Alla prima, nel 1792 al Burgtheater di Vienna, “ll matrimonio segreto” piacque così tanto che l’imperatore Leopoldo II, non pago dei numerosi bis, invitò a cena l’intero cast, e dopo il banchetto volle riascoltare l’opera da capo. Fu solo il primo di una serie innumerevole di elogi di cui l’opera godette per tutto l’Ottocento, alcuni usciti da penne illustrissime come Stendhal, Goethe e Nietzsche. At its premiere in 1792 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, “Il matrimonio segreto” was so popular that Emperor Leopold II, not satisfied with the numerous encores, invited the entire cast to dinner, and after the banquet he wanted to listen the opera again. It was only the first of a countless series of praises that the opera enjoyed throughout the 19th century, some of which came from famous authors as Stendhal, Goethe, and Nietzsche.
