- We are showing you how to swap the Wahoo KICKR cassette from 11 speed to 10 speed.
For those that have a 10-speed bike, you will need to swap out the 11-speed cassette that comes with the trainer.
Here is a list of Tools I recommend
► Park Tool Cassette Pliers

In the video I didn't mention the Wahoo RPM cadence sensor that is also included with the trainer.
Unlike the Tacx Neo that comes with a cadence sensor within the trainer, the Wahoo KICKR uses a RPM sensor that requires mounting on the crank arm. Wahoo calls this unit the WAHOO RPM CADENCE SENSOR which included with the KICKR. The sensor is Bluetooth and ANT+ compatible and weighs just 7 grams. Additional RPM sensors can be purchased separately for $39.99.
The Cadence sensor is a magnetless sensor and uses an accelerometer to calculate RPMs cadence. It should be installed on the non-drivetrain side with either the industrial strength double sided tape that is included or with zip ties.

Thanks Tom this really helped. I just got my first smart trainer and had never messed with a cassette before. The instruction's were all pictures which weren't quite clear. This was a life saver. Thanks again!
I looked so long to find out how to do this. Thanks so much!!
Thanks for this.. a 2022 smart trainer newbie
Thanks friend, got new wheels and the rear came with a silver spacer. My cassette is 10 speed, and I believe this new neohub is 11 speed!
Yep. The NEO is 11 speed, so the 10 speed cassette with the spacer should work.
Wahoo sent me the KICKR Core to test out and they included a 10/9 speed cassette spacer.
Hi thanks for the video, granted I know it’s 2017. Can see you also had a Tacx Neo in the background. I was wondering if you had any experience with the Tacx Neo 2T and what’s your take on that compared to the kickr V5.
Thanks
Love the idea of the Cassette Plyers. I have the chain whip and always have a problem with them. I'll look up the cassette plyers. THANKS!
Hi Keith,
Here is a link to my Amazon Account for the Park Tools Pliers. They really solid and will last probably forever.

Tom Crandall ordered it right after I saw your video from amazon. Thanks
You will love it. Once you get it you might as well sell that Chain Whip.
Yea, I ordered it right after I saw your video. Amazon at $50.00. Looking forward to getting it tomorrow. Thanks! Maybe I'll catch ya on Zwift. USMES and ZSUN group rides.
Hello. Thanks for this video. Question, if my bike has a cassette with 8 speeds, do I have to install a 8 speeds cassette in the Kickr? I just bought one (version 5), so the question is if the 11 speeds cassettes can be converted to an eight speeds cassette (the same cassette). Thank you, OP
Super-helpful! Thanks so much for making this!
Hey, I have a 12-30 casette and with the spacer included, the casette doesn't fit, it's slightly larger and therefore the lock ring doesn't tighten up. What could I do? Should I use a spacer with a different size?
Great video. Which cog gets the boot when you go from 11 to 10? Smallest?
I lost my granny gear. That said, I suppose I could have lost my 11 tooth and gone with a bigger gear.
Good afternoon. Have you ever tried to use some kind of lubricant in order to try to reduce noise in the KICKR BELT POWER GRIP? I have this model from 2017 and it was always noisy.
Hey Pedale,
I have not. I was never too concerned with the noise.
Tom, great video. Can you tell me the exact tool to order at :55 (lockring removal) . I started this project but believe I have an old freewheel removal took -- does not seem to work. Thank you very much
Sure thing

