What a time to live in. I can enroll to Professor Stokols class and enjoy his lecture at the comfort of my home. Pretty much like what Negroponte predicted in 1995. The space will be transmitted to our reality.
my takeaways - • Obesity can be a social contagion and have network effects. If someone close to you gets heavier or lighter, you might catch that too • People you tag on facebook are considered close to you, and increases connection. They are more likely to follow your tastes • Housing projects might be awarded for architectural laurels only to be torn down later because they weren’t up to the needs and comfort of residents - especially low income housing projects • Solving community problems is essential to EP • Obesity has been consistently growing in US and even in India • Supersize me- a documentary - a man eats mcdonalds for almost a month and severely damages himself. Food that increases obesity is more easily available today, especially in low income areas • Hard architecture - allows no imprints by users vs. soft architecture which does allow • People feel better with nature views outside their hospital windows • My thought - We are products of our environment and we can influence it heavily, especially because today we live much in the built environment. Infact to constantly change our environment is something very human in nature.
Top three causes for the rise in obesity: 1) Lack of exercise and mobility both at home and at work. Solution: Exercise and move more. If your job doesn’t involve movement, quit and get a better job, or better yet, start your own business and manage your own time to incorporate adequate movement and exercise. 2) Lack of nutritious food. Even good foods like salads from the grocery store contain very little nutrition because of how they are grown and the increased time of transport. Solution: Grow and raise your own food. Learn to hunt, fish and forage for wild foods. 3) Too much estrogen and estrogen-like substances (like soy bean oil) in our food and water. Solution: Grow and raise your own food. Learn to hunt, fish and forage for wild foods. All of the above affect our children the most. They learn bad eating and exercise habits as children. As their metabolisms slow as they become adults, they become obese adults. Some are already significantly obese even as children.
