- A beautiful day in gorgeous Syracuse, Sicily filmed on June 11, 2022. Enjoy this video as we explore ancient Ortygia.
We start at the at the entrance of Piazza del Duomo on the splendid island of Ortygia. View the splendid piazza and then walk down to the sea where we find a small beach and lounge areas to soak in the sun. We move along to see waterfront seafood restaurants and then we come to the beach. Walking along the seaside, we quickly come to the swimming platform and rocks which is a favorite place to enjoy the cool breeze and sunbathing in the Mediterranean sun. Moving along through the historic streets, Piazza Archimede comes into view surrounded by cafes and a beautiful water fountain. We conclude the tour with a walk through the main shopping street and end at the piazza del Duomo.

The Romans, engaged in the First Punic War, would not have brought war to Sicily if Messina had not spontaneously offered itself to the dominion of Rome.
Hieron at first sided with the Carthaginians but when Syracuse was threatened by the Romans (263) the far-sighted statesman asked for peace, obtained it and remained a faithful ally of Rome for half a century.
Upon his death, his nephew Geronimo changed alliances but Rome sent the consul Claudio Marcello who conquered the city, one district after another, after a terrible siege that lasted two years (214 BC), where he was killed, albeit by mistake. , the great Archimedes who had defended the city.
Stupendous must have been Syracuse, with the agora, the temples, the palaces, the walls, before the Roman conquest. Splendid for the flourishing of architecture and plastic arts, Syracuse also had a very intense cultural life. Suffice it to say that some of the most important thinkers of Greek antiquity gathered here: Stesicoro, Sappho, Simonie, Bacchilides, Pindaro, Aeschylus, Plato and many others.
It was the homeland of Epicarp, creator of the comedy, who in the great Greek theater touched moments of inimitable splendor with the works of Senarius, Philemon and Sofron, also Syracusans. Here were also the birthplace of the poet Theocritus, the philosopher Filolao, the historian Philistine and the physicist Archimedes.
As Cicero recalls, despite the moderation of Marcellus who scrupulously spared all the sacred and profane buildings of Syracuse to preserve the beauty of the city, many of the objects that adorned it were brought to Rome.
Gathered the whole island in a single province with two praetors, one in Syracuse and the other in Lilibeo, Sicily spent long years of tranquility. But the substitution of large pastures for small farms led to such impoverishment that exasperated farmers rebelled twice in the second century.
