BD TAP SHIFTER 6.0 POWERSTROKE-LOCK UP SWITCH!

- This video is in preparation for a up coming truck pull event. In the last truck pull event we were in 3rd gear 4 low and maxed out our available rpms and had no way to lock up the torque converter. Although the 6.0 powerstroke dually took all the power, speed is the name of the game. Using this bd tap shifter, we can now start in any gear we choose and have torque converter lock up in all the gears. Huge game changer and should make a big difference for truck pulling. Not to mention it has variable vane braking as well which is INSANE when slowing down. Awesome install and very excited to test it at the pulls!

Thanks for more info than BD offers on the operation of their own product! Good luck at the tractor pulls 👍Love the videos!
Thanks for the details. I have been super interested in these shifters for awhile but was on the fence as some reviews have said it was a bit glitchy.
I move a fair bit of farm equipment and that is usually at 45 mph. The computer won't let it lock the torque converter until it's in top gear at 60+ usually, so it's rolling at like 2100+ rpm's at 40-45 mph and it absolutely guzzles the fuel at that speed towing an equipment carrier. Makes me want a zf-6 swap during those times but the tap shifter in 3rd or 4th locked should be the ticket to fix that.
Good luck 👍👍
I,would definitely give BD a call if you have any tuning already in your truck. Save some money and give them a call and discuss this prior to your purchase.
At least you get fourth gear! Without tap shifter it will only go in fourth in super cold weather so i hear
i wish they would sell just the shifter that could work with the factory wiring. i'm not interested in the tap shift/exhaust brake, but i'd love to change out the 99-07 style shifter arm with the 08+ style
thats crazy to think you just had your 5r110 shift into 1st and 4th gear. and it wasn't artic conditions. in my truck i've experienced those gears probably 2 times.
I have one in my 04 but I have a first gen Cummins. I have the sct programmer also. When you re in tap shifter mode it overrides any other program. I believe the first time you took off out of manual mode you were not in the tap shifter program .
My TS works great and so does the SCT program. The only problem I have is it acts up sometimes in 4th with the TS in 4. The trans "slams " for lack of a better term . I don't know what it is actually doing.
Anyway, thanks for posting the video.
My hang up with the Tap Shifter is that it interrupts other OBD devices…
Thanks for the content I think I’ll pick up one of these kits
Also you are good to get the Oct. p ron
Had issues with it but I think it is good now.
I don't have to come to a complete stop to go back to auto shift. Just run the selector up past 5 and the TS turns off or run it up to any gear and it will auto shift up to that selected gear.
If you’re in 5th on the shifter and you press + one more time it turns the system off. I have a tuned tcm and I can run it in mode 1. If you click it all the way up to 5th right away it will shift like an auto mode 1 just limits the highest gear it will shift to so by putting it in 5 it will shift like normal
I was hoping someone might chime in. I did discover that in 5th I can hit the + and deactivate manual mode.
So you are saying in setting 1, go to “drive”, hit the minus button, quickly tap it all the way to 5th, take off and it will shift normal? What about during de-accel, do you then have to manual down shift?
Thanks for the details. I am sure a guy would get used to the operation after awhile, good to know. Probably should include a laminated info card for all those settings to tape on the dash 😂
I,don't think that it work correctly with a tuned truck. And the instructions are not very clear.
I'm still trying to figure it all out,and I've had one in my 2005 6.0 dually. I, have issues with my tow/haul light will start flashing and I, have to pull over and restart the truck. I,had the Tapshifter Installed when I was having a BD Transmission installed and the transmission was delivered to the installer with the wrong tail housing, so they told him to check the original one out and if ok to just use it and they would warranty it. And then when installing the Tapshifter the installer called and asked if my truck was tuned and said not that I'm aware of other than a BD Boost fooler. But I do like being able to drive in 4th and to use the Turbo back pressure for driving in the hills/ Grades here in Arizona. I,hope that you can get some technical support from BD And get it working for you.
@@LeftLaneDiesels I believe it shifted like normal most recently I had tow haul on in mode 1 and it was down shifting
@@LeftLaneDiesels so, I have had this in my truck for three years now and love it. And I run mostly in program 3 and 7. It took me a while to get used to it, I’ll try my best to explain it….the easiest way to understand this thing is to understand the green LED NR 5 is your new “Drive”. If your truck is in drive and you don’t have any numbers lit up on your tap shifter gear indicator it’s turned off, it’s not doing anything and won’t do anything, your TCM is doing all the work.
