Washington, D.C.
June 17, 1972
Five men break into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Office Building. They tried to set up a wiretap and photograph confidential Democratic Party documents. However, the police caught them in the act and arrested them. Little did most know, these men were connected with the Committee for the Re-Election of the President, or CRP, or CREEP (hee hee), the organization directly tied to President Richard Nixon in order to help him get re-elected.
Flash forward to May 1973, and thanks to multiple ongoing investigations, now more and more Americans are thinking the Nixon administration was directly linked to the Watergate break-in.
The U.S. Senate Watergate Committee began public hearings, and the Nixon administration appointed Archibald Cox to lead a separate, independent investigation. Flash forward again to July 1973, and Americans found out that there is a new system in the White House that automatically records everything in the Oval Office and Cabinet Room. In other words, if Nixon was in on the Watergate break-in or even if he just knew about it and was trying to cover it up, there could be evidence of it in the recordings. Cox, as well as the Senate, immediately subpoenaed the White House recordings, or required that they be submitted to court as evidence. However, Nixon refused to release them, citing his “executive privilege” as the president. He even ordered Cox to drop his subpoena, and after Cox refused, Nixon had him fired. Not a good look there, Nixon.
But the investigations only picked up. In what eventually became known as The Watergate Scandal, a total of 69 people were indicted and 48 people convicted for either participating in, aiding in, or covering up information about the Watergate break-in. MANY of these folks were top Nixon administration officials. By early 1974, it seemed pretty clear that President Nixon had at least known about the Watergate break-in and tried to cover it up. However, there was little solid evidence, and Nixon had still refused to give up the recordings.

You totally left out the fact that famous long distance runner and Shrimp restaurant entrepreneur Forrest Gump was the one who called the cops on the guys who broke into the Watergate hotel
Don't worry, I'll bring it up in my upcoming Watergate video ;)
Yeah, and not in fact an African American securty guard.
@@shrimpfleawhy do you have to specify his race?
😀😃😅🤣
@@ash_11117 probably one of the "woke" people who think everything is racially motivated. i'm black and i dont have any issue with forrest finding the CRP people instead of a cop who happens to of negro race
This is really interesting. Since Nixon avoided impeachment and Ford pardoned him, it never occured to me that there might been other cases on Nixon involving the Watergate Scandal. But it makes sense that the Supreme Court would step in to get those tapes.
I was not around when it happened, but I think Ford pardoning Nixon was the right call, so the nation could heal. I still however think Nixon was responsible for Watergate and the man feared the election would have been stolen from him like he believed during Kennedy. If that happened, I do not know for certain, but Nixion believed that.
@@Estarfigam
Pardoning also implies an acceptance of guilt, so it could also be spun as still saying what Nixon did was wrong
And don't forget the Pentagon Papers case. The Court perhaps was biased against Nixon, tbh
@@iammrbeat
Because of when Nixon tried discrediting the whistleblower, that might have biased the Supreme Court a bit?
I mean, sure, but in either case Nixon was in the wrong, so the Court’s collective distaste for Tricky Dick was well-earned
@@iammrbeat I don't blame the court for being bias on Nixon if they were. According to Professor Dave (youtube channel), Nixon been up to shady stuff since he ran for president after Lyndon B. Johnson that would of been unconstitutional/illegal if proven. Possibly even before that. I wouldn't be surprise there were people trying to find evidence that would stick even by the constitution for a while, and when watergate scandal happen and it was discovered there was tapes, they saw it as their chance and jumped for it.
nixon’s whole story as a president is always so interesting to me, this was a really good video (as usual lol)
Thank you! I plan to eventually make a video about Nixon's life, and look for a Watergate video soon!
Nixon is very in middle for me. There some things I like about him, yet there are other things that he did. Which I disliked about him.
@@iammrbeat looking forward to it!!
@@uncrazy2614 what's there to like? He's a liar and a crook and a coward.
The President is a public official that we elected. I think everything he does should be held under public scrutiny for the duration that he is in office. This will put a lot of pressure on him, but that's what being a world leader entails.

It is truly captivating how everyday citizens of the USA felt about the scandal of Watergate, and it was truly sad for Nixon to mess up like that to win the election even if most people were gonna already vote for him (as they did in our timeline).

In the UK we have a similar problem with leaders being above the law.... I can't believe its a debate if they should not be above the law! They lead a country, they have more responsibility to that country.
If leaders can break the law without inconvenience then we might as well have autocratic monarchs
I don’t think anyone thinks they should be above the law but some things relating to security are important to keep private
I think the old saying that power corrupts should be applied to any position of power. The sad thing is, they delude and fool us into giving them power.

Hopefully it will never be cancelled 🙃
Presidents make the law and they must follow the law. If the government won't follow the laws they make, that's authoritarian.
Well put!
Congress makes the law. Unfortunately, in modern times Congress has become more lock step sycophantic with their party's president, current or former.
@@Jakamakala yep pretty much there is no head guy its why we have 3 branches of government just without the checks and balances of past.
Watergate tarnished Nixon’s reputation, but sometimes I wonder how he would be remembered in the present had those men never gotten caught & Nixon got to serve out his second term.
Nixon wasn't as bad as most people think he was
Thankfully, Forrest Gump dropped a dime on them.
If he never got caught, he would have had more than 2 terms

Omg, I watched All The Presidents Men for the first time a few weeks ago and was thinking you should do an episode of Supreme Court Briefs about Nixon!
How did you learn to read minds?

Do a video on the party switch next! Would love to hear your take on it.
Future video idea: US Supreme Court and European Court of Justice compared (how they operate, how much and which powers they have, how judges get appointed, for how long, etc.).
One of the biggest questions that I have is how we would view the Nixon presidency if Nixon was not so paranoid and criminal. I actually like many of his policies and miss his style of conservatism, but he destroyed his legacy and the trust of the American people in the presidency for years.
Agreed, the older I get the more I think Nixon wasn't so bad after all
@@iammrbeat You ranked Nixon as the 5th worst president in American history back in 2018 and in the F tier in your presidential tier list in 2020.
Yeah, wasn't Nixon considered a very good President before Watergate? There are good reasons he was reelected in a landslide, after all. I've even heard people argue that he belongs on both lists of Best and Worst U.S. Presidents.
I think he was slightly above average but not a good person and a criminal as a republican I couldn’t stand him
Remember how he beat Humphrey in the 68' election, it was helped by a dirty job with his campaign manager Kissinger etc in ilegal talks to avoid peace in Vietnam
Actually justices Burger and Blackmun while agreeing with the majority on limiting executive privelege, believed that the special prosecutor lacked standing to sue Nixon. Their fear from the possibility of Nixon's defying a non-unanimous decision played a part in their vote. Steven J. Abrams further explains this 'game' in his book Game Theory And the Humanities.
United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind and Ozawa v. United States?
Also great video as always Mr Beat.
Thank you, and I hadn't heard of both those cases!
I remember a political cartoon from the 70’s titled something like “Nixon and the Incredible Vanishing Tapes” which showed Nixon holding a tape reel in each hand with short fragments of tape suspended between them. Sadly I can’t find a copy of this one online; I don’t recall if it was in a local newspaper or Mad Magazine.
Very convenient timing with the release of this video Mr Beat.
