Waylon Jennings
Barry Walsh
Did you ever get to see Waylon live? I'd love to hear about it!
Evansville , IN mid 80's or so. Don't remember much lol! Closed with Honky Tonk Heroes no encore.
In Phoenix 3 times, Austin once! He always sounded just like the records. I sure miss that outlaw stuff he made famous!
I never got to see Waylon live.
I saw Hank Jr. live 1984 with the Georgia Satellites in Lexington, KY
I saw Merle Haggard live in 1983 in Lexington, KY
But had Waylons albums and casette tapes
I got to see him open for Hank Jr. at the "Tulsa Country Fair" back around '81 or so........Waylon's set was good but then Hank came out, fired a shotgun, tore off his shirt, and did solo's on every instrument on the stage, so .........you know........"Entertainer of the Year" kinda thang..........
Ottawa Canada. Fan ran up after the show to get an autograph, and a guard pushed the fan down. Waylon looked at the guard and sent him flying with a big push to his chest. I worked for Haggard from 88 until 92. Him and Waylon had a spat about a poker game way back. I always wished they would work together
My Dad loved Waylon Jennings.
Our song was 'Luchenbac texas' and three days after he passed away it came on the radio at work...it was my first day back.
I had to sit down for that one.
That was the first song I heard of his and I was hooked instantly. I couldn’t believe it decades later when I found out that Waylon didn’t like that song. I just assumed if he sang it and I enjoyed that he must have too. How little did I know.
My all time favorite song by Waylon Jennings is "I've Always Been Crazy (But It's Kept Me From Going Insane)". Funny story about that song: I was in a Wendy's restaurant on my lunch break one day, and the lady who took my order asked me how I was doing. I responded, "I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane." She laughed and said, "Sir, you just made my day."
I will never be able to pin down my favorite Waylon tune. His catalog legitimately has a song for every mood and time of the day.
Well said
Hey Otis,
Fester Hagood from down here in Athens, Ga.
I was a longtime close friend to Waylon's former road manager and front-of-house engineer, Wes Delk.
Sadly, Wes passed a few months ago after a decade of serious health issues.
He was an amazing Storyteller and we'd talk about Waylon for hours. He also was road manager for Dawes, Widespread Panic, Coe, Chubby Checker, Brittney Spears, the Indigo Girls, and so many more.
He was a local Athens boy, and we threw a big outdoor festival in lieu of a funeral. Cindy Wilson (B-52s), Randall Bramblett (Traffic, Bonnie Rait, Greg Allman), Pylon, Tommy Townsend, & many more played the send-off, and raised money to help his family and his favorite charities. I believe his Waylon family also donated a considerable amount.
Great job as always. Next time you get the chance, you should ask him if he knows the story behind why Waylon used the alias Philip Barnes when he got rooms at hotels.
Rock,
Fester
Belle of the Ball is a song I’ve sang since I was a teenager. I still incorporate it in my sets when I play.
Otis, you are Awesome. Thank you my fellow Musician.
I love Ralph Mooneys steel guitar playing.
He was the best
I saw Waylon three times. The first time in Cheyenne Wyoming. The second time in Phoenix. The third and final time Billy. Bob's in Fort Worth. He was so nice and funny every time. My favorite
Love Waylon, as a kid he narrated my favorite show..then later in life I became a huge fan of his other music..one of a kind!!!
These interviews are priceless, thank you Otis!
Reggie was absolutely an 800-pound guitar player. Loved this episode! Never heard the Mooney story. Great work, Otis!!!
Thanks Zac! That quote about Reggie is my new favorite Waylon quote. : )
Never got to see Waylon live but Waylon is one of my absolute favorites. Him and Merle are tied for number one. “A Long Time Ago” is one of my favorites written by Waylon and Shel Silverstein. But I love all his songs. Luchenbach Texas, has got the great first line. But all his music is inspiration to me. Love it.
That is so funny because Merle Haggard is my favorite #1 and Waylon Jennings is a very close Second !
