The reason it works so well is because your money is spent on the chipper not another engine. If you were to buy a 85 HP chipper, it would cost you much much more. You are a very practical man. Thank you for sharing. I think I will go your route.
just got myself a gas powered one and it takes up to 5 inches, the log he had that took 30 seconds takes like 15-20 seconds for me, and I paid less than him + the entire thing runs on its own without an entire tractor as well, so its easy to move around. his feeder is pretty slow if you ask me, chippers with drum instead of flywheel are much faster and drags nicely too, they are a massive improvement over flywheel, in case the uploader was knowing more about flywheel versions where u have to push the logs in urself, as for here you don't for the most part, and its also much faster. since his feeder has its own speed he can never get in a lot of small chips that quick,
@@unlimiteduploads2971Yes, drum chippers are faster, but I have worked on both disc and drum commerical chippers. The feed rate is entirely dependent on the hydraulics. Most of them with a powered feed roller have a valve that will allow you to slow the flow rate down for bigger material.
The tractor horse power is decieving. 75 hp output direct from the engine does not mean all of that is transfered to the flywheel. Some tractors can have significant efficiency losses in the transmission/pto especially if hydrostatic. Also, his knives are clearly dull looking at the chips, possibly to the point that it could cause damage- warping the flywheel or starting a fire due to excess heat from grinding the wood isstead of cutting.
I have an 18HP Brush Master.. It's a pain. It works well on 2 in oak, black birch etc., just slow. Best advice for small chippers - cut then chip. Do not let the branches dry out. Green chipping is the way to go. Cut today, chip today or tomorrow.
Great advice! I have Agri Fab chip & vac which I mainly bought for the fall leaf problem as I'm surrounded by Red&White Oaks!But I also have a PTO 3pt chipper that handles the big stuff.
In my teens during the summers I worked for a tree company in Bardstown Ky. Dude had a 390 ford chipper with no speed grippers or whatever those are called it was totally nuts . You grabbed limbs threw it in the funnel and rolled your body out and away with a quickness as it instantly devoured whatever size tree limbs you could drag into it. I know now there is no way I could ever let mt now 15 yo, son do it the way I did . I cring at the thought of that old chipper we were using. Not to mention when you droped the clutch on yhat beast it literally sounded like a airplane once the cutter got to full speed..crazy. sorry this vid just took me back to the days

I've a smaller tractor, JD 125R, but I've only got 12 acres and it's not a farm. Comes in handy for work around the place. One of these, right-sized for my tractor's HP, has been on my list for a while.
I inherited a PTO driven shredder/chipper and it does a good job shredding but when I needed to chip the branches from three thirty foot spruces and an elm with a two foot diameter trunk, I rented a selfpowered one.
Another option is to rent one. I have a 50 hp tractor and I rent a chipper to connect to the PTO when I have a lot of limbs and want some chips for the orchard or the flower beds or the vegetable garden. I’ve considered the option of buying a chipper but with only 40 acres I think it’s cheaper to rent one every few years.
i chip alot and wallenstein is the way to go. these units are great. the pto setup is very low maintenace and easy to work on
The way the "chips" look more like "shreds", I'd say yes, you do need to sharpen the blades! :)

