Well.... actually (pushes up glasses) this is much more like their post punk phase. Til we see something from 79-82 (rock for light, black dots etc. era) we're not talking punk or hardcore really.

Song's called "I Against I"; it's supposed to have no set foundation, it's supposed to be chaotic, it's supposed to illicit the very response you had. It's expression of a state of being, a person who is incomplete and working against himself; or more succinctly, a world working against itself.

    • @jeffg4686
      @jeffg4686 Місяць тому

kinda right. But I think it's more about how this world teaches us to go for everything, and often the rich people above have you CHEATING OTHERS to get what is being dangled in front of you. It's a broken society to the core. That's more what it's about. Capitalism makes you go against what you know is right, and the society forces it on you - even just to survive for most. "I don't wanna have to go against I". I don't want to have on MY conscience what society or a boss is forcing you to do.
the "what you gonna do" is referencing - Are you going to go along with capitalism and cheat the others to get the most? -

Their influence is immeasurable. They are all accomplished musicians who chose this visceral music form. They are true pioneers. Try Fishbone, 24-7 Spyz, Living Colour, Minor Threat, Sick of It All, Agnostic Front, Minutemen, Descendents - and many more.

Also Henry Rollins was very inspired by Bad Brains. He fronted Black Flag and Rollins Band, and publishes books, does huge punk speaking tours, acts and travels the world. Famously sober, like Ian MacKaye and others "straight-edge"

I know it's academic, but I can't tell you how great this album was in 1986, it was like seeing photographs from the surface of Mars... Life was different back then, I'm from a conservative all white town in England, I was 21 when I first met a black person. It'll always be a distant view, which is fair enough. They weren't accessible at all, that's something conscious rap and hardcore punk shared. This is a band that changed lives.

Your reaction was expected. As soon as I saw 'I against I' in the title I knew. This song is one of the craziest Bad Brains songs and one of the fan favourites but not ideal song to introduce someone to this band. I sincerely hope you don't stop here.
Bad Brains are seriously one of the
most unique and versatile bands I know.
If you want something more approachable yet interesting, try:
''Rise", "Soul craft", "God of Love", "Secred Love" "Give Thanks and Praises" or other more chill, reggae tunes by them first.
Then once you are familiar with Bad Brains sound, give I Against I another listen.

