  • Welcome back to my model railroad depicting Grainbelt (Farmrail) operations in Frederick, OK around 1999! While no model railroad is ever truly finished, I'm ready to declare this project MOSTLY done. Scenery and structures are all complete, as are most of the important details. Follow along as I show the layout, as well as an in-depth operating session. Please "like", subscribe, and share this video!

Dear Alex, I think the layout is fine as is, the lack of a building opposite the petrol station enhances the rural feeling, and overall, the total layout feels large and open, which is indicative of Oklahoma. I think it is very difficult to model wide open spaces on a model railway, especially in HO and larger scales, and I think that you have achieved this. Re the photo back scene, the current plain blue grey colour back scene again emphasises the open country, and makes the train and the few buildings the centre piece for the viewer, a photo back scene may actually have the opposite effect of making the layout appear smaller, and actually detract from what you have currently achieved. This is a really great model. Best wishes and regards from Australia, to you and your family.

The layout is coming along so beautifully. I like how this is designed and how much you have incorporated but that each detail is curated to fit while still respecting the openness of each scene. That sense of space is such a powerful defining characteristic.

Thanks. I definitely feel transported to southwest Oklahoma when I enter the room, which was the goal. I love those wide open spaces.

A great layout! A small comment about connecting spout between the two structures comprising Cassidy grain. There is not enough fall to have the material travel easily between the two. A rule of thumb is 7’ vertical fall for every 5 ‘ of horizontal travel. I worked in the seed conditioning/grain handling industry for over 40 years and have modified our plant many times over the course of my career. Fabulous job otherwise!

Nice layout. I'm intrigued by using the IKEA shelves. I think I'll consider that for my next (switching) layout.

Congratulations to you and your wife on the new addition to the family! She'll be qualified as a conductor in no time at all, Winston is going to go to the extra board. The golden spike is a amazing goal to accomplish. It has been great following the progress on your Farmrail layout. Thanks for the tour and ops session. Stay safe.-Tom

Great Video! I love farmrail. I hope to catch it more later on down the line, but for now I'll just have to cope with my G&W schemes over here in Durant! Seriously though, I love this layout man

Hi there. Just wanted to say how impressive your former layout was. Iv watched most of your videos and very inspiring. Just wanted to ask what the radius you worked to on the curves to create the L shape of the layout? Trying to work something similar for a plan in a very small room. Cheers

Hi Alex! Just found your blog a couple of weeks ago and must say that I'm very impressed with your current layout. You've really captured the look of Frederick, OK! Beautiful work! Have one question. What speed steps (28 or 128) do you use when running your GP-10's? I have two of them myself and have found that they seem to perform better on 28 S/S. I have them programmed so that S/S 5 gives me 10 scale miles per hour, which is as fast as trains are allowed to run on my under construction end of branch layout. Haven't had much luck getting them to run the way I want using 128 S/S.

Its a mix of different products from Scenic Express, including static grass by Heiki and Silflor, grass mats by Heiki, and tufts by Silflor.

I designed the track plan myself, essentially compressing the prototype track arrangement in the real town to fit my space. You can find a copy of the plan in my blog at okierails.com
