  • The next installment of my favorite series of all time! Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The sequel to Tears of the Kingdom only on the Nintendo Switch~! Tears of the Kingdom crushes it, and I like it waaay more than Breath of the Wild. But a question people ask is " is Tears of the Kingdom just DLC" did it change enough from Breath of the Wild? I'm hear to answer! Enjoy my thoughts on the latest Zelda Nintendo Switch title, Tears of the Kingdom!
    "An epic adventure across the land and skies of Hyrule awaits in The Legend of Zelda™: Tears of the Kingdom for Nintendo Switch. The adventure is yours to create in a world fueled by your imagination.
    In this sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you’ll decide your own path through the sprawling landscapes of Hyrule and the mysterious islands floating in the vast skies above. Can you harness the power of Link’s new abilities to fight back against the malevolent forces that threaten the kingdom?"

    I loved how the story demonstrated Zelda's character growth from BOTW. She's easily my favorite version of the character. Also, the Sages grew a lot from the previous game as well.

    Loved TOTK! Felt the characters (main and npcs) really got more fleshed out and the side quests gave more of a sense of connection like Majora's Mask side quests.

    I love this game, it addresses some of the few complaints I had with BotW but I have a really bratty complaint. This is TOO MUCH GAME. Like, sometimes it feels overwhelming to the point of exhaustion. I needed to take breaks, jumping into sessions of Pikmin and We ❤ Katamari every so often.

      Another thing that people can try (and I've done this with Persona 3 and 4 before the fandom boomed) is journaling your progress.
      It worked for dungeon maps and character routes. No reason that can't apply here too.

    For those wanting to get the Dragon Tears in order: when you go to The Forgotten Temple as part of a quest, the friezes on the back walls are in story order. Just take a snapshot of each side, and one of the large geoglyph location map in the centre and then you don't have to worry about not getting them in order.
    I staggered collecting the tears whilst playing through the main quest. When I felt as though I made sufficient progress through the game, I went to the next scene as a treat for myself. 😊

    1:34, they don't tell you this (sadly imo), but in the Forgotten temple, there's both a map of Hyrule on the floor showing you the exact locations of the tears, but more importantly, there are murals on the wall showing you the correct order.
    However, NO ONE mentions this in text so it's extremely easy to miss on a first playthrough. It really is sad because they could at least show it to you and heavily suggest that you do them in the intended order!

    Thing I love is using Pro Mode for the UI. No map, no temp gauge, etc. Because of Link's animations, you really don't need any of the exploration UI, which was the same in BotW. 200+ hrs at the end of my playthrough.

    The first thing I did when I got out of the tutorial was find Impa and then get all the dragon tears (and out of order of course), so within a few hours I knew so many plot details that took so much longer for me to find in Breath of the Wild. It would have been nice if so much of the plot was hidden behind game progression as well. But I still a lot about how the story was presented.

    Yeah it's baffling they didn't make the glyphs unlock cutscenes progressively.
    I don't consider the temples "real dungeons" at all. Not only were they easy like you said, they are also very short. Traditional Zelda dungeons can take multiple hours. These are completed in like 15 minutes, maybe 30 at most if you take your time. I think it's a better ideas as I expected. I was truly hoping that, for the first time, Nintendo was putting a fully fleshed-out storyline front and center. The trailers definitely led many people to believe so. But it wasn't.
    They took no risks. Imagine if instead of flashbacks to Zelda, you actually played as her in the past, *playing* the storyline out with her instead of just watching cutscenes. That's the magnitude I expected out of a BOTW sequel. Besides this, there was something throughout the entire game that kept aggravating me. WHY IS THERE SO LITTLE DIALOG ABOUT THE PREVIOUS EVENTS??? Where did the giant fucking divine beasts go? Where did all the other sheikah stuff vanish to? Shouldn't the fact that calamity ganon was around the castle for so long still be causing a lot of concern that something else is happening with the castle? But everyone acts so clueless as if it's just a quirky incident and not something more sinister.
    On top of that, the whole sightings-of-Zelda thing was annoying. You find out the obvious truth way too early to then have to constantly deal with dumb NPCs wondering why Zelda is "acting different". It was just all handled very sloppily in my opinion. A final complaint that I'll keep short, exploration feels very unrewarding. Most rewards are garbage items. There should be a lot more unique weaponry with custom movesets. But this is held back by the overly-aggressive durability system.
    Side note, I was very disappointed they didn't have some of Age of Calamity's storyline matter in this game. I know it is a divergent-timeline story, but it would've been cool if the champions had retained some combat experience they learned from in that game.