that is a nice PTO driven unit. I agree that any chipper under 10HP is a toy and you can burn it faster in a fire ring than playing with a small chipper. Less handling too. A Vermeer 25HP unit is nice too, but like you said, $15000 is a lot of money.
My brother and I went in together and bought a WoodMaxx. It's not hydraulic, but that thing is a beast. It's been worth every penny.
If you have a tractor that can power it, that PTO chipper is the way to go for sure. Buddy of mine was looking around for one, but ended up buying a stand alone machine with a 4BT Cummins. He bought it at an auction and it needed a little bit of work, but only paid 3 grand for it I believe. I have a video of it in action on my channel... Now that thing can chip... HOLY...
I have run wood chipper since 1989, regular tow behind and the are great, had a tractor at the yard for loading, pushing wood chip about and splitting logs.
I bought an old Swedish drum chipper with an in feed of 16x18 inch. fit the tractor 70HP Case and it is better and cheaper than a standard chipper. Chipper £900 Tractor £4000 or under $6500.
I have a chipper apparently made by the same company. I can't remember the name of it. It is in storage and I have not even seen it for perhaps 10 years. I bought it in, I think, 1976. I can't remember what I paid for it. It has a feed system similar to yours, but it has only one feed roller, and so it probably jams more than yours does. It is all mechanical, there are no hydraulics. As I remember, it will chip as large as a 5-inch tree limb or some such. I have chipped a lot of material with it over the years, but there is nothing left right now for me to chip around home. I now live on 1 acre, in a small town. I am 89 years old. However, I like to design and build things, so I am working in my head on a modification to the feed mechanism. If I remember correctly, the blades are 1/4 inch thick. I am considering switching to thinner blades to produce smaller chips. I use it on my '76 International 464 tractor (36-hp diesel). I bought it new. Do you have a longer video that shows more of the machine. I have pretty much disassembled mine a couple of times, because I am a fanatic on making my tools look like new. Eventually, I paint almost everything. Oh, and I like to restore old machines. I think that I have watched almost all of your videos. Thank you for all of that entertainment.
I have the exact same one lol... i agree, the feed seem to not work well sometime, i tried bigger springs but i didnt see an improvement... on their website the rollers arent like ours anymore tho... recently i decided to sharpen the blades and when i unbolted the "hammer" (the one that is on the bottom of the infeed), it was broken in 2 pieces. all in all a wonderfull chipper... i have seen the new "hst" one but wow the price went up a lot compared to what i paid 10+ years ago
Good video . Have too agree about pto chipper . I have Wallenstien BXR 52 power feed model . I spent the money and bought top quality . Never looked back . I just plan things out and usually build up piles and chip all at once . Chipper is easy too install and remove . The Wallenstien model entry Shute sits nice and low too ground . No back breaking work lifting high .

That's great if you are a farmer, have a tractor, and are using it around the property. However, if you need to transport something to various locations to do cleanups, it's not very efficient to have to haul a huge tractor into a residential neighborhood. If you needed a bucket and grapples for some of the work, your tractor would be stuck on the chipper....you'd have to have a separate loader....now if you could run it off the pto of a truck, that would be cool.

I have a 6" salsco with hydraulic feed rollers. Runs off a 42 horse kubota. It kicks ass. Eats anything you feed it. Including hardwood.

Well ya, you have a great point for farmers. For tree removal guys, they need the stand alone unit. Also your blades need sharpening on this unit. The chips are too small.
Other than sharper blades, the only thing I would look for in a chipper is a bigger diameter fly wheel. A bigger flywheel can save you so much on fuel and reduces the size of engine needed to power it
I agree. I've got the old 8 hp. Murray doesn't do a whole lot.

I agree 100%.........and dont get me wrong.......im usualy not a saftey sally but if you dont mind blowing chips in your pickup thats fine but keep in mind if you throw a knife......its likly gonna go through your back window. Dont ask how i know. But ill tell you that even torqed to spec the knife bolts can loosed or in my case break with use. It the knife makes it out of the chute it likly will be traviling fast enough to even go through the back of the seat and lodge itself in the dash .......sigh

My wife and I bought a chipper from HD thinking it would be great for cleanup. 10HP pull start. And... Yeah, more hassle than it was worth so we sold it a few years later for almost what we paid for the silly thing.

Sold. We just purchased 17 acres of woodland property and I'm in the process of purchasing a tractor for it. This will be added into the snowblower/mower/chipper mix.
Had one without the feed rollers and it was a pain to keep fed. Now I plan to rent a 12 inch stand alone chipper when my sawmill slabs stack up too high.
Great video. Looking for a chipper now four our 1200 acres (won't be chipping it all ;) ) and am in between a standalone or pto driven by a 55 or 65 horse JD tractor.
I like the PTO for the reasons you mention as well as not needing to service & maintain yet motorized piece of equipment.
Question: of the PTO mounted chippers, which are worth even looking at? I don't buy junk but also won't throw good money after bad. Cheers.

We bought a brand new one just like this and it blocked up every time we tried to put green conifer branches through it. The flywheel didn’t make enough draft to eject the chippings yet a small arbor eater wood chipper could chip the conifer branches fine every time.
Same brand? I noticed one of my feed drums were actually installed incorrectly from the factory. I had to modify it so the teeth are oriented in the correct direction. The feed works so much better now, but stupid that the factory didn’t get it right.
How about modifying the chute? Maybe a shorten it up quite a bit..
Is a hydraulic feed worth getting on a chipper? They do look safer in that limbs don’t need to be pushed in.

