Yeah brother. Takes a lot to admit a mistake. I got my live wire about a month ago, gonna be honest. I tried to poke through a box upon deployment, I went through the same emotional drama as it's my first otf too. I work construction, and it is a solid knife and holds an edge very well.
Yeah that’s considered a “safety feature”. If you fire it into something, like a paper towel or cloth, etc., it will come “off track”. To fix this, yes, you can pull on the blade until it locks back into place, you can “fling” the blade out until it does the same or you can hold it vertically with the blade pointing straight up towards the sky and hit the butt of the handle in a downward motion and that will fix it too. It’s good to know different ways to fix it just in case it happens during a time when, God forbid, you might actually have to use it in an emergency or life threatening situation. I suggest learning how, and like I said earlier, all it takes is firing it into a piece of paper, or anything soft except your hand or any other body part, and then trying out the other methods mentioned above. I glad that you were able to find out the right information and come to the conclusion that the Kershaw Livewire wasn’t faulty and I hope you have many, many years of enjoyable experiences with it!
Be careful when you ever disassemble it. Be careful with the switch (slider), if I remember correctly there is a small spring and a small white plastic element. You have to be careful, it is easy to lose these elements. There is a video on UA-cam somewhere - a guy disassembles the knife and shows. My knife did not open properly after a few days, something was blocking it, I could not even pull the blade out with my fingers. The problem was some minor contamination, I disassembled it, cleaned everything and it has been working properly for over a year. Sometimes something gets inside. I tested it a bit for resistance to sticking into wood - I think it is a good knife
Im a knife collector, and almost all videos about knives - posted by experienced guys. And this video from a regular user, it's something so cool to be honest. Just honest thoughts of the man about the knife in a real life
I take all of my OTF’s Brand New out of the box take them completely apart and Polish all the moving parts to a mirror finish and use a very light coat of white lithium grease on all moving parts and springs and WOW! What a difference in how the knife works for deployment and retracting the blade. I also own the Livewire and did the exact same thing.
You picked a good first knife. One suggestion, when you take it apart to clean it, after you loosen the screws, take the halves apart in a one gallon ziplock bag. That way if a spring jumps it will be in the bag. After a couple of times you won't need the bag.
I never had a failure with my Livewire. Once in a while I'll but a bit of lube on the sides and also vacuum it with the blade retracted AND the clipped removed so I get more suction pulling through the screw holes in back. I've seen people really putting the Livewire through some pretty tough stuff and it all held up. It's not a weak knife.
Glad to see it’s working for you. Keep it clean. Keep it lubed. Treat it with respect. It should last you a lifetime. (And yes, they do have one with a tanto blade.)
Its a safety feature that all otf have. If it hit something while deploying the blades comes off track to keep for causing serious damage to you. Just pull the blade fully forward and its good to go. Its not a failure.
I just got mine today and after a few minutes of non stop child like playing with it, I had the same thing happen to me. But it happened when my thumb flipped off the slide when it was just about fully extended. Pulled it out and felt it click back into place easily.
@marktweet7395 This has happened a few times with mine. It's always because of dirt and grime inside the handle. I just remove the pocket clip (two T6 screws) and blow air through the screw holes to clear out the trash. Then pull the blade fully out, add oil, & operate the slide several times to get the oil all down in the mechanism. So far, I've not had to remove the handle scales for a deep cleaning.
Thanks for the update. It's an amazing knife which we are not allowed to have here in Minnesota. I have other MN legal Kershaw knives that I carry everyday. Great company
This can happen very easily another way, which I've had happen with other OTF knives. If you cut a lot of packages open at once, the adhesive from tape can get on the sides of the blade. If it builds up, it can cause enough drag between the blade and the frame to prevent full deployment. Clean and lightly lube the blade and it's good as new. I would think that muddy environments, especially in cold weather could cause this as well.
My Livewire did the same thing 2 weeks in… Hot water, bit of Dawn Dishsoap… activate wet, rinse and repeat. Dry…, activate… No problem since. have a bunch of autos/OTF’s… I’ll use a bit of WD on autos, but I don’t lube OTF’s… My 2cents.🤷♂️
@mikecompton6401 I workforce say it is difficult to deploy, only that you must do so with intent, with purpose. It's a pocket knife with a very sharp spear point leading the way, so Kershaw has ensured that it's not going to deploy accidentally.
@@1ohmwrecker I pulled it out until it locked on, then oiled it a few times. It works very well now. Fun what I've seen, from ppl who are much much more experienced with otf knives than I am, the Livewire is the very best otf on the market. I have to take their word for it. So far, my only bad experience with it has been due to my own inexperience with mechanical knives.
@Barbent1317 The G5 is a killer, for sure! I prefer a single bevel over most solid tips, but the g5 does bleed them right out. I just wouldn't trust a pyramid style head to get between ribs in all cases. Single bevels are easier to sharpen, too. That leaves more time for beer.
My brother those are legit points however you shouldn't have to go through all that trouble when you pay that kind of money for that kind of knife. LiveWire failed you you didn't fail livewire
Great video. Very informative. Thank you.👍😁
Respect for the good follow up video.

Kershaw does make a live wire with a Tanto blade in Magnacut
Yes they do

A great knife
I need to see the Cardboard Bx Stab Test .???
I use Lucas CLP on my Livewire and my Deadlock works good smells great

Had the same experience. Factory fixed it

Go check out difference in cutting oil and lube.

It’s bc you tried to deploy the blade into something. Only reason why youd have to reset it like that.

Great video and tip, nice knife and I'm hoping to pick one up
Rem oil is probably your best bet has Teflon lubricant in it and its cheap + high quality, deff don't use any kinda of food oils.

That's just happened to Me with the Kershaw oil xdxd
Is it hard deploy the blade? My microtech is quite hard to push the slide on the outside.

Thanks
Watch reviews. I have a friend with a micro tech ultra and this is waaayyy easier to deploy and it doesn't chewxup your thumb.
Yeah u just failed the blade. If you flick it hard enough it'll jump back on track.

G5 broadheads and fixed blades, haven’t failed me yet!
