An overly complicated solution to a problem that has been satisfactorily resolved with the collet style pullers and kinetic hammers for years.
My thoughts as well. Ill stick to my Hornady collet puller. The only thing I can see this really shining at is doing pistol ammo because a collet puller generally doesnt grab them so well.
I agree & also tried the kinetic hammer (which sucked). Hornady collet system is mucho grande or TOV MA'OD! The loud banging from the Pile Driver was annoying.
I agree, this looks like a solution searching for a problem. A collet puller is cheaper, even buying a collet or two. Just the racket this thing makes would drive me nuts.
The BIG difference is that it does not MAR the bullet... a Collet does... and the Hammer is a pain in the ass to use
Too many time consuming steps to be practical.
I like Frankford Arsenal but not this thing. I’ll stick to the kinetic hammer puller. I strike it on a metal anvil near my work bench. Faster and much less expensive.
Does work on 9mm light with factory crimp?
Neat gizmo. My RCBS kinetic bullet puller has worked for years. The only thing I did to it was but a yellow foam ear plug in it to keep the bullet from deforming.
Great idear!
Thanks for the ear foam idea.
Hey, me to. Works great. (No I do not support them snow flakes.) :)
Expensive hammer. Too much manual input for the additional cost. An engineered way to part people from more money.
I've broken down over a thousand rounds of reloads and milsurp ammo with hammer puller with less expense and effort
The Hornady collet system seems like an easier/faster process.
It is. I have one and it works really well. I see no practical use for this.
@@willagresham2978 I totally agree, my Hornady collet system is way less work
The Hornady collet bullet puller is allot faster when pulling rifle bullets and round nose pistol bullets. This may be better for the short tapered handgun bullets that don't have any surface for the Hornady collet to hold onto.
I agree!!!!
Agreed. I’ve got the RCBS collet system. Smooth, quick, quiet. I could pull bullets while my gf sleeps 20 feet away.
I'm on my third inertia hammer in 25 years and I've done thousands. Twice friends blew up pistols and had tons of questionable ammo. I took them apart for half of the components. This contraption would have taken much longer.
Love your channel, lots of good info. Thanks
Should be called the HARBOR FREIGHT of bullet pulling!!
I'm guessing this is made in the same plant in CHINA as most of Harbor Freights goods!
It even sounds junky
Sorry Gavin but I’m hardly impressed by this device. I’ve been using the RCBS bullet puller in my single stage press. It is much easer and much faster to use than the device you are showcasing.. I wouldn’t consider this thing when my RCBS device is less expensive, easier to use and much much faster. I love your reviews but this one is a big fail.
Exactly
I love the idea ... but ... can Frankford go back to manufacturing in USA? It feels so cheap and it screams comunistic china “quality” When you touch it.
I believe the proper term used to describe CRAP made in China is “Chineseium”... 😆. That term covers any and all types of material used in the manufacture process.
things are made with as much quality as the investor wants to pay for. consider that iphones are made in china and how people will still gladly line up and pay $1,000+ for them
It's cool but it seems slow and inconsistent. Think I'll stick with my cam puller
Did he say “Work thru this ammo in no time “ ?
I can probably break down 100 rounds with the RCBS COLLET bullet puller. In a 3rd of the time as this Harbor freight gadget.
My Lord, what a great item to make breaking down overly complicated, time consuming, multiple operations needed, hearing protection required and alot of fumbing and bending. Good job FA!!
Thanks for the thorough and complete review of the Pile Driver. The positive points are that it may be more comfortable to use than the hammer type kinetic pullers, it is possibly safer than the hammer type and it is less likely to damage or mar the bullet being pulled/extracted. The pile driver seems to be somewhat tedious and slow to use. I can't justify the retail price of $50, plus an additional $13 for a different sized carrier. A hammer type puller is around $15-$20, which includes an adjustable shell holder. By adding a foam earplug inside the hammer puller and by using a cartridge specific shell holder, such as used for the Lee hand primer seater, the hammer puller is a much better tool in my opinion. Thanks for the great review. Please keep them coming.
The Hornady press mounted cam bullet puller is way faster. Rarely have I had it make marks on bullets that it wasn't my fault. Obviously the press mounted systems are much quieter. Hard pass on the Pile Driver
I agree. The hornady pullet puller is top in class imo.
My RCBS bullet puller works great and doesn’t make too much noise and doesn’t take much space.
