It just flew over my house in Essen, Germany. 23.000ft, my windows closed and rain outside and I still thought "Wow, what's that noise outside", looked on flightradar and saw it was UR-CNN from Prestwick to Istanbul. Impressive sound. Antonovs are cool. Some years ago, the AN-226 made me wake up at 6am, departing from Düsseldorf with a brutal noise.
i like how sometimes the combo of shutter strobe and shutter jello makes one one prop look like a 3-blade and the one next to it has 5. Also i like how it just disappears into hyperspace at the end.
It really puts the turbo in turbo prop. The way the exhaust is designed almost like a jet just obviously shows how they tried to get as much thrust as they could out of the engine.
Usual start for a mid-50s turbo prop. The Allison J-33 in the American T-33 was a lot worse, they used to shoot flame out the jet pipe, on startup. The RCAF version used the Rolls-Royce Nene engine, a completely different engine.
This is an old design of a turboprop engine developed in 1942-45 ( Germany) where everything is done on one engine shaft, BMW Jumo 012, in the USSR it was used because it is a simple design🤷, but there is a drawback - engine control in case of failure is difficult and requires additional human control .
Us at Liverpool have seen 6 Antonovs in the past week alone, 4 AN-12's and 2 AN-26's (one being based at LPL). It's great hearing them droning over my house on approach, liked as always!
These Antonov turboprops sound so weird that people mistake them for “trumpets from the sky”. If Antonov builds a new turboprop cargo aircraft, it should be named “Trumpet”.
once we took off from some airport with an32 on 100 uprt and flight control noticed us that engine made tick black smoke, we answered them that their fuel is bad
A civilian... oooh look that smoke! That airplane had smoke! Antonov... nnnoooo Thats is just displaysmoke. We always put that in the engines for the awesome view. Civilain... Ooh, cool!
Used to watch a Mexican airline aircraft starting up. Think it was a Russian Vanguard look alike. Flames shooting out of the jet pipes. Many times complete stop and try agains. Guess the Flight Engineer had to get the fuel on lever just right or shut off and try again. Spectacular at night!!
Beautiful engines, however not the most "clean burning" ones. And still using an electric starter/generator for the inital engine spool and not bleed air! :)

A hot start wreaks havoc on those engines, wonder if repeated hot starts caused some of the smoking or if they filled it up with diesel instead of kerosene
Just like a ,499 Perkins diesel, turbine engines do not have mixture controls like a piston pounder ,instead has a fuel control unit feeding Jet A-1 to the burners turning the fuel to noise smoke and coolness, cannot say that about a FlyBe Fart Bus to Edinburgh.
It's not uncommon for any turbine to have flames out the tail pipe this aircraft's engines fuel control units are set at a specific gravity seting for high altitude operation as to supply more fuel to compensate for less air and then it probably flew into the airport where this was filmed and it was at a much lower altitude thus causing the engine's to smoke because they are running too rich. Anyway nothing is actually wrong with the A/C. Except it was built by the Ruskies! Lol.
They have been flying in regularly lately. I live four miles from the airport and heard one today thinking it must have just taken off. I checked Flightracket and it was at 21,000 feet having departed Prestwick Those engines sure are noisy, even at 21,000 feet
The AI-20 was a Turbo-prop, not internal combustion. The designer previously worked on piston engines but not for this powerplant. It's just old Soviet era technology. As mentioned very inefficient.
That is the small portion and the remnants of fuel burning in the turbine's combustion chamber at the high take-off power. In more modern engines, the combustion chamber/combustion can design has been optimized further and there is less smoke. For many jet engines, there was/is an upgrade available for the engines that improves the efficiency and lessens the smoke.

@@flugsnug what is your favorite airplane?
UR-CEZ was built in 1966, owner - AeroVis Airlines , operator - Cavok Air

*Ryanair would use this for Standing Flights*
And still manage to fit almost 200 people in.
I'd take standing Ryanair over most economy seats on any airline (not just Ryanair).
Imagine the environmental impact on the earth with that one flight!
it's the same as with modern airplanes. just here you see the smoke but the CO2 footprint is the same.
its almost look like the engine was about the blow up when the flames shooting out of the hole in the engine
just the way these very old engines don't burn fuel as well as they could
Best turboprop ever made.
Compared to a C-130? You're joking, right?
Q400, atr72 and airbus a400 are good turboprops

sequencing valves directing hydraulic pressure to the doors and various landing gear components. It's normal operation

Just a quick question when it gets upto cruising altitude is it still chucking out so much smoke or burning a leaner mixture . Just wondering.
I've seen many cruising at about 17000ft all with much less smoke visible than here.

What are Antonovs doing at Birmingham airport? What cargo are they delivering?
They drop in from time to time operating freight charters.
They've been there ages, I saw two an-26s and an an-12 a few weeks ago. Normal .
I believe a lot of their cargo is car parts for Jaguar Land Rover
