    Respect is earned, I will never appreciate strangers just because I am allowed to exist in their presence. If I want to work out in a powerlifting or strongman gym then I will pay a monthly fee and go about my business. If the members expect me to be submissive and social then they ought to be so kind as to fuck off. I will of course approach other people with kindness should they desire my attention but that's about it.

    I can relate to the late training partner dilemma. I had a mate i trained with for about a year and he was constantly late or a no show. I was serious about training and this dude was a super nice guy but always had excuses. He never figured out how disrespectful it was and couldn't understand my psychotic sessions with him when he did show up.
    I was punishing him within the law.

      We (well, I) live in a world where this has been devalued. The dishonest and disrespectful accumulate the power to be publicly dishonest and disrespectful and poorly-behaved and prosper all the while. And we see someone who gets to be an asshole on tv and the simplest among us make the association between dishonesty, disrespect, and bad behavior, and they make the association with prosperity. They/we look at their/our own lives and feel our insecurity of situation (better not get sick, that shit's expensive) and think, "if only I could be an asshole on tv."
      No one knows how to be ok in group settings. We dread "now go around the room and tell us who you are and a little about yourself," sessions. They fear to ask for help when they need it, and are suspicious of help when they receive it because they/we fear exposing any weakness, lest it be taken advantage of.
      It's crap. The whole point of civilization is that we all do better when we function as a community.

    This got weird fast. If I'm "late" that's disrespectful? Why do I have to work out at a specific time? Other people can "slam" weights but I have to treat it like glass? I want to find myself a powerlifting gym but I don't want one with a bunch of arbitrary & nonsensical rules. Love your content Bryan but I don't think I want to work out at your gym. LOL. I agree. I have considered evolving beyond my home gym, but not to join a crew or club of powerlifters who have "pack" rules, or a "box" of crossfitters. I want to try the diversity of equipment. And sure as shit I am not treating a barbell loaded with plates like "glass."

    • @halfsterker
      @halfsterker 5 років тому +3

      If you have a specific class time, when you're late of course it's disrespectful. Brian's points are in tune with a team atmosphere, not just a "powerlifting/strongman" gym where in reality its just a commercial gym with better bars and more implements. Same thing if you're on a football team and practice is at 1pm but you show up at 1:30pm... no one wants to wait for you to get warmed up and waste their time when they're ready to start playing.
      As for the glass comment... I think you're taking that a bit too literal. Is it okay to let a deadlift down quickly but controlled? Of course! Is it okay to slam a deadlift back to the ground after hitting a rep max? Maybe not on the first date...

    • @joneastling3336
      @joneastling3336 5 років тому +2

      joeyhoser sooooo if you have a crew of men getting to the gym at 6 am to lift. And u get there 30 minutes late and expect to be part of that group still... not gonna happen my man. And if you are visiting the first time. Respect the damn equipment. You don’t own it. Later you can drop stuff slam stuff sure. But the first time is not the “come in look super alpha smash my head against the wall” moment. It’s shut the hell up and learn. Be respectful. But I’m just trying to be the best lifter I can be. I took some deadlift setup advice from a guy pulling 150lbs more then me. And the next week walked in and hit a 10lb PR. It makes a difference. I for one agree with Brian. But go ahead and take these rules the wrong way and get butt hurt. That’s ok.

    • @joeyhoser
      @joeyhoser 5 років тому +2

      @@joneastling3336 I'm not looking to disrespect anyone or smash anyone's equipment. I'm just interested in lifting and getting stronger, and I'm not into the whole team/frat group mentality who are going to be offended if I don't behave a certain way. Nothing wrong with that if it works for them, which it obviously does very well, but it's not my bag.

    I wish more people would follow these common sense rules. Is it really that hard not to be a turd in the punchbowl? Theres a jackwagon at my gym who never puts weights away, leaves whatever he uses however it was when he decided he was done with it. 2-3 sets of dumbbells on the floor, plates on bars, or left leaning against racks. Somehow we always end up at the gym around the same time. It's super annoying, and it wastes everyone else's time, not to mention shows a complete lack of respect for the gym, equipment, and other members.

  • @Akajeyjey

    I can see and appreciate a good intent.. It seems very strict but I can see how it may be helpful..
    I think that some people throughout the life often find themselves in an enviroment where they are required to behave in a similar way while being treated with contempt and disrespect at the same time. Basically they learn that rules and discipline is a form of bullying. I don't believe that is the case in your gym because it seems like a nice place, with nice people. Unfortunately for those people mentioned above, the association with bad treatment is so strong that it would be very hard to convince them that they could like being at a place like that.
    I realize It's not pleasant to read something like "I don't want to go to your gym." "I'd rather workout alone than this." but please don't take it personally. It's just their past experience, it has most likely nothing to do with you. They're not trying to offend you.

    Ugh, no matter how I tried I couldn’t get off work and I’m gonna be late for my first powerlifting class this Sunday. The shame makes me think maybe it would be too disrespectful and maybe I shouldn’t go at all. I absolutely let them know so at least they won’t be waiting for me, I guess.

    Good video!!! Great message!! It is true pretty much all of the fundamentals in life you learn in kindergarten. I don’t know why so many people in this world have forgotten that. Treat others how you wanna be treated, share, be nice to the new “student.” Be the better person no matter what.

    Brian's experience and knowledge on strength and conditioning is immense. But this channel doesn't care so much about growing physically larger or stronger, but about growing your heart and soul. And that is what keeps me coming back every time I see the notification. Thanks for all the work you've done Brian, have a blessed new year.

    Wow I’m kind of amazed at the responses. Some of them seem to miss the part about this being a place you want to belong to because it will help you reach your goals. If there is a group that can help you why wouldn’t you adhere to THEIR structure, RESPECT their equipment, Time and effort?
    These rules are basic common sense. They aren’t written anywhere at Neversate but I absolutely followed them when I first showed up, and continue to as we move into a new year. They aren’t hard or restrictive. Treat the gym with respect and it is returned to you. Simple.
    Another great video brother.

    Great video Brian. Plenty of advice that is applicable to a new job, to volunteering, to pretty much any other group activity. I recently moved to a different state and joined an off-roading (4x4) club. Much of what you suggest is what I have followed when interacting with the group, to earn my place and be accepted by the group.
    Best wishes for a successful and blessed 2019!