I will stick with my hornady collet puller
I prefer the RCBS iteration but I concur with your final conclusion.
Agree, I use a press mounted RCBS puller similar to the Hornady for all but lead and lightly plated bullets without issues. Cost and having to mount the Pile Driver are the negatives for me.
Nice unit looked kind of time consuming but one you get the hang of it it is faster then my hammer puller I have mounted a steel rod on my wall next to the pile driver .Just slide it over the rod and its done. Bought the pile driver on line for 47.00 + free shipping. Thanks Gavin ! You have a great show keep up the good work!
Thanks for the great video. I thoroughly enjoy watching your instructional videos. You do a very good job of breaking down the aspects of the equipment being used in the video. I've beat on the concrete using the hammer type bullet puller until my arm got tired before the cartridge came apart. This looks like a great remedy to that problem by letting the tool do the "beating". Thanks again for the great job you do rating and reviewing reloading equipment, they're a great help to me.
Thank you so much for the review! I haven’t found any quality video’s on this product.
Glad it was helpful!
There may be a reason for that 😂
I, too, appreciate the review. Before watching it I was interested in the product, but now I'm confident it isn't something I want to replace my collet puller with.
I bought their swagger a couple of months ago and the spring broke in the back of the unit after about 800 rounds. I emailed the company and they more or less told me to pound sand, I am not impressed with the counpany.
Keep an eye on the parts if you're doing a lot at one time. I was nearing the end of over 300 pieces when the nut holding the carrier lock in place flew off. Apparently it went to live in the land of AR dentents. Now it's off to the hardware store for a replacement nuts and a couple spares.
That looks like more effort than it is worth. Thank you for reviewing it Gavin. I will stick with my RCBS collet puller on a single stage.
This Frankford "Pile Driver" looked cool at first until I looked at how complex the process would be for me at the reloading bench. The RCBS collet-type puller has worked well for me in many hundreds of ammo loading screwups and also when pulling MilSurp ammo. RCBS Collet puller works fast, and of course the pulled rounds can't be used for long range accuracy or load development but they're not badly distorted. Collet-pulled pistol rounds shoot just as good as fresh for defensive practice at 5-10 yards and every rifle round pulls easily with a collet puller. If I have just one or two to pull, I'll use the hammer/inertia puller but usually I've got a couple dozen to do, I'll set up the collet and just keep cups and trays next to the press for bullet, powder and case. I use pulled rifle rounds for working up powder charge weights by shooting through a chronograph where accuracy doesn't matter.
Thank you for all of your videos, they have helped me so much with my setup!
Love your channel. Always good information. I bought a Pile Driver when they came out, but it didn't even last 1,000 rounds before one of the plastic arm cams broke, rendering the unit inoperable. Buyer beware.
I got one last week and like it a lot . Quick and easy and it works great ! Way better than hammering !
Update - junk ! Like many others carrier broke . I fixed it first time it broke again tonight .
I like it, I will put one on my shopping list! I especially like how it sits on a wall. Easy to install and out of the way.
Beats the hammer on concrete(no pun intended) type.
Seems very loud and time consuming. Also it requires more space. The Hornady press mounted bullet puller seems to be the better tool. Faster, quieter and more effective. This just does not seem to be the solution.
I think this bullet puller is a great option if it does not damage the bullets. Bullets are pricey since the pandemic. I have some bullets that are hot. They shoot well but are in military cases I prepped and because of the thicker necks those bullets just don't want to come out with the hammer puller. I have a couple of those and have broken one in the past. These just won't budge. It does look a little time consuming but reloading is not something one does to save time as much as make good bullets and you can't reuse bullets if they are damaged unless you are going to just shoot large metal targets. In the long haul this thing would more than pay for itself if one were to pull their mistakes and do over rather than just shoot them with their flaws.
This seems like something for people who dont reload. I mean if you have a reloading press, theres no way you'd use this instead of a press puller attachment
It was really cool when it was coming out of the box and being mounted to the wall. Then when I found out that you had to pull the carrier each time, I thought way too many steps. I think the Hornady is better in a progressive setup.
What a name, that’s what the ladies used to call me back in the 80’s.
What do you do with the powder that you got from the old rounds?
That's pretty neat. Especially on cheap ammo that you dont want to waste rounds down the tube but need the brass and or bullets.
