Thank you Luca, I searched for some carl zeiss older zoom and found this - the review is helpful - as I could see it produces soft beautiful image for filmmaking - as the other CZ lenses I already have.. glad you made this video - so I could see the results... good job.
I bought this lens recently, and agree that it is a keeper. I’m still learning how best use it on my Leica SL2-S, but some of the results have been startlingly good! Thanks for your review - it was one of the reviews which firmed-up my decision to buy it. I paid $180 for like new example on KEH.
I bought the lens thanks to you is freaking amazing. excelent image rendition smoth bokeh and the famous zeiss pop for little money. thanks for sharing
Awesome lens. If you need something more compact with a bit less reach, I’d recommend the Minolta MD 75-150mm f/4, which is optically in the same ballpark.
Sounds to be the perfect companion with the Contax Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 35-70mm f3.4 which is an incredible lens, that rivals many of the primes in that focal length as well. Maybe I should give the 80-200 a try as well.
@@LucaBono.Studio - no visible distortion at all ! It is a fantastic lens. Look up Kyle MacDougals youtube channel - he has a great review of the lens 👍
Can you also try next Vario-Sonnar 40-80mm f/3.5 to review? If it has the same Chromatic Aberration issue as this, I see no review of it only pic that might have been edited to remove Chromatic Aberration?
Hi Luca, is it possible the CA on APS-C is caused by FF lens on APS-C sensor and less to do with pixel density? From the reviews I have seen regarding FF lenses on APS-C the image quality is often worst with more softness than on a FF body.
Hi Ty Lou! Yes the CA are caused by the higher pixel density of the apsc sensor ;) so if you plan to use this lens on a 42mpx full frame sensor you'll have the same CA as the apsc sensor
@@LucaBono.Studio I see what you are saying... This lens might not be a good investment long term wise because camera companies will probably continue increasing the megapixels.
I'm very curious as Lumix S5 and GH5 user so I will try it out on the GH5 to see what happens, I might get a Sony E-mount adapter too to test it out on my friend's A7R to see if it is an issue with pixel density or just crop sensor.
Luca, please could you clarify why an apsc sensor is not a good fit for the 80-200 . I have this lens with a sony 6500 and even at f/8 the images seem very low contrast/ thin.
Because the lens is not sharp enough for the standards of modern sensors. 24mpx with the aps-c sensor is too much for this lens, the camera read only the center part of the lens. Probably with an apochromatic lens you will not have the problem with the a6500, but those lenses are expensive...
@@LucaBono.Studio Thanks - so if I used an a73 that would also be a problem because the sensor is too sharp? I did rent an A7S3 with the 12MB sensor and it looked SO much better ....
@@LucaBono.Studio Got it, thanks. So full frame 24mpx good - 24 mpx APSC sensor is bad. This explains so much of my frustration with my 80-200mm lens on my sony 6500. By the way - my other contax zeiss lenses - 85 2.8 and 50 1,7 and 28 2.8 - all look great on my apsc sony.
Great video Luca, would you rather have the 80-200 or the 85mm prime in your kit? To me the 80-200 seems a lot more versatile. How is the zoom when operating? Do you find the zoom focal length moves by accident when you focus?
I've both and I tend to use the 85mm more often when I film people. For landscape and extreme closeups I use the 80-200. The zoom ring is buttery smooth and amazing to work with! Just get it, you'll love it 🫶🏻

Yes, it's one of the best lenses I have! No it's not parfocal, but it's easy to adjust the focus while zooming in and out. Keep in mind that the front of the lens will rotate while focusing, so it's unusable with cpl filters while filming.

Eh....that's a difficult question. I've 2 summicron 50mm (1 for the film camera) and one planar ZF, I don't see myself getting rid of one of them. They're both fantastic, but considering what you have you should get the Planar to complete your set of zeiss lenses 😉