That PTO plastic cover needs to be secured with the chain so it does not rotate.
I looked at these PTO chippers a few years ago. The brand I saw (can't remember the name) was closer to 5k. I'll have to check this one out. I have a LOT of Osage orange hedge on my property and that stuff makes great mulch but is very hard on equipment. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching! Osage is cool wood. Love it. I used to live in West Virginia and I had a couple huge ones, large enough to mill some lumber. Some of the most rot resistant wood in existence.

Not having another IC engine to maintain is significant. Just ask any farmer who has several tractors, combines, swathers, pick-up trucks, grain trucks, etc., etc. Not to mention temperamental small 2-cycle engines on chain saws and trimmers. My only issue would be having to take off the 3-point hitch mower that is on my tractor. It is somewhat of a puzzle with stabilizing chains and a lot of other things you might not expect. Doable, but takes a bit of time. Oh well, time for another tractor!

You can get a 4020 90+ horsepower and this wood chipper and still be cheaper than a commercial unit. And you get a tractor.

true pto poweer helps but as well sharp knives and the type of wood like pine or green wood. but old dead cypress or any dead hard wood a very different story.

Id like to see someone make a take off for a car you bolt onto a the car with the lugnuts one one side of the car and jack as well as support the other wheel. Like a car pto system.

If you have a large property there is no better setup for wood chipping. The chipper can go anywhere your tractor can go. A trailered chipper that size would tip over.

There are high speed steel blades that you remove and sharpen on a grinder. Not hard.

yes but it depends on your blade condition type of material such as coral lots of moisture or old cypress hard as a rock pine is nothing as well people who are not trying to destroy the machine and themselves finaly good maintenance...
I wonder if anyone has taken a PTO driven chipper and adapted a gas or diesel engine to run it (tractor not available). Make it a stand alone chipper that would beat any HF chipper.

Actually, you can pick up an older 8N, TO-35 or their equivalents,for the ball park of $2500, and be able to do the same thing.
Now i wish you would have told me that before i wasted 275.00 bucks on a 5.5 hp unit, because its junk.
Kicks more sticks at me then it chips up. And i keep trying to figure out how to get more out of it, maybe a 427 motor and manul transmission.

My 6" Dk2 gravity fed chipper will put that thing to shame.
My chuck n duck blasts that in under a second....but it feeds at 60 miles an hour 220 HP

It's the best because it's essentially a commercial chipper. The only real difference between this and a commercial unit is the power source, and possibly component durability, but I'd wager these units are just as durable as the commercial ones.

When you said "you're wasting your time with those little jack in the box things". I was like 'Alright!' then when you showed your chipper in real time I was like 'what the hell?'. 30 Seconds to process one 4m branch? You will be chipping longer than you are pruning.... It's even 40 secs until you put a new branch in, I've seen pencil sharpeners process more material than that!
we are so disappointed with our stand alone chipper....a craft knife would be more efficient!
Some would say you have a tiny chipper they make real chippers that you need a crane to lift the tree to put the tree into the chipper so why are you wasting your time with that toy ?

I have to disagree, used chippers are not a bad way to go. I just bought a vermeer 6inch chipoer used like new 37hrs. Half the cost. Faster then your pto chipper and towable. Also hard to take advise from someone who blows chips into back of truck bed, no protection for window. Or nice paint on truck. For a farmer a pto chipper is good idea, thats about all i see.

PTO chippers are for people who already have a tractor for other purposes, obviously.
If it uses a big spinning disc with insert teeth, it's going to be slow going in comparison to even a cheap in-line chipper - in-line versions don't need the feed mechanism as they pull material just by their action - it's all linear. That isn't the best chipper - not by a country mile. That's a slow, power hungry chipper - like all disc chippers.

I’ve got the same set up. I bought a 70 hp diesel Ford with a front loader for $6500.00. I then purchased the pto chipper, new a year later ( different brand) but the results are the same. Chews through branches like nothing. Those stand alone chippers are a waste of money.

I agree but not everyone needs a tractor-driven chipper like smaller lifestyle block owners and large property owners doing smaller stuff one of those gas engine-driven chippers that can be pushed around or towed by the lawn tractor/quad bike are ideal because using a big,powerful tractor-driven machine for small branches/trees is like using a. 50 BMG rifle to kill a rabbit.
To the people suggesting that people burn small trees and branches it's not practical or even illegal if it's in a urban area because of bylaws and also consideration for neighbors.