    • @RicDreamlandAvalon
      @RicDreamlandAvalon 10 місяців тому

      Age of Calamity isn't canon.
      And about the dungeons being that short, I think it's because here are like the final part of a bigger quest, I mean, all the way to the wind temple or the water temple, they're some of my favorite parts of the game, there are even some optional bosses in these sections. So even though the big old construction at the end of the path with the region's "Big Boss" is named "temple", the actual quest starts much earlier and all together it has a structure closer to that of the usual temples in other Zelda games.

    Loved the game, as a Yakuza fan I don’t mind reusing assets if the game is fun, the physics, the openness of the world and ultrahand building were seriously impressive features (the ending is probably my favorite in the series too) but one thing that made me stop playing after ~90 hours was how boring the loot was, it’s all either consumable weapon parts or armor pieces I already owned in BotW (there are some new sets in there too) getting sticks and pebbles from treasure chests 90 hours in is hardly what I’d call exciting

    A very nice review. I loved some of the details you covered, like the reactive music and side quests that shows you really took your time with the game. Though, if I may, the shrines in this game I found far weaker than the original, frustratingly so.
    The intended way to beat them is usually very cool, but almost every single one can be easily circumvented, usually with just ultrahand and rewind. I think I did about... 20% of the shrines the intended fashion and cheesed the rest because the game made it way too easy and efficient to do so. Multiple solutions and open-ended puzzles are a staple of open world Zelda, but this took it too far, in my opinion, and had me missing the puzzles of traditional 3D Zelda more than anything.

    Just started this yesterday after not getting very far with BOTW. For me, the storytelling is irrelevant and uninteresting like before, but after a couple of hours playing this, I just want to play all day. Unfortunately, I’m an adult with a full time job… which is why I normally opt for more linear experiences that can be completed within 10-15 hours.

    While I think BOTW was the more interesting and mindblowing game because it was so new at the time, TOTK is superiour. Having three ENTIRE overworlds made the world feel so much more interesting and essentially meant there was three times as much to find in TOTK. You could easily write off TOTK reusing the same overworld as lazy, but it felt changed to the point that I genuinely liked revisiting so many old areas because they felt new. The underground and sky were fun to explore too and gave this game so much more variation. The story is not mind blowing by any means but it does it's job well. The dungeons are a major step up. I personally never liked the Divine Beasts because they felt like mini dungeons at best. I also like the shrines even more in this game. I liked them in BOTW, but this game makes them even better with the new abilities. My only major issue is that there are too many blessing shrines. Like 1/3 of them feel like freebie shrines which I found kind of annoying. But overall it is debatably the best game the Switch has seen

    When it comes to the timeline I believe Nintendo should have placed BotW and TotK in a separate alternate timeline instead of thinking placing BotW 10,000 years after the previous games would solve everything. Because the lore of TotK contradicts the lore of SS being the beginning of the Link/Zelda/Ganon story, and why are there references to the adult timeline where Hyrule is beneath the Great and flooded for good in tWW? PH and and ST takes place on the way to and in New Hyrule thousands of nautical miles away, and neither Ganon or the Master Sword appear in those games since they are still att the bottom of the ocean.
    Also, I believe Nintendo should have given Queen Sonia round ears making the connection that the people of Hyrule are decendants of human and Zonai stronger.