Great video, thank you. Have you used it on lighter bullets weights, such as .22cal bullets 40, 50 & 55gr.?
Holy smokes it's noisy
I think I will stick to my hammer style bullet puller to get my aggressions out...:)
Bam take that ammo lol
Informative. Thank you.
Nice review, thankyou.
Love the idea.
Hornaday press puller leaves marks if you crimp or if projectile is very compressed. You should of done a review on what the people shoot the most. For example 9mm or 45 acp.
A bit off topic for this particular video but, will you do a review of the Lee Breech Lock Pro 4000? The new for 2018 progressive 4 station progressive. Thanks for sharing.
I have to echo what others have been saying. This may be slightly better than a kinetic puller, but as far as mass ripping I’d have to stick with a press mounted puller like the RCBS collet puller..
That looks like a lot less stress than the hammer type I currently use. The only issue i see is wall mounting. I have to move quite regularly (military) and I can't just mount it to walls. But I might be about to put wood on one side of my reloading bench.
This seems like so much more work than the normal "T" shaped puller
Remember that a lot of pistol ammo (most) does not have enough shoulder (vertical wall) of the bullet for a traditional RCBS collet style in a press to function properly. At least, this is what RCBS tech told me. So So while its an odd device it might be a good option to the hammer style - at least for pistol. I should receive my Pile Driver Bullet Puller today. I wish it didn't see so many breakages in the reviews and that it was made is the USA. I'm assuming that its not.
As being very new to this, if you know which powder you used in the ammo, could you save it (not mixing with any other powder) for use later or just put it in a container for burning later?
Thanks for showing this, it seems to be a better way than the ole' hammer type. Do you find this to be more proficient than the hammer style? How does the construction feel, does it feel flimsy and that it wouldn't last very long or is it solid? Thank you!
You almost answered my question. I have almost 300 .45 ACPS to disassmble. I think the powder was wet and two got bullets stuck in my Colt's barrel. Rather than just throwing them out, I decided to save the brass. Is this a faster way than using an impact bullet puller? I'd like to know if this tool can be used on rimless pistol ammo. The bullet is a cast 200 grain wad cutter seated almost down to the point of no rim exposed.
I have a hornady press bullet puller and no matter how gentle I am, it always leaves a ring on my bullet. The Frankford Arsenal looks like the way to go for not damaging the bullet. Definately interested in this.
I like the idea of having a "problem resolution" station. Over the years I have created setups that are more task oriented than having to use the same press/area/station to address a problem (like having to pull a bullet). I like the convenience and efficiency.
DusToDeath don't see anything efficient about this. I'd rather spend $60 on a new Lee press to permanently mount a collet puller.
@@MasterEngraverTV which is what I have done. Many others will think the same and run a Lee as a "helper" for whatever task. I'm just saying to each his own so I see a place in the market for something like this based on the idea of it.
What is that thing on the left, cables and levers?
Nice video. I'll stick with my RCBS hammer bullet puller. It appears to have more steps?
I broke a kinetic puller on my 7th 7mm-08 cartridge. I was surprised since I had years and about 100 cartridges of various cartridge calibers on a previous one. So I went with the collet on press puller. I pulled the rest of my 7mm-08 bullets without marking them. I have marked some bullets with the on press tool, but they were factory sealed pistol cartridges with very little bearing surface showing. It probably would mark up thin jacket varmint bullets. But didn't mark the sierra MK's. This tool seems pretty good. Since I'm setup for collets right now I'm good. But for someone starting out. I think it would be worth it to buy this one.
Hey Gavin, I like the product. I just wish you didn’t have to keep locking in the case every time but you have my interest now. I hate the hammer version and the collet type can destroy bullets of it has a heavy crimp. I will be checking into this!
Got this to see how it worked. It was ok. It did pull bullets but seemed slow. My friend got one and it already broke on him. Based on that, I sent mine back as well. Looking to other options like Hornady or just plain old kinetic that I already have.
got mine friday.. 5.7,9mm and 223..works great..i need the other insert..how do i get that?? cant find..
A swing and a miss!
I’ll stick with the hammer or collet.
WOW .. I’ll tell you what I just may get this my RCBS hammer type just broke in half the other day after 15 years of good service ....LOL I never knew there was such a thing .... seems great ...
No thank you looks and sounds a little cheesy. I’ll stick with my RCBS collet puller I love that thing.