My writeup of their debut album in which I mention I Against I LP.
Second hardcore band in a row--you know I'm loving this.
And what a band it is! Countless musicians in the early 80's hardcore scene say they were the greatest live band they'd ever seen. Ian Mackaye said, " I saw the Bad Brains for the first time in June of 1979, opening for The Damned at The Bayou, this disgusting jock bar. I needed a fake ID to get in. The Bad Brains opened and transcended anything I'd ever seen. They were the band...that had a profound impact on me. They moved me."
Vocalist Paul "H.R." Hudson, guitarist Gary "Dr. Know" Miller, bassist Darrryl Jennifer and drummer Earl Hudson, four black dudes in Washington D.C. began by playing jazz fusion in 1978, but after hearing records by Dead Boys, The Dickies, Ramones, The Clash, The Damned and Sex Pistols, they dropped fusion and punked out.
Bad Brains add reggae songs on their albums. They've cited a few bands as inspiration. " A big influence was Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder and a group called The Dickies...Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder on the spiritual end. The Dickies more on the musical end. Because when I heard their music, I said ' Gee, it's fast. This is really bad.' That's what made me really start liking fast rock and roll, which eventually led to hardcore which is what we're into now."
Dr. Know has said, "We wanted to be known as the fastest band in the world. The Ramones were the fastest but we could improve on that. At the same time, we didn't want to be doing that same three-chord routine. Not that there's anything wrong when the Ramones do it, but we had something to prove musically. That's how we've always been, wanting to keep it challenging and interesting. The gift of musicality is not to be taken lightly."
Bad Brains' enduring legacy rests on four albums. Black Dots collects their earliest recordings from June, 1979, the album in this article, Rock For Light (produced by Ric Ocasek) and I Against I (not really hardcore, rather a muscular rock attack and simply one of the great American LP's of the 80's).
Bad Brains were not the first hardcore band; that honor probably goes to Black Flag who recorded their EP “Nervous Breakdown” in January, 1978. (It was finally released in February, 1979.) But when Bad Brains first 7" single, "Pay to Cum" bw "Stay Close To Me," came out in June, 1980, it blew thousands of punk minds all over America. Suddenly it was a whole new ballgame. There had been fast hardcore songs before this, but nothing like the obliterating power unleashed here. My friends and I played "Pay To Cum" over and over, until the grooves were worn down. And with every listen we were in awe. Many times, I tried singing along to the lyrics of this 1 minute 32 seconds song but always wound up failing about a third of the way through, crumpled up on the floor, laughing like an insane person.
This debut LP has fifteen tracks, twelve lightning fast hardcore and three much longer reggae songs that fit in surprisingly well, although that's not the band's strength. The blistering "Sailin' On" opens the record. " You don't need me anymore/ So I'll just walk right out the door/ Played a game right from the start/ I trust you, you used me, now my heart's torn apart." "Banned In D.C." (about their problems with the clubs there) " Banned in D.C. with a thousand other places to go/ Gonna swim across the Atlantic 'cause it's the only thing I can do/ You can't hurt me/ Why? I'm banned in D.C." The incredible "The Big Takeover" " So understand me when I say/ There's no hope for this USA/ Your world is doomed with our own integration/ Just another Nazi test." And the iconic "Pay To Cum" (here in a different version than the 45) " I make decision with precision/ Lost inside this manned collision/ Just to see that what is to be/ Perfectly my fantasy/ I come to know with now dismay/ That in this world we all must pay/ Pay to write, pay to play/ Pay to cum, pay to fight."
Totally amazing singing and playing. Hear this album once and you'll never be the same again. A crowning achievement in modern American music.

Ah, the sound of high school (along with 7 Seconds, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, and....echo and the bunnymen. Hey, it couldn't all be hardcore.). For hardcore these guys were VERY listenable, melodic even. You don't have to love every genre, Chod! lol. You might like some of the punk-lite or college-radio punk stuff that happened around then and led to the poppier punk of, say, Green Day and their ilk. Maybe try like fireHose (another fab drummer in George Hurley! love that guy) or some PiL/Public Image Limited or Dead Milkmen or some Husker Du.....more melodic, more recognizable song structure, etc. Still glad you tried this, a great memory for me!

Most insane song ever. It is mosh pit style. It's NOT about relaxing. It's about raging against the f'ing system. The society. The confusion presented by the rich aholes above.

Nice to see you found the Bad Brains, the best New York Hardcore around. When the Beastie Boys just formed and were hardcore the Brains were there favorite band. They said the called themselves Beastie Boys so the initials would be BB like the Brains. MCA has played in some bands with the bass player Daryl Jennifer. Bad Brains are considered super influential. You should look up the documentary about a Detroit band called Death it is super fascinating. I recommend anyone check it out. They were 3 African American brothers playing proto-punk before punk and never made it big. Then in the 2000's someone found one of 500 records the had pressed up and word got out. Now they are playing again and their sons are involved involved. Its a great story. "A Band Called Death" ua-cam.com/video/_btNuWoUN30/v-deo.html

Reactors tend to go to this particular song, which seems is some ways to obscure the roots of the band. I think it is essential to understand that most of their strongest songs existed in the late 70s and stayed in their set. I prefer Black Dots in regards to recordings. There you can feel the raw innovation that, IMO, was never improved on. I think you've got to accept, too, that two minutes is long for a punk song, but I digress. You've offhandedly dismissed a seminal band of black musicians that set a bar so high within the punk genre that it has never been matched. If a ten minute prog song can have changes, so can a short punk song. Also consider that they are a Rastafarian band, thus the idiosynchratic language. Try again: ua-cam.com/video/qC24DAATT0Y/v-deo.html