Tom - - I used the Kickr with my Avail advanced pro 11 speed - but wanted to keep that bike for road use only. So i purchased a 10 speed cassette - follwed the instructions but when I shift to the lowest gear the chain goes into a space between the bike and the cassette - - which means i have to manually get the chain back on the cassett - what have I done wrong.....yes, mechanics and are not on friendly terms. Suggestions?
Hi Debby,
I am thinking you my have to adjust your barrel adjuster. What is happening is the cassette is now a bit different size than your bike uses, so it drops the chain below the lowest gear. One option might be to go to a bike shop and see if they have a thicker spacer. The other issue could be the chain and the cassette aren't quite compatible, because your chain might be worn. If you haven't replaced your chain in a while, that might (big MIGHT) solve the problem, but it might not.
Hi Tom. I have a MTB that has a wider chain than my road bike. I want to use the MTB on my new kicker. Are all rear cassette the same? I assume not. I assume a 10 or 9 speed cassette would allow for the wider chain?
My technical foo is no match for your question. Honestly, I am not sure. Your best bet would be to contact Wahoo on this one. I never tried using a mountain bike on the trainer. My guess is you would probably want to use your mountain bike cassette on it because if you don't the gearing and shifting would be all messed up.
At 2:05 you didn't add the spacer that came with the new cassette. According to Wahoo "If your new cassette includes an additional spacer, install this before installing the cassette.". I forgot it first as well, and by adding the spacer it reduced the noise quite a bit.
What's your opinion between the Kickr and the Tacx Neo smart ? (power accuracy, realistic feeling..) Thanks
I have to say they are both good trainers. If you live in Europe I would go with the Tacx and if you live in the US the KICKR might make more sense.
I have a few reviews of them up on my website.

