    Excellent instructive video with tips to make the process easy and to keep out of trouble. Even with all screws removed, however, the tight-fitting case was a bit tricky to get apart the first time around.Yes, because of this video, l have been called on to repair more than one. Wish all instructional videos could be this detailed and easy to use. FIVE STARS !!!

    Tim,
    Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your step-by-step video was easy to follow and the close-up shots of the components was very helpful. The fact that you included info. on modifying the bracket that covers the power jack definitely saved me some grief :) Without ever having disassembled my laptop before, I was able to successfully replace the jack without any issues. I truly appreciate your help :)
    Thanks again & have a lovely day,
    Kristin :)

    Thanks for this video Tim. I've been meaning to refurb an old laptop for a while, the main problem being that the charging port broke. I've become a lot more confident in my CPU hardware maintenance in the last year or so, and will gladly attempt to fix this problem myself now, thanks to your excellent tutorial.

    Thanks Tim - excellent break down. I've got a Sony PCG - 8158P which appears to have been dropped and caught by the power supply cord before the laptop hit the floor. As such, the aluminium or cast muck metal frame holding the power jack has snapped off leaving the power jack to float around in the side of the laptop. Do you know if it is possible to get replacements for the mounting frame for the power jack?

    If you are going to take on a power jack repair for the first time I would say this model would be the perfect one to start with. No soldering involved. Just follow my video step by step and you should be fine. Just make sure you order the jack after the broken one is out. That way you can match it up with the one you order online. Good Luck

    Excellent video, thanks to this I've added a year or two more to my vaio, especially relevant now that Sony has pulled out of the laptop market. Gave it a good cleanout too. The only thing I did differently was I didn't see the need to remove the keyboard, but apart from that thanks a ton!

    Im repairing a broken laptop for a friend, and that bracket you had to modify (as well as the original connector you screwed into it) is missing entirely. I ordered a replacement power port (missing cable included), but can I just leave that bracket out completely?

    I would first confirm that your power adapter itself is working. Use a mutimeter to confirm or try a known good power adapter. I would also remove the battery and try powering on with only the power adapter plugged in. Good luck. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Tim, your guide was most helpful to me when fixing my dc jack. The steps were different for dis-assembly because I have a different model (PCG-61A11L), but was more or less the same. I installed the new jack but now for some reason my VAIO won't turn on? It shows the charging light is on when I plug it in, but I only get a response from the laptop when I take my battery out and put it back in. The screen and other lights turn on and turn right back off in about 5 secs. Any suggestions?

    I'm glad that I have seen this. I haven't been able to use my laptop for a year because of this issue. I have asked several people who are more computer smart that I am, and who have experience fixing computers about this problem and both said that I would have to replace the motherboard. So, being short on money I haven't considered doing that until now, but after seeing this I realize it is not a motherboard problem. At one point, or with other laptops, was replacing the motherboard the correct solution?

  • @jeffreykamis8507
    @jeffreykamis8507 9 років тому

    Thanks for the video. You mention using a voltmeter to check for shorts, how would you do that on this model. Thanks.
    (Reason I ask is that I put mine back together and now there's no power whatsoever, so hoping there's a short somewhere).

    • @TimsComputerRepair
      @TimsComputerRepair  9 років тому

      ***** You can test for voltage where the jack is plugged into the board. I would test on the pin side under the board where the jack is plugged into. You do this of course while the power cord is plugged in being careful not to cross + and - . You should be reading 19v

    Thank you, this helped me fix one of my two problems. My laptop works now, when plugged in. Unfortunately, it is unable to "detect" any battery(new or old) that I put in it. It only stays on as long as it's plugged in. At this point, I'm almost certain that there's something wrong with the area where the battery connects to the board. Is this fixable? I would appreciate a little help in determining my options. I have a vaio, the same one in this video. Thank you again.

      Paul Englander Depends on the model. If all of the screws are out from the bottom I have seen where there may be a screw under the keyboard that is securing the back panel. Try removing the keyboard first but remember. NEVER FORCE ANYTHING!

    Hello,
    i made the replacement like in youre video. I have a strong "whining" (like cpu whining) from the replaced dc Jack when the laptop is idling. Its definitly from the DC Jack, because when i trun the cable it changes the noise and i hear it really clearly and i get crazy from it. do you have the same? the original one was quiet.

