The reason Watson/Mansell/Alboreto etc were not disqualified despite running the same set up as Rosberg and Piquet? Nobody protested about them, Renault ONLY protested the two cars in front of them, and not anyone else, so the FIA only investigated the Williams and Brabham, thus they were the only ones disqualified.
I love the little tricks teams pulled off during this period. The Brabham suspension trick from 1981 was genius, legal when stationary, illegal while moving.
If you really want a motor racing figure who's rubbed the boundaries of a rule book dozens of times in NASCAR and somehow got away with it, I would suggest a retrospective on Junior Johnson, I heard his conniving but ingenious nature involved connections with F1 mechanics. He's basically regarded to NASCAR what Colin Chapman is to Formula One, the single greatest innovator in the entire sport (except for saying Colin wasn't a moonshine runner of the 1930s and 40s).
I think some day you might be doing the story of July 12, 2022 in IndyCar, when Ganassi racing announced that they were picking up the 2023 option for 2021 Champion Alex Palou and then later THE SAME DAY, Alex announced that, nope, incorrect, I am moving to McLaren.
Thanks Aidan, I didn't realise so many teams used the water cooling idea. Please stay cooled & hydrated this week. 38° is fine for Australia, but it could kill you guys. Try it out way & ice some beer. It'll help.
Two things, the Alfa V12 WAS developed for ground effect cars, Murray asked them to build it for the 1979 season. It's problem was it was to big, heavy, thirsty and unreliable. And they did eventually drop it for their 1.5 l V8 turbo.
I'm also enjoying these "little stories within a bigger story" videos - I'm usually familiar with the bigger story but don't know many of the details, so it's really interesting to have those filled in.
the good old times when cheating was easy. Water with lead shot, Tyrrell with two types of rear wings, one aluminium (or was it fiberglass) for racing and one steel for weighing :)
Classic example of "play stupid games, win stupid prizes" :-) For anyone who loves those kind of "unfair advantages" I recommend the book "The Unfair Advantage" by the late Mark Donohue.
If you ever do Prost and Senna in 89 and 90, can look at Balestre supposedly admitting his bias for Prost? The only sources for these seem to be clippings/scans of Brazilian newspapers supposedly quoting from L'Equipe.
"Thats how we say it in proper english" kind of like how you guys say "weekend" like it is 2 seperate words? Even though it isnt even literally a week end, but also a week start?
ua-cam.com/video/gzlpBIshD6o/v-deo.html Didn't Brundle (I think, could be wrong), have a story about also seeing a seat that took four men to lift into the car before weighing?
@@stephenbritton9297 the problem was proving that those tanks had the primary purpose of cooling the brakes, like how Brabham was able to prove the fan was for engine cooling more than downforce.

Yes that peaked my interest too :)
I've heard that everyone in F1 bricked it when Charlie got the gig with the FIA. The poacher was now the game keeper. He knew ALL the tricks.
It's like if Smokey Yunick had become a head of NASCAR's tech department

And not just Charlie Whiting - Herbie Blash as well....hence Charlie's unofficial rule 0.0 "Thou shalt not take the piss"

can you do a video on the late Charlie Whiting?

Thank you for the content, awesome as always Aidan!
I like how he insists on the proper way to say "controversy" and then says to give the video "an like". That's amusing.

Ah yes, the Air Bud rule: If it's not explicitly forbidden, then it's ok!
“There’s nothing in the rule book that says a monkey can’t drive a Formula 1 car!”
Dodgy French shenanigans are not beyond plausable. Just look at the minis Nd firds disqualified at the 1966 monte carlo rally to get a French winner.
Keep it up Aidan. Love this stuff!
Great video as usual Aidan! Thank You!
Awesome stuff mate, really enjoying it👍
Brazil's favourite frenchman: Jean-Marie Balestre 😅🤣👍

To get a win in race, bending the rules without arising suspicion is the only way.

How did they found out in the 1982 Brazilian GP?
