Oliver, I have been enjoying all of your 2CV videos. So much so that today I bought a 2CV! I’m in the US where these cars are almost unheard of. She is a 1987 Club but due to government red tape she’s been registered as a 1971 (don’t ask). So a borrowed car, a rented dolly, drove 900 miles round trip (3°C when I got there) and a rain storm the last 200 miles, she’s home! I’m hoping my state will accept the paperwork from the state where she was stored. She acts like some bad gas and possibly bad spark plugs that I’ll have to look into. No rust at all! She looks new!
Thanks to your videos I have the confidence to tackle whatever she throws at me.
Happy New Car! My advice is replace the ignition system the modern repops are garbage so I suggest 123 electric ignition and a new dry resin coil because it's expensive but you'll never need to bother with it again.
You are spot on when you say there's never the right time for these things. But you can draw a grain of comfort from the fact it didn't happen when the Dyane was in a million pieces. :D
Your love of Jolene is there for all to see and it is brilliant how you always want to do a job properly and not cut corners. Hope she is back on the road soon. hope your Grandmother gets better soon and good to see Dad in this video. Best regards
You can do it!
Poor you, and poor Jolene!

I've had several cars that left me stranded various places, and it's a strange feeling.
In America, which is such a car centric country, having my car fail in traffic always makes me feel so ashamed, like I've done something wrong on purpose.
But there have always been kind other drivers to help push my various troubled cars to the curb.
And at least you have the time, money, energy, know-how, tools, and spare parts handy!
That's something. :)
Thank you for taking us along as you struggle, I guess it's not all fancy custom sports car in life, eh?
That cycling quote is so true!
Hope your Grandmother gets well soon. Also had a spark plug pop out like yours. Since it has six cylinders I was able to make it home. The main Corvair parts supplier sells a kit to put new threads in the spark plug hole. It worked well. I wish I could remove the Corvair's engine so easily as it needs a proper reseal. You need to raise the rear of the car quite high and lower the engine and transmission. Also you need to modify a motorcycle jack stand to do it.
Brilliant video. Love the mechanical walk throughs, always very interesting. Hope your grandma is ok.
sad to see Jolene in such a state. but I can tell you care enough to get her working again. I haven't posted a random train fact in a long time so why not now. a few weeks ago now the steam locomotive 60163 'tornado' visited the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for the annual steam gala. it was built in 2008 because none of the class a1 peppercorns were preserved. its a powerful express engine with 3 cylinders. at our railway, there is an incredibly steep incline from Grossmont to Gotland. the record is about 9 minutes from a standing start at Grossmont to stopping at Gotland. tornado did it in about 10. it was incredible to experience. hope your grandmother is doing ok. and if you need time of from UA-cam for any reason then we will understand.
After a battery acid leak you would be wise to soak every part with soda to neutralise the effects of the acid, the acid will have been drawn into any seam, and quietly corrode away inside, pressure wash, and neutralise. Good Luck!
A fascinating video. I’m glad you decided to give Jolene’s engine a “reet good fettle” as they say in Yorkshire. I do hope that your Grandmother gets better - family is everything.
Nice name, Jolene ! Mine (AZU 250) is called Valérie !
Firstly best wishes and speedy recovery for your Grandmother, will be watching with interest on the engine rebuild and general tidying of the bay.
It could be worse, it could be the middle of winter & freeing cold, at least the weather is still on your side and it will be a good job well done! Good luck with the work!
"...path of most resistance..." 🙂
I see that Burtons now do big bore kits for the "smaller" engines. If they fit yours are you considering fitting them if you are getting new barrels/pistons?
I'm surprised Briggs and Stratton didn't make adapter kits for these
Helicoil the head, make it better than original...but if you have a spare head okay. I would always fit new electrical parts, if available..or this could happen. With battery acid spillage, squirt everything with fairly liquid to neutralise....a whole bottle asap.
My 425cc ripple has jelly mould head covers as well, so the theory of smaller 2cv engines having the V type covers are incorrect. Has your 2cv got the centrifugal clutch?
The 'Right' time to fix her is now. However, the inconvenient time is always almost upon us. And each of these annoying 'inconveniences' helps grow character when we just keep-on. When you can shrug your shoulders, you have conquered impatience. And every 'inconvenience' thereafter is just an opportunity. I'm at that stage of life, where I am half-way between shrugging my shoulders and kicking the dog ... I did say it was a process ...
Small update on my 18 hp... Still doesn't charge... But now... Since 1.5 week left piston decided to stop moving... It had just 140. K s on it...... Can I blame Citroën for it??
So, basically the 2cv is getting a light restauration thing or a major service...
