  • In this video, I'm comparing two identical 3D printed terrain tiles. One is printed in filament, and the other in resin. I go over the pros and cons of both and paint them to see which one looks the best.

sweet vid man once you got them painted it was really hard to tell much difference and this being just 0.4 fdm is really impressive!

FDM is good enough for terrain for me

It would be interesting to see how that worked out with a .2 nozzle on the FDM machine. The quality of FDM is getting really impressive. Great video.

They both look great and really close in quality. I don't have a resin printer so its FDM for me but I think if I had both simply to be cost effective terrain would be a FDM endeavor.

I actually think both are good to use. For the miniatures and for high detail structures i use resin, for general stuff like trees and rocks FDM.

If you quickly run a kitchen butane torch over the stringy bits on you FDM print, you can shrivel up the stringy bits.
Thanks for a quick and concise video on this comparison.

That 0.4mm standard print looks great next to the resin but if you want to compare detail prints a 0.2mm nozzle on high quality does an amazing job and i'll trade a fraction of better quality that the resin produces for the convenience of FDM any time.

Resin printers don't deliver a fraction of a better quality they have substantially much higher quality to the point even light sanding can erase detail, this detail doesent show up on camera but my mars 5 ultra can practically imitate the texture of skin when doing .02mm layer hight at a better convenience and resolution than my other resin printer i bought for double the price a year ago, resin printers are getting way easier and cheaper in the past 4 years, but so has FDM, feels like an arms race right now.

@@miguellopez3392 It all depends on the models you are printing, yes resin gives much finer detail but for my purposes the difference is fractional and near impossible to see at normal viewing distances so I'll happily trade that improved detail for an easier life. I have a 14k resin printer which I'll use if I find problems with detail in an FDM print. However my first port of call will be the FDM printer because so far its been less grief.

FDM for the ease and resistance to warping, especially with modular terrain.

what i recommend is sanding down the edge of the scraper into a blade edge and sanding down the laser etching on the plates with fine sand paper to make it easier to remove the resin from the plate.

For terrain I go FDM the vast majority of the time. But as with miniatures, there are times where the increased details are desired at which point I go resin instead.

tip for the resin for next time use a small spray bottle with 99 @ alco and spray it a little wait 2 min and it should release even better just soak in warm water 40-50 c with plate and then release it

I am looking to get into 3D printing. I want to print both miniatures and terrain. I don’t have a lot of space inside my home, but the garage has room. I live in northeastern US where winters get kinda cold. Do any of the 3D printers require certain room temperatures to function? Will they break if set up and used in the garage where it may get cold a few months of the year?

    Hello,
I was hoping you or commenter's could recommend an FDM printer that's uses HIPS filament. I'd like to print toys for my 3 year old and would like to use massive amounts of Testors to keep the pieces together.

Never having printed in resin, I'd be interested to know which is the stronger/more durable piece?

    • @miguellopez3392

FDM can get you durable meterials at a lower cost but resin offers choices that are better for mechanical systems and high tempature environments

How much more expensive is resin printing terrain vs filament? I have a resin printer already, but am just getting into printing terrain. Want to know if it's worth picking up an fdm printer (I am planning on full modular terrain tiles)

for size, its better to go for FDM for cost and ease of of clean up but Resin will give you the best detail available good enough for fine painting. you can get cheap resin for about 15$ a KG which is about 900ml in resin since its slightly denser than water. but cheap resin is typically very brittle and weak compared to typical FDM plastic but some of the more expensvie tough resins can be several times stronger than FDM plastic if you heat treat them in some of the more expensive curing stations. you can mix flexible resin to make resins less brittle as well and act more like rubber. you can expect resin to be servral times more expensive than FDM in the long run.

@@odisy64 Thank you for the detailed answer. Upon consideration, I have decided that I will acquire an FDM printer for terrain.

@@baracuta3279 dont blame you, i just got done filtering 6 gallons of alcohol fuel so i can reuse it for cleaning more models, i print a lot so its worth saving about 100$ in alcohols. i only need to do it once a year but it is a very toxic and straight up dangrous flamable procces so i only do it during winter outside on a windy day. with FDM you get some fumes and you just need to avoid carbon fiber and glass filiment since those produce micro fibers that act like asbestos. and stick to your skin and lungs.
