Today we’re looking at the Dymo LabelManager 160 Label maker. This is Dymo’s entry level Label Maker in the consumer market.
The Dymo LabelManager 160 is about 8 inches and fits comfortably in the hands. It is a bit on the chunkier side but is still very much something you can carry around and use. The LCD display on top of the unit is pretty clear and very readable. A backlight would have been a helpful addition, but at this price point, its hard to complain. The power and print buttons are colored light blue and have some formatting buttons for Bold, Italics, Underlined and vertical printing in between them. Right under those are the menu button, the navigation keys and the back button. The buttons on the keyboard of the Dymo LabelManager 160 are very clearly laid out and have a nice soft-touch feel to them. The most impressive thing about the layout is how intuitive this LabelManager 160 feels- there’s almost no need for an instruction manual. On the right hand edge you have the cut button which cuts labels to size, once they are done printing.
The Dymo LabelManager 160 is powered by 6AAA batteries instead of AA’s for some strange reason. This is a little annoying, considering most people don’t have AAA’s lying around. But it isn’t such a serious issue since you won’t be changing batteries all that often. Its pretty efficient on battery power and even turns itself off after a few seconds, if left unused, to conserve batteries. Alternatively, you can also power the Dymo LabelManager 160 using an optional AC power supply. We don’t really recommend this, as it takes away from the portability of the Dymo LabelManager 160 Label Maker. Nevertheless, its still an option.
The D1 label casette loads into the back of the Dymo LabelManager 160 and is available in ¼”, ⅜” and ½” sizes or 6, 9 and 12mm sizes for the metric folks. The starter cassette is 10ft long but regular label cassettes are 23 feet long. The D1 label tapes are also available in a variety of font color, background color and material selections. I’ll leave links to some of the different types of labels in the description below. Dymo also designed this clever little window into the back of the LabelManager 160 that shows you what type of label cassette is currently loaded in the machine- a neat little touch.
The print quality on the Dymo LabelManager 160 is also very crisp and clear, as you can see here, and the device printed without jamming or misprinting, throughout our tests. The D1 labels also adhered surprisingly well on most surfaces and even worked well when used to label wires and cables.
So our overall thoughts about the Dymo LabelManager 160 handheld label maker. The LabelManager 160 Label Maker is an exceptional product- its very well designed, is extremely easy to use, prints well, is priced right and just works as advertised. Absolutely, a great organizing tool to have around the house. However, if you’re looking for a more commercial, rugged labeler, we’d recommend the RhinoPro Series of Labelers from Dymo. Those are better suited to more commercial applications. I’ll put links to all these devices in the description below. Hope you found this review useful. I looked at other label makers for a comparison to this one. I will probably buy this one simply for the ease of use. This demonstration was very well done. Best demo I found so far. V good job.

Good tutorial - watched this after receiving my 160 this afternoon (great price on amazon)... just one point, the inscriptions inside the battery compartment of my unit are actually back to front. In other words the batteries have to be installed the opposite way round! Apart from that a great tool for labelling my spice jars... just trying to figure out how you got the border around the text? (Oh, cancel the last... wife has worked it out!.... you press the button marked with a square with a 'U' inside it (repeated presses gives various border options)
I just bought one and I put the cartridge in and it keeps telling me paper jam,, but I haven't used it and its new
+barbara torres Take the cartridge out. Use a pen or your finger to unspool the reel a bit, using the round knob on the side. Re-insert the cartridge and use the cutter to trim off the unspooled length. It should work now.

The only reason I'm currently searching for videos on the Dymo label makers is to hear if there are any sounds when it's printing out and you did not cover that in this video. That's the only thing keeping me from purchasing this device.

New user. Still not happy. Although I agree with you that it is close to intuitive for use, there are a great many things that I cannot yet do. Such as clear the last letters of the label I made to make a new one. And then it isn't intuitive to me as to how to get to all of the different menu items.

Anyone know how well the tape keeps stuck on the item your sticking it on ? Hard plastic ? Cardboard ?
I can't figure out how to clear the display and start a new label. All I can do is backspace. That's annoying.
There is unfortunately no clear option. You just have to keep hitting backspace

My Dymo 160 does not print... is it possible that if the batteries are nearly finished the Dymo is not printing ??? The label comes out but there are no letters on itOr do I need an ink tape
I bought the dymo 160 I asked the fella at the store if the three quarter inch label would fit in this particular label maker and he said yes he said as long as it's Martin D1 and it was but it does not fit in the label printer am I doing something wrong or was he wrong about it

So the label cartridges determine the "ink" color? The label maker doesn't print strictly black? I'd like to print white lettering onto black labels. Didn't know if I needed a specific label maker for that...

For some reason my machine isn't printing anything, although I've used it many times before. Plain white tape comes out. I thought maybe there is an ink cartridge but no. Does anybody know why this is happening?

I would suggest returning the unit. Seems like you got a defective unit.

Yes it does have the pound symbol. And yes you can print price labels. It isn’t the most cost effective method though

Fold gently along the horizontal center line. The backing should peel.
I would say fold along the "lengthwise" center line.

I’ve been wanting to get a label printer for my small business for the longest time and finally pulled the trigger. I’m glad I did ! It’s less than 1/4 the size of my regular printer.Set up was fairly easy. Seller will email you a link with video instructions Which I found to be more helpful than the written instructions. I use a Mac and had no issues. They even included an adaptor for USB to USB-c which is great because I’m always losing mine! I had a few issues getting the labels to print properly and wasted quite a few sheets. You need to play around with the settings to get everything adjusted just right. If you have the wrong settings, it’ll crop off the edges or feed through blank labels. These aren’t issues with the machine though, just user error.