Great video walk through as always. I think I’ll just stick with my rcbs collet puller.
Great review. Did you try any cast bullets?
Pretty neat, what is the smallest size you think? I have a bunch of Hornet that need done.
What do you do with the powder?
Sophisticated device good to impress your friends”
Hornady collet puller does the job done! specially in a Progresive
Wonder how it works with the smaller rimless calibers such as the 380 or 32 acp.
Seems like more work then just slapping my rcbs collet puller on a single stage.
Nice piece of equipment.
I'm going to check it out
How do you dispose of your "unknown" powders?
How do you fix it if it no longer wants to lock at the top?
Will you be able to reuse the bullet, Case, & primer?
I've used both the kinetic hammer and collet pullers and have had mixed results. The hammer didn't work at all on some cases or would have to pound and pound until blisters formed on my hand. And I've had the collet stretch the bullet while trying to remove, some stretched out so far that they couldn't be removed because the bullet became too small to get a grip on. This unit interests me as it shouldn't deform the bullet and saves the hands, but I'll bet there are some cartridges that it won't work on as the hammer didn't.
I have some 45-70 Government rounds I loaded but I'm not happy with their performance. I'd like to pull the bullet and powder and try a different load. Will this work with 45-70 Government cartridges?
Glad to know I’m not the only one with an old bad ammo pile
Does it actually make that noise at the end of the pull or are you dubbing that in?
Great idea, but needs tweaking to where 1 lift, drop does it everytime. With effort of multiple pumps, may as well stick to my inertia hammer.
On a side note. What's the best way to render the primer inert if you are not re-using the primer/brass setup?
Soak in oil
Where was this last November when I was given 300 rounds of mixed rifle ammunition that took forever to unload with a collet puller? (and a dozen or two that took the hammer forever as the collet puller couldn't get a grip)
One will be on order in the next few days.
Thank you!
Suggestion get the larger carrier for 45 sized brass. It will work with standard size, but I think it will be easier with the larger carrier.
Will it do non rim pistol ammo like 45 acp
It worked on 308. Why wouldn’t it work on 45 ACP?
Would this do 458 socom
Gavin,
You should try .32 ACP. If .44 Mag took that many attempts, the lighter bullets like .32 (or the 55 grain .223 suggested below) will be a nightmare.
Also, it looks like this is done for pulling only a few bullets at a time. Having to deal with the cup and all that 100 times - that would be annoying.
now I'm going to get one best's a hand operated one 👍👏😎
I like the Intellidropper a great piece of gear and very happy with it but not this overly complicated thing , Hornady collet system for me
This is a product I will be interested in and I believe I will purchase one.
I have a Hornady Cam-Lock puller. It works very well. I’ll stick with it.
At least on the surface this would be better than using a kinetic hammer that gets powder all over the place. And you're right with collet pullers those can leave marks on bullets which can either affect accuracy or in my case presentation of the bullet for pictures. I've busted 4 kinetic hammers far. I would agree that this has it's =/-
Fricken awesome. Did the hammer enertia 60 rounds.
This beats that with a stick
Gavin, what happened to your left forearm? In the last couple vidoes you appear to have sustained an injury. I hope it gets better soon and that you're doing well.
I'm on my second hammer, I've tried the collet bullet puller dies, not impressed with either. The hammer seems to need too much kinetic energy and the dies leave those rings around the bullet. Between the 'Grip N Pull' and the FA Pile Driver I'm going to have to think long and hard about which I'm going to try next.
All beginning reloaders will buy the inertia type hammer-style puller. Guys doing volume reloading will certainly eventually run into a situation where they need to break down a bunch of ammo, making that new Frankfort Arsenal tool real handy.
I found the trick with the inertia type puller is to whack it against something massive & with a high coefficient of restitution. Concrete floor is massive but not a really good energy returner. Wood block is not good. The anvil of my big bench vise works great; so does a hunk of railroad track.
TBH I can't see this helping much at all in the way of helping do a large volume of rounds any faster from a conventional hammer puller hit on a good surface, on the 44 mag it took a minute from loading the first round into the holder and processing it to the second round going into the holder, that's 60 rounds an hour, sure there's some rounds it might go a bit quicker and you may be able to do it quicker once you get in a groove, but that could be said for the hammer style one too, but i really don't really see the big advantage of this...its kinda gimmicky IMO, I'm also gonna guess its a pretty penny compared to the hammer, has a lot more moving parts to go wrong as well...not for me.
