When this one was made there was a battle royal going on between the old players and the new players. The old players were playing tuned to EADG and the new players wanted to play in horn keys, or ADGC. The scale lengths were all over the place until the mid twenties when Gibson decided that it should be twenty two and five eights and Vega chose a twenty three and one eight scale. Today the Irish players are using the longer jazz scale with EADG tuning and the intonation is really good, where as on the shorter scale models the intonation suffered some what.
Whenever I see a banjo repair, I’m amazed at how simple the instrument is vs. an acoustic guitar. I’d love to learn about what makes a certain banjo expensive (vs. a cheap); other than age and brand. Great stuff though.
The binding on the neck was probably sap wood. They liked to use sap wood because it soaked up the black die real fast But sap wood rots real fast too.
Never liked banjos until I played one about 10 years ago and it was fun to play so bought a 5 string in a second hand shop for £40 and I played it for about a week and its hung on my wall ever since! Think I might give it a setup and play it once and hang it back up..... the conclusion is I don't really like banjos.
You're a lucky man. I didn't like banjos until I played one a couple years ago. Now I've got five and can't stop trolling marketplace looking for more, and searching for banjo building/repair/playing vids on youtube. Send help.

I was most interested to see how you cleaned and polished the metal hardware, but unfortunately this part was not shown. What kind of wire brush did you use? and did you attach it to a Dremel or a power drill?

Do you know the definition of perfect pitch? It's when you throw a banjo 20 feet, it goes into a dumpster and falls on an accordion.