    I have this exact model laptop. Unfortunately, I've had had my power jack replaced twice by an authorized Sony technician. The thing is, I've had nothing but issues with my Mobo and GPU since the repairs. Sony says they can't help since I'm now out of warranty. My question is what exactly would/could happen if the metal bracket were to ground out the jack?

  • @PetitChaton310

    Hi Tim. I'm was wondering... I need to repair (or have repaired) my power jack and this makes it look pretty simple. I'm not really a computer whiz or anything and am wondering, would it be crazy to do this myself having very little experience? I don't want to ruin an expensive laptop. Also, if its not too hard, are there any additional tips you have for a novice?

  • @rower2169

    Great video! Question: Is there any reason at 10:10 you didn't add some electrical tape or some other non-conductive material between your modified bracket and the metal lead for extra safety? Would it cause a heat problem? is it just not necessary?

    • @TimsComputerRepair
      @TimsComputerRepair  8 років тому

      That bracket was not coming in contact with any connection on that jack. It basically sits on top of the plastic housing of the jack for support.

    • @TimsComputerRepair

      maynardjesus You could try just not grounding the power jack cable. That is there for extra grounding protection however it is not necessary. Of course if you could find a way to get that cable grounded it would be a better way to go.

    Hello my friend, first congrats by the video, helpful for users with difficulties. I have two problems with my Sony VAIO VPC-F136FM, the first one I solved with your video, the second I hope you can help me, the problem: My laptop doesn't recognize the battery (is not the battery, I tested another one), in Windows (8.1) said that the battery is connected, but the charger not, if I remove the charger the laptop is turned off. If I unplugged the battery Windows says that the battery isn't connected, just the charger. Some app recognize the battery normally, but when I remove the charger turn off. What can be the problem? I appreciate your help.

      I have the same model laptop as you, i know exactly what it is. The issue relates to 2 drivers: the Sony Notebook Utilities and the Sony Shared Library, the order by which they are installed is CRUCIAL, the Sony Shared Library NEEDS to be installed first, then the Sony Notebook Utilities. The problem you are having is because windows 8 probably installed them out of order.
      Another big problem too is that the Sony Shared Library is "notebook specific" you HAVE to use the one specific for your laptop, if you download any other Sony Shared Library it will not indicate to you that is not for your laptop model. Even if you uninstall the shared library and the notebook utilities it is not going to work even if you clean the registry, your only fix is to format the hard drive and reinstall windows.
      Also because of the Sony Shared Library driver that is needed to be installed, Windows 8.1 will never work properly on the VPCF-136fm, i tried to get it to work... you can manually exclude the Shared Library and the Notebook Utilities drivers but then your laptop will not work properly in windows 8.1.
      Your battery is fine, is all a drivers issue

    I've got a machine with the same issue (I can see the two pins where the AC Adapter gets plugged in, so I guess the plastic barrel part has been lost) but I don't have the AC adapter itself - anyone know which model adapter to buy? The machine's a VPCF130D, PCG-81214L. 19.5V input. The power jack that gets installed inside the laptop seems to be readily available on Amazon, Ebay, etc.

      answered my own question regarding the power supply. A friend has the same laptop, working, and has the power supply. I had a look and it has these numbers on it: pa-1900-12SY, and vgp-AC19V35, Input: 100-240V~1.5A, 50/60Hz, Output: 19.5V 4.7A, I've read that it's a 4.4mm barrel for the connector. I assume it doesn't have to be a Sony original - any power supply with the same output voltage and amps and the same size barrel connector should work. For my own case I'm going to need to buy both a new power supply and the new power jack part Tim describes in his video.

    I disconnected the cmos battery and I was able to boot to a point because my hard drive was in. I get a message stating no operating system found. If I connect the cmos battery I can boot one more time but after that no more until I disconnect the cmos battery again then connect or leave disconnected.
    What I did next was connect the laptop battery, connect the cmos battery and then and only then I was able
    to boot multiple times. I put it all back together and its been working. I can't figure out why just adding the laptop battery along with the power supply made the difference?

    ..hmm.. I purchased Vaio VGN FW 448J/B while ago as a back up tool.
    The power jack was busted already. At first i gave it to the pro in town to deal with it . They were able only to try to secure it in place with silicon . Waste of money. And they refuse to do by my recommended solution . So at the end I have to do it by my self. I could not get the proper parts except to buy the whole casing . So i decided to run "extension" cable out of the PC and let it hangs down - it doesn't look very nice but it works 100%