@@weegaz22 I agree I only reload 9mm and have a bunch to be dismantled but that thing looks like way to much hassle for 9 and if you need to stroke it more than once for sure a no go
How long would it take to download two 50 cal ammo boxes of 45 ACP ?
This presentation made me think of the scene in the original ghost busters movie when they introduce the new dude to the trap emptying procedure. Also is there a means of quieting those springs?
Boom!
I would have one happy less noise and easier to use than the hammer but how much and shipping to the uk
It sounds like it's actually louder (depending on what you are hitting with the hammer puller), with sound carried straight into the wall.
Easier it is not fot sure.
I would like too see a demo of 45 acp with 200 gr H&G68 style lead bullet being removed as that bullet does not really work on my RCBS puller.Thanks.
I’d like to know how this does with my problem child: .223 with a 55 grain bullet. A follow up would really be great. Thanks.
Try collar puller, works well
Replace the collar in the kinetic bullet puller with a shell holder of proper caliber.
Bill Raper use a press mounted puller, takes a little setting up but once you learn it they work like a dream. I have both the Hornady cam-lock and the rcbs - both are great on difficult rounds with crimps.
@@flatman5632 I use a shell holder from my Lee Priming tool in the kinetic puller. It works great.
While I appreciate the responses, nobody is answering the question I asked. This is a product review video. Before I invest in the product I want to know how it performs in a typically difficult use case.
...I like the concept..I've broken a couple of kinetic pullet bullers in the past....and since I don't have an anvil in close proximity to my bench so I hafta use the concrete floor...wooden benches do not work...it's not a question of IF you'll need a pullet buller it's WHEN you'll need one...I once forgot to watch my powder hopper as I was 'in a rhythm' using my Lee 1000 to load 9mm - it wasn't until I'd loaded over 100 rounds that I noticed the hopper was empty...you NEVER make that mistake twice...not after you have to deconstruct a few hundred rounds - not knowing WHEN it ran dry...luckily it was less than 100...BUT it was wasted time!!!
Like your vids Gavin. I'm wondering why though you ended up with so many incorrect loads? Were you just starting out at hand loading? Learning curve? We all have had them but seems like an extraordinary amount of non-usable loading's. As for the new toy in the toy-box, I find my Coaxial to work very well if I ever need to pull a round. Keep up the informative vids they are often good to see what the latest innovations are out there.
The kinetic impact system seems to be a good idea, but the method of cartridge lock in needs reengineering. With some tweaking this could actually be a good tool, but in it's current form there's to many steps. As an aside I suggest mounting that rod to the table so you don't have to pick it up each time. Just press down onto it. Enjoy your content. Production quality is very good.
HOLD THE PRESSES MINE BROKE AFTER 100 ROUNDS OF 38 SPECIAL.
Up to that point it was working quite well, in fact flawlessly. It was great at pulling bullets with almost no damage.
The first issue was that the cartridge carrier that holds the cartridge locking handle came off. Small issue since the nut that holds the handle came off. If I had noticed it backing off that would have been a small problem.
The failure problem was the left arm pivot sheared off the pile driver and departed to parts unknown. It shear quite cleanly, you can just barely see where it sheared off.
Maybe I got the defective one, but I would hold off on getting one of these until Frankfort determines what the problem is. If its a durability issue it will require re-engineering to get past that problem.
HOWEVER, if Frankfort can fix this issue the unit works beautifully at cartridge disassembly. It is easy to use, and performs beautifully.
Frankford Arsenal has alot of very good stuff but THIS is simply overkill in terms of noise, cost and complexity.
I am using the RCBS bullet puller solution which works great.
Thanks for the review though !
i use a inertial/kinetic bullet puller that is 'bout 25-30 years old. prolly cost less than ten dollars, back then. foam ear plug to protect the nose of the bullet. i use the appropriate shell holder instead of fumbling around with a collet. i cannot swear by it, but i betcha it is somewhat faster than this new fangled frankford arsenal rig. looks like the FA rig would be cool for someone into gadgetry. i do use a hornady, press mounted, collet style for .223 'cause the bullet has too little mass for the inertial/kinetic puller to be efficient.
No joke it took me 30 pulls per bullet from my hand loads, PER ROUND. Most likely will send back as it beat up the brass hanging on for dear life.