    Honestly I know a lot of people will disagree with me but I actually had a great time in this game’s dungeons. And yes they are “real dungeons” as so many people like to say they aren’t. I’ve played Zelda all my life and I love traditional style dungeons just as much as everyone else. My favorite dungeons in the Zelda series come from twilight princess. But traditional style doesn’t mean it’s always a good dungeon. I think people who have a lot of nostalgic attachment to Oot seem to forget this. Imo the both water temples in Oot suck and the first 3 dungeons in Majora’s mask aren’t good either. And most of Wind waker’s temples are forgettable imo. And yes while I do see where people are coming from when they say that the new temples are repetitive, let’s not forget that literally every Zelda dungeon ever follows the same format. Enter a room, get a key, get an item, fight a boss. I’m not saying it’s bad design at all but you can apply the repetitive argument to traditional dungeons too. Imo the build up to the temples is the best it’s ever been in totk and the bosses are among the best in the series. I’m not saying totk temples are perfect but I am saying it’s a very bad argument to say that they’re poorly designed or “not real” dungeons just because they are different then the Oot format that the series used for almost 20 years. Imo they are a fun, fresh take that combines traditional elements with divine beasts that results in a super fun and memorable experience. Bottom line, I love both style of dungeons lol

      The dungeons don't reach the same highs as some other games in the franchise, but they are miles better that Breath of the Wild's imo and I really enjoyed them quite a bit. My main complaint is that they felt a bit too short, other than that I loved the themes and the puzzles leading up to the dungeons. The bosses were pretty great too!

    I think the fact that so many people feel the need to defend that it’s “not dlc” makes it all the more obvious that it is. Reused assets, reused maps, reused music etc…it’s dlc. It’s just very flavorful dlc because they took such a long time, and added so much. Some New characters, expanding upon the story, some new gameplay mechanics…that’s what a DLC does. A true sequel typically does more to differentiate itself. I realize that I seem like a punk for being negative and expressing this opinion on your channel. It’s not gonna change anyone’s mind, I know. But I just mean to say that I usually agree with your perspective 9 times out of 10, but this time I disagree.
    I personally wished that the sequel had some more major changes. I’m so sick of open world filler content. I don’t want extreme linearity, but a lot of the content in this game (and in botw) just felt superfluous. You could skip basically all of it, watch the lore on UA-cam, and speed run both games in like 2-3 hours if you really wanted to. Just not my cup of tea. Twilight princess was the sweet spot for me…smaller zones, focused storyline…dungeons/tools/gameplay that evolved as you progressed. I miss that style of zelda

    • @EtienneTC
      @EtienneTC 11 місяців тому +2

      @@blossom357 yeah…it worries me that the success of TOTK is going to send a resounding message to other AAA developers that they needn’t change too much when they’re ready to churn out the next game in a franchise. If people liked it well enough, just add some new content and call it a sequel. I know that people think it’s offensive to call TOTK dlc, because they think it detracts from the effort put into making the game, but I would argue that reusing a ton of assets is a net negative. Innovating and coming up with new worlds and concepts and designs is so much more enticing. Not to mention that the game really has no boundaries... “Oh, you can just cheat/skip most of the puzzles, and players are fine with that? Cool…let’s not worry so much about challenge anymore”. Maybe it’s a bit of an exaggeration, considering that freedom is common in open world games, and Totk just kind of expands upon that…but I personally don’t like it

    • @PelvicGaming
      @PelvicGaming  11 місяців тому +5

      Listen, disagreements are always welcome. But no, I don't think it's DLC. I think it did add enough to be a whole different game, and in another comment someone suggested if this is dlc so is pokemon, same thing, just new pokemon. And I can't dock a game for reusing assets, my favorite game of all time - Majora's Mask- is just that with obviously added content. Now on some front I agree, I too am tired of open world. It's just so big, and as an adult it's like ugh. BUT, I did enjoy this open world game.
      I mean if you choose to speed run the game which is a fine way to play, but why would you? It's fun figuring out puzzles, getting creative with building, meeting characters, and exploring. I mean Zelda since the beginning hasn't been a story heavy game, which by all means I'd love more of. But that's par the course. That said, rest assured I'd LOVE some Oot-like game. The early 2000s classic Zelda. But I appreciate that in this game they did make real dungeon, and replaced items with essentially a party member skills.