@@brianfischer149 actually merle is probably my favorite and Waylon my second favorite if I really had to pick. Merle’s just the best country voice. Pure. Waylon is more rock n roll which I am an equal split between.
How can I not resist telling my Waylon story. I moved to Australia in 1988 by marriage, wife and I both liked the Highwaymen and Waylon in particular. In 1995 or so the Highwaymen came to Melbourne for a tour. Concert at Melbourne Park arena. We got tickets high up and late in the show people were moving down to the stage. I did that also. Got to see 4 of my favorite singers at once from 15-20 feet. Awesome to look up and see all those craggy faces. As were leaving, we saw their tour bus and Waylon and Johnny there waving to the crowd, us too. Then we went home.
In 2014, I met an elderly couple who were also at that show with a large group. That group stayed in their seats for 45 minutes after the show ended. Then Willie came out, with his guitar and sang to them for 45 minutes. Bob and Anne were delighted with that. I was so sorry I missed that. Bob and Anne were also great Highwaymen fans. They had the most awesome music collection I had ever seen, thousands of records, dvds, and cds in their basement. When I first entered their basement, my eyes popped out of my head and I stood staring, stunned out of my senses. We spent the next 7.5 hours talking music and me looking at their gatherings. They fed me because all the conversation got me hungry. We met a few more times as we had the same music interests and I then lost touch with them.
If you do anything on Don Williams, I have a story to tell about his show in 1989 that the 4 of us saw, but we had not met yet.
My fav Waylon tune is Old Timer. There are so many others I like...................................................
Hey! The same thing happened to my in-laws. They went and saw Willie and some other less important musicians (not the highwaymen) and after the show, every one had left. Well them being sentimental and relaxed, they just hung out in their seats talking. About 30 minutes after the show, here comes Willie, and a stool. He sat there and played for them for another hour or so. Amazing man that Willie Nelson.
I love these stories , this is country music history. I appreciate all of them and think you are doing great by sharing them with us.
I also remember seeing Waylon in the late 80s. A bunch of us went early and ended up in the first row. He was his usual friendly self with a lot of banter with the audience. At one point he asks the crowd to pick a song so having a very loud voice, I yelled out “Silver Ribbons”. He stepped out in front of the lights and asked who yelled out. I stood up and said “ I love that song”, he laughed and said “You don’t even look old enough to remember that song” but he played it. I was happier than a pig in mud…lol
Waylon Jennings is my number 1 singer I'm only 44 and I grew up on Waylon and highway men and lot of the old timers my ex wife said I have a old soul because of the music I listen to I said that's not it I just have good taste lol I saw Waylon last concert when he bless our little town of saint Joseph Missouri
Late 80’s, in Henderson NV outside Las Vegas, I saw his bus in a grocery store parking lot. Went inside and ran into Waylon in the isle, hat, shades and all. I didn’t say anything but it was a memorable moment for me.
“I’ve Been a Long Time Leaving” is my favorite Waylon song. Great conversation, I always like hearing Moon stories!
I been a foo oo oo oool - here the truck comes going by like it's flyin flapping the big legs on my Levis they go whoop whoop whoop whoop
I like it too!
The folks that live in Waylon's old house in Brentwood left the wrought iron arch above the driveway that says "Southern Comfort" with the flying W in the center. A lot of people would have torn it down just to keep people from gawking.
My favorite Waylon songs are "It's Not Supposed to Be That Way", written by Willie and "Rose in Paradise", that I think was written by Stewart Harris.
Love all these interviews . I've been introduced to many people I didn't know before . Thanks Otis
I really enjoy Luckenbach Texas that he performed with Willie, even though neither of them wrote it, but another great Waylon song is Drinking and Dreaming.
Waylon, my favorite outlaw, best country band. Thanks for the interview, Otis and Barry.
Thanks, Bruce, for listening.
Lord, ALL of these interviews are amazing, so much fun to hear.
Sadly, I never got to see Waylon live but I grew up listening to his music and still do to this day.
Seen waylon in wendover nevada super small show at the stateline hotel in 1990 Good times !!!