Hi, if I’m fitting my existing 10 speed cassette onto an 11 speed hub that my new wheels have, I will obviously need a spacer. But, will I need to index my gears again after the change? I’m concerned each gear will be in a different position after the spacer has been added. Thanks
Hi Super,
Usually when I put a bike on my trainer with the spacer (10 Speed), I do have some difficulty getting into certain gears. That said, I don't try and change the indexing. Best advice would be to have a dedicated trainer bike and have it's gears indexed for the trainer so that they operate smoothly.
Hey Tom! So I'm getting the new Kickr sometime this fall and my mountain bike has an 8 cassette. I'm gonna get an 8 cassette for the Kickr and then I was wondering if you knew if the 1.8mm spacer that comes with it will work or do I need a different spacer?
Hey Chris,
I think the spacer that comes with it is more for switch between a 9 or 10. I have never tried an 8-speed set up on the trainer. I am guessing will probably need a different spacer. I would contact Wahoo's support and ask. They did update their trainer this year. The main updates were better accuracy and adding some bumpers that make it feel a little more dynamic when rocking from side to side.
question, if my 10 speed cassette comes with a spacer, do I put the wahoo 1.8 mm spacer on, in addition to the thinner spacer that comes with the cassette (Shimano 105 CS-5700), or just the 1.8 mm spacer. any thoughts? thanks for a great vid.
Hmmm. I would try the 10 speed spacer first to see if the gearing works. You might not need the Wahoo spacer.
Hi Jim. Which spacer did you end up using. I just ordered a kickr core and going to take 10 speed shimano cassette off my bike trek domane. I was thinking there should be a spacer on my bike hub already.
@@foxriverat apologies just saw this. be carful not to lose the spacer that comes in the kickr box. I lost mine but wahoo sent me a replacement.
No problem Jim. My bike didn't have the spacer and wahoo shorted me on the spacer. Luckily I have a bike shop 2 minutes away and bought one from there.
I had the same question. I recently bought a 10 speed cassette. Installed it with the spacer the bike shop gave me, since I misplaced the spacer it came with. Unfortunately it makes noises have a feeling something went wrong.
Do you find you need to tighten the cassette down every once in a while? I just had to tighten mine down again after five thousand miles or so..I have the '17 also
Hey Bill. 5K miles. That is some milage, I would say it is always a good idea to check it out every now and again. It is probably a good idea to take it completely off and clean it up. With 5K on it, you may even need to think about getting a new one.
@@GearMashers Now that you mention it I suppose I should change it..It's been on there since I bought the kickr new. Thanks for bringing that point up
Meant to say replacing a 11 speed cassette with a 10 speed cassette. Also the spacer mentioned is a 1.8mm not a 1.18 inch.
Gear Mashers hi what was the name of the tool you were using instead of a chain whip?
Hi A P, They are called Chain Pliers. You can get them from Park Tools or from Feedback Sports.
I wrote an article on them.
gearmashers.com/best-rear-wheel-cassette-tools/
Just to be clear, you're only using the 1-1/8 spacer between the freehub and the cassette, and not in addition to the smaller spacer that comes with Shimano 10-speed cassette?
Hi George. The spacer goes on first and then the cassette. If your 10-Speed cassette comes with a spacer, you should be able to use that instead of the one supplied with the Wahoo trainer. They should be the same size.
@@MiniatureReview They are actually slightly different thicknesses. The indexing is out slightly on both for me on the Core. Bit of a pain.
@@BisleyBob I think length of free body of kickr is same with 11s wheel (2.85mm longer than 10s wheel), so that you need to use both 1.8mm(included in kickr package) & 1.0mm(usually included with Shimano cassette package) spacer.
FYI: Length of cassete:11s(no spacer)>9s(with 1.8mm)>10s(with 1.8mm & 1.0mm)
永原聡 Thanks. I’ve experimented with both and each individually. All require me to change the indexing when I put the bike on or off the trainer. I’ve just memorised how many quarter turns I need to do on the barrel adjuster when I take the bike on or off. I think I settled with just the Wahoo spacer.
Is it bad for the bike if you kept using a 11 speed cassette for the wahoo on a 10 speed bike?
If you can make it work, it shouldn't hurt the bike.
The spacer goes on first, then my 10 speed cassette?
Hey Pat. That would be correct. Spacer then cassette. It essentially takes the place of the 11th cog.
I'm running 11 speed Di2. Right now I have the 11 speed wahoo cassette on. But when switching over to my 11 speed Ultrega road wheel I have to make adjustments. I'm wondering if i change the wahoo cassette over to Ultrega would it help?
Hi Bill,
If you can use the same cassette brand/make that you use on your bike it might help. Even that though you might have a few gears off. I have never been able to get an exact match and always have a few gears off on the trainer. I just lived with it and avoid those gears.
Ok thanks..I guess I'll just have to learn how to do these adjustments..my wheel on trainer was a lot simpler.. The shop had my trainer wheel pretty well all matched out with the road wheel so there wasn't any messing around there.. I have a good excuse to buy a bike stand now..
Hey Bill if you do decide to get a work stand, I highly recommend the Feedback Sports Pro-Elite Stand.
amzn.to/2G5GM9v
I talked to some of the SRAM mechanics this past week and they absolutely love them. One mechanic I talked to said the Stand was pretty awesome for travel and was better than the Park stand.
I wrote an article on the Top Fork mount stands, but after talking to him, he preferred the Pro Stand.
gearmashers.com/top-fork-mount-work-stands-for-cycling-repairs/
Just got my Kickr today and put my 10 speed on it, and the shifting feels really wonky. I'm guessing a 10 speed cassette will fix it?
Hi Doug, Sorry for the late reply. Yep. A 10 speed cassette will feel wonky. You will need to get a spacer for it. The spacer will go on the inside of the cassette. If you don't have one any local bike shop should have them.
Yep got it thanks. Swapped to a 10 speed cassette with the spacer. Amazing, I'm hooked!
Sweet.
I just made another video on replacing the EDCO body with the new 2018 SRAM/Shimano Body. The new body is much easier to put on cassettes than the older EDCO body.
ua-cam.com/video/22BIIxrA5go/v-deo.html
Where can I get one of the 1.8mm spacers from?
Hey Dave. Most bike stores should have spacers for the cassette. You can also order it online from places like Jenson USA. www.jensonusa.com/Shimano-11-SPEED-185mm-Low-Spacer-185mm-Low-Spacer-Shimano-Y4T724000?pt_source=googleads&pt_medium=cpc&pt_campaign=shopping_us&pt_keyword=&gclid=Cj0KCQiA2NXTBRDoARIsAJRIvLxF7wo7rK9DJ0iYzWUQ7swnNA5_TEpFm4Z5txQDouWgpCZMNCDy_ocaAo85EALw_wcB
Thanks! Just ordered one.
What about a 9 speed Cassette?
I haven't done it, but it shouldn't be a problem. You just need to go to a bike shop to get the correct spacer or contact Wahoo.
Tom Crandall Thanks :) I have Shimano HG20 11-32 9 speed casette on my 2014 Trek Neko SLX. Do I need to install exactly same casette on Wahoo kickr core?
@@milan4ever I would say yes if you want the indexing and shifting to be roughly the same. Sometimes I put a cassette on and I have to adjust the gears. Now I just have a dedicated bike for the trainer so I don't have to worry about it.
FYI... "reconditioned" 2018 Kickr just arrived. No wahoo box, no 1.8mm spacer, no instructions, broken plastic foot on the center support. Kinda disappointed, Thats' a lot of money.
Wahoo will send you one.