      @@PelvicGaming You have to go all the way back to 1987 to see another Zelda with as little story as the Switch games. Just because Nintendo knew how to be tactful with their storytelling, unlike Kojima to use an easy example, doesn't mean there wasn't story.

      @@PelvicGaming I actually don’t like to speed run games, but after I finished Totk I kind of wished I had. I guess I’m just in a place in my life where I prefer games that respect my time a bit more, instead of sandbox games where there’s a whole lot to do, but most of it doesn’t really tickle my fancy. When I play a game like this I feel like I’m sifting through a river, looking for gold, and never really finding it. The charm factor wore off pretty quickly, and I just felt like I was playing botw again. I honestly think they made the gameplay/puzzles so abusable because they knew that they were recycling a lot of content from the first game, and that people would experience fatigue so much faster (so they gave us the ability to just circumvent puzzles by adding what feels like things that the modding community would’ve implemented…or mechanics that are reminiscent of what the speed running community did in botw) …but anyway, I digress. I appreciate the thoughtful response though. I think the series just isn’t for me anymore (at least if they continue the open world design philosophy)…I’ve been moving further and further away from open world games. Elden ring was the first and last one that I truly loved
      Side note… I actually dislike Pokémon because most of it feels like dlc to me, but yeah…not fair of me to go that deep into it, because I stopped playing that franchise a while ago

      This comment is confusing, because you say you didn't have an issue with any complaints that you listed, but then say the game is mind numbing?
      But at any rate they DID address pretty much everything you listed.
      For weapon durability, in BoTW, you often didn't want to use your strong weapons because you could only hold so many, and you didn't want to farm them or leave an area to find more when they broke. In TotK, with the weapon fusion, as long as you have access to a basic stick or sword, you can fuse that with materials in your inventory to make a super powerful weapon anywhere in the game.
      For climbing during rain there are potions you can drink or an outfit you can wear. It was quite literally addressed.
      Not sure what the complaint of Korok Seeds were, but if doing random things in the world was tedious, there is a new type in TotK where all you have to do is transport one dude to another by using the build mechanic. It's a fun way to use the new build mechanic and try out different types of transportation while rewarding you with Korok Seeds with pretty low effort.
      If I am not mistaken, every enemy type from BotW returns in TotK and then they added a bunch more, so they quite literally addressed this by adding new ones.

  • @Uhcip
    @Uhcip 11 місяців тому

    autobuild requires so much zoanite if you make anything complex that I stopped using it for anything outside of basic vehicles. Made something complex and stepped too far away and it despawned entirely :S
    Found armour mostly pointless by the end and were kinda tedious to level. The Depths was initially the best part, but ultimately the most disappointing. A lot of it is just the same enemies as the overworld and it all kinda looks similar.
    The dungeons were also kind of disappointing. Having a unique theme is nice, but they don't have unique enemies, they're very short, and they now no longer have the mechanic where you can move pieces of it from your map like the Divine Beasts. (they were doing the music for progression thing already in those too).
    The allies teaming up with you is an interesting idea but mechanically just extremely janky. They need to patch in some kind of skill wheel instead of running up to them.
    The worst part was having a "biggoron sword" and its just a basic model/skin for one of the weapon types that carried directly over from BOTW (which im already kinda over seeing).
    Still like it more than BOTW.