I'm presently snowed in. Watching it snow more. Thanks Otis for another great video and thanks so much for doing these. I'm an old man and they take me back. And I love some of your songs too !!!
Otis Gibbs, you are a history fanatic as myself love it all thank you
Lol. I worked on those ferries between NS and Nfld. Willie crossed, and Barry White, too.
Yes, saw Waylon live in Sydney, NS. It was probably the first concert I’d been to since moving there. Really enjoyed it. Iirc, his wife wasn’t there.
Got to say my Waymore fave would have to be “Just to Satisfy You,” one of his early hits with the killer opening line, “Someone’s gonna get hurt before we’re through.” Hon. mention: “The Wurlitzer Prize.”
Here's a video about Waylon standing his ground. ua-cam.com/video/CasfV-xKw-Q/v-deo.html
We saw him and the Waylors at Lanierland Music Park in Forsyth County, Georgia in 1980. We were college students that didn't mind the drive just to see a great show. And it was. Still love listening to him, and finding a few songs that I never heard. The best country entertainer ever. Hell, maybe the best entertainer.
The word ICON is way over used. Waylon was the genuine real deal!!!
Man I just discovered your channel and I’m so glad I did. One of the best on UA-cam! Instant subscribe.
Rainy Day Woman is my favorite Waylon Jennings Song !
Love everything & anything of Waymore!! Love these stories too!! Thank u!
Awesome Awesome video. This was so great. Many thanks !!
Lonesome, On’ry & Mean is my personal favorite.
This was another great interview. A couple of these stories I had not heard before and it’s great to hear them from another point of view. Life on the road wasn’t always a picnic back then.
Thanks, John!
@@otisgibbs thank you Otis for keeping these videos coming. You have a huge amount of friends in the music industry and it’s been fun to hear these stories and learn about various experiences of being on the road, in the studio, and on stage.
Thanks Otis! I have loved Waylon forever! Saw him live twice in Fort Meyers
I got to see Waylon many times in the KCK KCMO area never missed a show.
Barry, you tell your stories well... THANX.. I was a radio announcer for 30 yrs, and had a chance to catch up with WAYLON for some time in the early 90s.. He had just got back from New Zealand at the time.
I just can't get enough of these waylon jennings stories.
Thank you for posting this. I love to hear the inside story of touring.
I stayed at Waylon Jennings park in little field tx . The town is sure proud of him.
This morning I woke up at 5 am with a really good melody running through my head. It came to me in a dream. As I struggled to wake up and not forget it, I slowly realized I it was the first bar and a half of “Help Me Make It Through the Night”. But I was right - it was good!
So that’s my favorite Waylon song for the day.
I took Waylon as a mentor, a hero, an idle at a very young age. And I still find myself asking 'what would Waylon have done?' to many of my problems and life's bringings. But I have been called many things bc of it. But mostly people say about me....He's the real deal, or he tells it like it is! , Or he don't put up with people fucking him around.' either of them is the truth. But if not for Waylon I don't know what I would have been. I miss him and love the man. Thank you Waylon!
Impossible to choose a favorite Waylon song! Every song sounds so personal and full of emotion. He could hum the entire tune without singing a word and knock you down with weight of the song!
Two Waylon stories.....When I was a young kid in about 79 or 80 my dad used to take me to a bar way out in the county somewhere between San Antonio and Houston where I would shoot pool and drink cokes in the back room. One day to my surprise there was a ragged looking old man sitting in "my" area drinking alone. My dad told me to go play outside and not bother that man. It turned out to be Waylon. My dad and his friends shot a few games of pool with him and had a few beers before he left. I have no idea if that was true or my dad just telling me that. My dad was not known for making things up and he was a little star struck for some time after that and to me that guy sure looked like Waylon himself. I have looked at a lot of pictures of him from that time period and the two images look the same. Second story...........My uncle was playing guitar in a band at Crystal Beach Texas when Waylon surprised them with great compliments on their sound and playing before leaving.
