For those who like some of what they’ve seen here but are put off by some of Mork Borg’s design and trappings, I highly recommend checking out Death in Space from Free League. It uses a more fleshed out version of Mork Borg’s system, it’s layout is actually readable without a bunch of low effort photoshop art, and its tone and setting is less “edgelord grimfuck” and more of a traditional high sci-fi.

I'm hoping to be that GM that runs non D&D games and show people that there is more to TTRPGS than just D&D.
Terrific game! One of the things I love about this and other small press games is those charts and whatnot for sure. I like games I can pick up, play the included adventure or generate one in a few minutes.
Good review! Remember the line from never ending story about the nothing-“was it blackness? No, that would be something- this is nothing….” The universe collapses into nothing…
Professor I’m going to need you to get a Swedish friend to record themselves saying that name because out of this entire video the pronunciation bombshell has me the most shaken.
Every time he says Mork Borg (sounds very like Officer Crabtree's "Good Moaning" from 'Allo 'Allo) it had my brain interjecting with MorkBork (the pavlovian conditioning to only hear it as sounding like barkbark). 😂🤣😂
I think there was some confusion in explaining the sound. It is pronounced like "Murk Bory" but that y has the same sound as y in "yard" (not y in happy).
I heard that swedish word "mörk" is basically the same as "murky" in english. The ö/u here has the same pronunciation . The "g" in "borg" is pronounced as "j"
Ouch, right in the wallet! I actually did not buy murk bori because of all the overtly Satanic imagery... even though I don't think that it's meant to be taken seriously. I just don't like it. This one might be a little more accessible for me. I'm glad that you're showcasing a wide variety of games these days. Especially since WotC has talked everyone out of only playing D&D.
Lol. When I taped this video I had the WORST stomach virus in my entire life. 3 days. I had to take two days off from school which I never do. Every time I said "cutworm" I felt like going to the bathroom.
This looks amazing, but I've already got Death in Space if I need to scratch that Mork Borg in Space itch... Let's be honest I'll probably still buy this 😅😭
Leveling happens at the GM's discretion. I tend to level my players on the fibonacci sequence. So, more often at first, but much slower as time goes on. Also,, there's no "infinite" level, and it's possible for a stat to go down.
This sounds great! My brother-in-law started a gaming community. We mostly play Warhammer 40K but I think I may have some takers if I were to suggest this. I'm also very interested in the other one you mentioned. "Swedish Death Metal." That was all you needed to say, haha!
Edit: sorry Prof DM, I was hearing all your "Myerks" in the video proper, but you nailed it in the intro. Hate to quibble with the Swedes but while Prof is saying Borg correctly (Bohr-ee), ‘myerk’ is incorrect. There’s no no Y sound after the M like in ‘mjölk’ or ‘björk’ Mörk Borg basically rhymes with Kirk Story if it was said by Scotty from Star Trek
Cool review professor. im about all tapped out in the new books i can buy department but i will eventually pick this up. You should check out THE MASTICATOR GATE PREMIUM EDITION BUNDLE. It has a card deck of 12 head/12torso/12legs monster cards. Freaking genius IMO. Im currently letting the players all draw one card and using them that way for boss fights. The adventure is ok, but the cards are genius. They can be found on drive-thru as well fairly cheap. The cards have some stats in MORK BORG but you could use them in any game. They are called "The Endless Demon Deck" and by my math that is 1,728 random boss fights.
I'm having some difficulty hearing that. It is "Buree" like furry, or "Buray" like hooray? At least I can stop saying Mork Borg and thinking of an assimilated Robin Williams.
You've ALMOST got the pronunciation right, professor. Drop two octaves, use a demonic tone, and scream "Mork Booooriiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!", and then you've got it.
Cool! Feels like Mork Borg's take on how a husk outbreak from the Mass Effect franchise might play out. Also, if anyone is interested in diseases/parasites they should look in Carl Zimmer's "Parasite Rex"!
How'd I miss this? I like coverage of SF offerings. The fantasy stuff is good for indy modern takes, but it's quite crowded and I have a pref for an SF setting. I've got a copy of Cy_borg, I think I'll need to pick up this Vast Grimm! The presentation is more artsy than practical but I like the take. Thanks!
@Dungeon Craft I have mostly been soloing mork borg but may have two players interested! Don't ask me how many times my gutter born scum and fanged deserter have met their untimely end....

Never actually given any of their products a BAD review. Two of them I gave marginally passive reviews. But their products are Big Macs in a filet mignon world of independent RPGs.
@DUNGEONCRAFT1 in the brand sense that a Big Mac is the same in Boca Raton, FL as it is Birch Bay, WA, yes. But honestly, most indie games aren't much more than Zines. So, that metaphor only goes so far. In a quality sense, there are very few specific games I'd put in the Filet Mignon category: Index Card RPG, Shadow Dark, 13th Age, and Shadow of the Demon Lord. The only company that consistently serves Filet Mignon is Free League.
As far as the Borg books go, this one is probably my least favorite so far. Not to say it's bad, as it's not. The Mork Borg system is fast and fun. However, if I'm going to go with horror/sci-fi, my choice is going to go with Death In Space. These Mork Borg books are always a visual treat, layout-wise, but Vast Grimm is easily the weakest, both in terms of readability and how interesting the layout is. The grimm are interesting, but since anyone or anything can be infected (and getting infected yourself can be devastating) it leads to lots of player paranoia where they don't want to interact with anything, or just kill everything on sight. I think Vast Grimm can be fun in the right hands or with the right player mindset, but if I'm going to take a Borg book out I'm going to reach for Cy_Borg or Pirate Borg.
"Swedish Death Metal"??? Hang on... I know a bit about this... But, those are just words that you just said. Is that Swedish Death Metal? Did I miss something? I'm Swedish... What really is Swedish Death Metal in your ear?
