gets really hard, especially when I have to leave my friends, but it is not my choice and definitely not something I want.
Same situation over here ^ Would love to hear an answer :)