Now if you have any of the gear lights on (1-5) the tap shifter module is on and talking to the TCM. If you set it at 5 when stopped(or driving), that is when you will see your % change in your shift points, within each mode. When at a stop with 5 illuminated and you step on it and let the truck and tap shifter module do it’s thing. You will see what I’m talking about, It’s more noticeable when doing this while in tow haul. And with exhaust brake on (I have a bypass switch on mine as well) when you are, let’s say doing 70mph same as before you have 5 light up and let off the fuel your vanes will shut on the turbo and begin engine braking. If you are not in Tow haul you will need to down shift to maintain hold back with the turbo. If in tow haul the BD module will follow Fords TCM settings (or your tune) and down shift the truck as the truck approaches the downshift points automatically no need to touch the shifter. And again you will notice your % change in each program setting doing this. In all modes except mode 6 mode 6 is useless in my eyes 🤷♂️ not sure why they even made that mode an option. Anyway hope this helps, mode 7 is fun I will use it on the highway just cruising and notice a big difference in engine running cooler and better fuel mileage.
I have custom tunes from warren for a stage 2 sam wyse transmission, would this mess up my trans being I have tunes for the shifting? I have a sct x4, would I be able to still see the display on the screen being the shifter is connected to the obd2 port ?
It won’t mess with the trans unless you have it in manual mode. The display will still work even though it’s jumped through the bd port. 💪
Hey bro, I recently found out my truck has a "hot tune" from the previous owner. My turbo is constantly screaming and my idle is up and down when in park. Would you recommend getting it reflashed?
I’m running a non vgt turbo, can I order without the exhaust brake ?
The 5r110 is a 6 speed. Not a 5 speed. So I don't understand how it can work properly in manual mode
Seems like a headache with all the different modes and figuring it all out…the idea is cool but I think most people will burn their transmissions by the time they figure it out lol. Just my opinion. Nonetheless appreciate the content!
I have mine set on mode 2 and leave it there. When I take off I put it in 5. It shifts great with the Cummins . Not really complicated at all.
Can I use this on my 06 250 jus to swap out my stock one and use it regularly?
Why not didnt you hook up the exhaust brake bypass to the auxillary toggle switch?
He doesn't have the aux switches. Not all trucks came with them.
How delayed is the manual mode?
Was thinking about doing that mod , but not sure with my truck being street/show truck, also would like to do burnouts at shows, what do you think?
Definitely should make burnouts at shows go better, just keep it locked into a gear and do burnouts for days
@@LeftLaneDiesels Thank you, waiting on more on your race truck!
Quick question for you on the coil spring axle swap. I am doing the same thing on my 04 Excursion and I have it all done but I was wondering if you need to swap the brake Master Cylinder from the 05+ truck as well. The caliper pistons are bigger all the way around so to have the same pedal firmness and travel one would think you need to swap to the larger master as well. Did you find this necessary or does the 03-04 seem to be ok?
I did the 05+ axle swap on my early 04, and retained the factory master cylinder. So far I have no complaints, and I had 13k behind the truck last weekend. No lack of braking power in my mind, and the pedal feels great.
No more white truck?
Which one? Both the daily and race truck are still here
@@LeftLaneDiesels Oh yeah forgot about the race truck. But yeah I was talking about the daily. Good looking truck
@@johnnycortez46 thank you!
Go getum
How much boost does this rig make?
It’ll max out the factory MAP sensor so over 33.9psi 😬
@@LeftLaneDiesels nice man! Which turbo?
@@Bacongrease00 just a stock 03
In my opinion, this thing just isnt very user friendly, I think it could have been designed better for usability, it has nice manual transmission control but you cant make the most of it because you spend too much time fiddling with buttons.
Waste of money for me! I have it on my 06 and it completely messed with the tuning on mine! It works fine on a stock tune but anything over 40hp the transmission doesn't shift right. I have SCT with canned tunes and I also have the badass PPE with canned tunes and neither one can run over 40hp. My truck shifted just fine on highest tune on both programmers until I had this installed "by a certified powerstroke TECH" I wouldn't recommend it at all!
They will not work with a truck that is tuned prior to installation it Must be in a stock configuration. It really should be specified to anyone looking to add this.
