I use the Mirage BD-35 VHF/UHF amplifier for my HTs. Added bonus during experimentation is that also works on 1.25MHz/23cm/33cm. Only issue was a cold solder Tx antenna connection within which I fixed. Saved purchasing the addition mobile radios, although already had them.

Thanks for your great content. In finland we do have two classes, basic and general class. The basic clas power limits on hf is 120w and over hf something like 20-30 wats, on general class the limits are 1500w on hf and 150w over hf, this is on fm modulation, I can't remember the limits on basic clas on ssb but on general class you are allowed to run up to 600w there is no difference in frequency ranges between classes.
With some exceptions I think it was on 70mhz where there is some different power limits and are actually erp. all other traditional bands are limited to transmitting power.
In finland we do have quite a few hig power repeaters that works well, almost any mobile rig has about 50w output on 2m and 20 to 30w on 70cm
Power is something that does help, but there is a rule of thumb that you should get in the neighborhood off 10db amplification to make it worth the trouble.
What it comes to singnal meters, the 6 db s unit is a very loosely followed standard, and are not even calibrated from the factory even on expensive rigs.
Example Japanese rigs like yaesu use 3db scale on singnal meter.
3db difference in singnal is really hard to hear with your ears. That's what amateurs are using 3db standard in filters and antenna patterns
Thank for your great videos and keep up the good work 👍 de OH2FHJ

Although the amplifier has an SSB button because it doesn't have a ptt line, two things happen, if you stop talking whilst keyed up the amp will drop you out, It doesn't operate on low power but you have found that one out, I have been thinking about getting one for ages but I'm seriously considering Microset which is twice as much moneywise! I have been using a pair of Motorola amps from the days of the MX radios in the mid eighties. They work great and I can get up to 60 watts with 3watts drive on VHF and up to 50 with 4 watts drive o the UHF unit. One of my favorites is the Motorola HT 1000 series radios. It has a car kit that allows one to set the HT into a holder and it has an external microphone, amplified speaker and the best part the controller ( which originally had an 800 MHz amp which I replaced with a UHF amp from a dead Radius mobile) can provide me with 65 watts out which is way to much for the amp. All I had to do is replace two surface mount resistors on the rf attenuator circuit on the input of the amp. Now its at 50 watts. Now if I only had one of the wide band JT1000 radios to use with this set up.
BTW, all of this is using USA radios in the USA.

Hi Andy , happy new year , with regards to antenna gain and ERP, because nowadays antenna manufacturers use dDi as it looks if it’s more gain for selling point of view , actual fact that antenna gain is dBD ie db respect to a dipole with us the reference, if an aerial is says it has 3dbi it’s not 3 db gain or x2 , it’s actually 3dBi - 2.15 = 0.85dBD gain at the antenna connector at base of the aerial. So ie if the antenna for example is 5dBi gain that is actually 3dBD gain and if 10w applied to that aerial base then the effective radiated power is 20w . I hope this helps . Great video and that icom handheld looks really great . 73s de Mark G8RDE

I’m into GMRs since my area has quite a few repeaters. Running a 45 watt radio with a beam I’m reaching repeaters 50 to 70 miles away. just for the heck of it bought a Chinese 80 watt amp off eBay which put out Around 65-70 watts and it didn’t make enough difference to warrant spending the money on.
I’m now a believer that the antenna is the key.