OTIS, you are the best , you let these guys tell their stories. I want to tell you luv your albums too.
love this kind of shit so much. thanks for these types of videos !
thank u gentlemen!
Good series of videos. Thanks
Waylon has been touring since the 50's, and has been from the bottom to the top, everywhere in between, and back again. To actually tour with someone like that would be a once in a lifetime experience for anyone. An actual legend, yet still grinding it out......, Mindblowing.
I heard Waylon in an interview state that Dreaming my Dreams was his favorite song to sing of all times ..
Finally a show that talks about a working musician, not only about the stars
Classic! Reggie WAS an 800 lb guitar player! That's no slight to Barry, who is top shelf, his own self.
I think this has become my favorite Waylon quote. : )
You will need to bring Barry Walsh back for a few more; lots of good stories!
Mental revenge favorite Waylon song..
Favorite song? Come with me.
Waylon is my all time favorite artist. The man has played with the best. From Holly to Charles. Epic.
i always been crazy love that song to many to list great singer
Me and my sister sat in the back of a little ford aspire and drove to Wheeling WV from up in Canada to see Waylon RIP and he never showed up. They replaced him with TG Shepherd or someone, we got our money back and drove home. I’m not knocking anyone but I wanted to see Waylon, had my heart set on it.
Buy the time I got home I could hardly walk, I never got mad at Waylon though. I had been listening to him since I was a baby. My dad RIP was a Waylon freak, he seen him at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto a few times. I can remember my dad telling me he didn’t show up there one time. That was when they got busted coming cross the boarder, it was in Waylon’s book. I never did get to see Waylon, but I sure tried hard. ✌️
I met Waylon and he signed my fender Waylon edition guitar. He was a very nice guy...
I saw waylon in austin at Willie's pic nic in 1985 only time I saw him live
Fantastic stories! Keep-em coming
Thanks, Bill!
As a one time photojournalist back in the day before smartphone-cameras and auto focus and exposure ones too, many musicians and song writers were very good photographers.
I just can't pick one song as a favorite. I have been a fan since the 70s.
Actually met Waylon before a show in Wheeling, WV. Real down to earth guy and we talked for awhile as if we were lifelong friends. Couldn't believe he acknowledged me by name during his monolog. He was, (and still is) the greatest ever. Still listen to his music daily!
Bullshit
Lonesome ornery and mean best Waylon song
Freedom to stay
That was great. Thank you.
Waylon was a great singer him and Willie Nelson those two are when country music was real
all of WAYLON'S songs are my favorite. :-)
Great interviews Otis!!! Keep up the great work. You've developed a pretty unique niche with your videos.
Aw, Waylon!! Sweet Mental Revenge is my favorite Waylon song but it's really hard to choose.
Couple of guitar players I jam with here in Santa Fe, are from Roswell & saw Waylon a bunch. Their band got a couple of warm up gigs with him locally, in the '80's. Waylon was a big turning point for me. I heard his newest album at a big frat party in 1969. Blew me away. Anyhow, I added another verse to the end of Waylon's song "Amanda" because it's too short! The Roswell guys listened & said it was Ok. And that it actually fit in lyrically with the song. Made me feel good. Love Waylon.
I have one too want to trade?
My favorite is Amanda. I still listen to it every single day.
I prefer the earlier Waylon tunes from the 60s, like "The Chokin' Kind". I also prefer his version of "McArthur Park". I am enjoying the interview with Barry.
Waylon took out Robbie Turner if I’m not mistaken. Robbie told me the story of how Johnny cash approached him about singing the steel guitar rag on his album man of steel.
When Waylon and Pooty used to get together it was some of the funniest moments I have ever witnessed. No filters on either of them and trying to one up the other be it substances or rhetoric. It is a shame they both passed before their time was up. RIP Hoss and Pooty.
Really appreciate your interest in finding good stories. If you're interested in finding out about a story unfolding at the moment, check out SON OF ZELMA. He just came out with his first single. Better yet, get his story firsthand at his debut show. He's playing live this month 7:00 pm Sat. March 26th in Lynchburg, Va. at The Miller Center Theatre. Thank you for sharing some behind-the-scenes accounts. Keep 'em coming!
" Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way "
My to favorite Waylon sings 8ve akways been crazy and are u sure Hank done it this way
Alright. I have a cool one. My name is Waylon. I was named after Waylon Jennings. My Dad used to hang out and party with Waylon over the years. Mostly in AZ. My Dad was.. let's say... the guy who came with the party favors. My Dad unfortunately passed in 2004, but not before he shared some cool stories. Most of which, I cannot or will not repeat out of respect. Just know some tomfoolery happened and none of them would have had it any other way. My only memory of Waylon Jennings was when I was a really young kid. Maybe 5 or 6. (One of my first memories). I got to see an outside show at the Rawhide campgrounds. I remember sitting on a bunch of Hay and listening to music that I did not understand. My Dad brought over this man with a gnarly beard and I remember that I thought the way he talked was cool. I never really heard someone talk like Waylon before. My Dad introduces me to Waylon and Waylon to me. He look at me and says, Waylon.. this is the man you are named after. He is a good man and he sings in a country band. Waylon then leaned in and handed me something to write on and gave me a red pen and asked for my Autograph. I thought it was the coolest thing that Waylon asked me for my autograph. My Dad told me that apparently, Waylon had my autograph on his mantle for a while along with some other cool things from fans with the same name. I cannot confirm that, but that is what my Dad said. A few years later I went to Waylon's property which was about 30 mins away from where I was living at to drop something off. Not quite sure what it was, but I remember seeing my Dad give him a hug, handshake and we could not have been there any longer than 8 minutes. Some years later in Jr High I remember hearing of Waylon's passing. Very sad. He was buried in the Mesa Cemetery about 1/2 mile from the house I grew up in on Grand St in Mesa.
Nice interview. What ever became of Rance Wasson? We were friends back in the Tulsa, Okla. Nine of Cups days. This would have been the early 70's just before he joined the band. And what about Gordon? Have long since lost track of all those old music friends.
Man, you're old school! Those guys (Gordon and Ranch) were before my time.
Excellent interview
Jesse Colters song Storms Never Last is one of my favorite Dr. Hook songs. I like her demo on piano of this song and her duet with her husband also but Dr. Hook did a fantastic job on their recording of it. I like I'm not Lisa too.
Awesome stories!
That leather encased telecaster just a few notes and you could pick out Waylon. Jessie is so beautiful. The buddy Holly band and the story was so sad. Just a wonderful life
my cousin drove waylon's bus in 70s. he use to bring the bus to my parents house to get a home cook meal.
One of the biggest mysteries for Waylon fans was why exactly did
Ralph Mooney get fired. Yet another Waylon I never heard two days in a row. Can you pull off a hat-trick and do it a third time???
I wish Richie would have wrote a book a tell-all of sorts. I think I've been a great read. I know he was with waymore for much of both of there careers.
My Uncle....Max D. Barnes wrote several songs with and for Waylon including "Drinkin' And Dreamin'" and they we're friends.
I Do Believe
Great Mooney story..
Got to see Waylon, forgot the year, 🤭.. the gigg was called 48 hour in Atoka.. wow… if I knew then.. 😯
Favorite Waylon tune is “Wurlitzer Prize”
Had Waylon taken his seat on that fateful flight on “ the day the music died” we wouldn’t have just lost Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper, we would’ve never had the legacy we had! Country music needs and doesnt even know it, how desperately they need this generation of outlaws!
Waylon gave his seat to the Big Bopper who was sick. If Waylon had been on it, the big bopper wouldn’t have been killed.
@@rexoates4484 so true I cant believe I actually types that duh? Hahaha! Thanks for the moment if clarity and correction.
thanks uncle otis....i def think of wuylon as teddy bear ish big ole kodiak teddyb ear but yeah....
I used to tell my friends "I've always been crazy but it kept me from going insane
I’ve always heard Mooney never liked Waylon. But Waylon really liked him
Live show? 1985 on the lawn at the Brookfield Zoo w/ Jessi & John & June
