Really liked this style of presentation. Educational videos really thrive when they can stay engaging throughout the duration. Still learned a lot and I think there is plenty of room to teach more with this teaching method.

I'm sure I mustn't be the first to tell you this but... man you really are like a mini-Christian Henson! You two talk the exact same way, use the same vocabulary to express your ideas, and share the same mannerisms (the way you move your hands when you speak and slightly tilt your head to the side to put emphasis on certain words). Even your shooting styles when doing videos like this one seem to follow the same artistic directions. I totally get why he hired you at Spitfire, he must've felt like he'd found the one to pass on the torch! I'm glad there are two of you guys on Earth, keep doing what you do!

Hey Dan. Definitely one of my favourite videos from you. I like ur educational videos a lot when it comes to how you approach scoring. It always motivates me and also inspires me whenever I’m in a rut creatively. I have to say I miss ur long sessions where u just write something in 45 minutes however I know that must be exhausting to watch. These short version videos however are just as good as it keeps my engaged and also teaches me new things. Thanks for posting Dan and looking forward to ur next post!
Thanks Joshua. I forget how many people enjoy those real-time composition videos. It definitely takes longer to edit and put together, but people do enjoy them, so I'll return to this

Well done! I hadn’t even imagined the possibility of automating mic mixes. Thanks for expanding my (our) toolbox. As others have mentioned, the calm presentation is welcome in UA-cam world where so much is ridiculously hyped.
I don’t think of ideal presentation as a balance between education and entertainment. I’m just looking for education which is engaging. That doesn’t exclude entertainment. Guy Michelmore is a good example of a freewheeling, improvisational, comedic style which is also educational. Is it sometimes a bit too unplanned, loose, and over the top? Yes, but his personality is engaging. I appreciate him very much but I’m personally drawn to more sober presentation.
There’s also something to be said for consistency of presentation. Jono Buchanan is an excellent teacher who paces the introduction of ideas. His presentations are clear and concise, and he does the classic, “Here’s what we’ve learned today,” wrap up. It’s formulaic but that’s not a bad thing; the expectation of consistent format aligns the viewer’s receptivity. And the wrap-up consolidates the concepts into an easily-remembered package.
Your presentations are obviously more in the Jono style; measured, clear, and to the point. Attention is also paid to the amount of information the viewer can digest in the allotted time. All of that is very much appreciated by this viewer. Carry on!
I always go to the learning stage for me. I’m new to orchestrating and puzzled about such libraries are better and I listen and listen and learn. Your video was grade and everything was new and for me, I can’t hear stereo (deaf in one ear) but enjoy watching and learning from people like you, sir.

Excellent video! I'm still way early in the hobby of mixing and I've learned a great deal from this video that I've taken to trying it on my current and future projects! I think the format of the video is very well balanced between entertainment and education.
Honestly, I was listening to this video while I was working on setting up and organizing my track for the mixing phase and the information came at the right time as I got right into it.
Thanks for the great tips Dan, I will be trying them out. I'm pretty new to orchestration and VSTs so I see everything you (and many other Music UA-camrs) do as education, though within that there are obviously some, like you, whose presentation style clicks better with me. This slightly more focused tutorial is perhaps more suitable for teaching a particular trick like you do here, but I really appreciate the more conversational side of your other videos. In short - I think there's room for both. I shall be watching, and learning, regardless though. Keep up the excellent work, and thank you again.

I've been enjoying your presentations all along. But now, with this new approach, there is indeed a quality to them that removes some measure of stress or pressure that I hadn't even consciously noticed before. In other words: Your voice sounded great already, but now, with the milder and less 'insisting' - forgive me for this wording... - way, there is indeed an increase in listening and watching enjoyment - at least, where I and my 2 cents on this are concerned.
And I still get to learn a ton... great going! Thanks so much!

Absolutely beautiful video. I am here for education, however, having it be entertaining/beautiful to listen to is an absolute bonus.

Thanks so much. I feel like I'm onto something with this format. The thing I find hardest is titles and thumbnails though. Getting people through the door. It's like Christian recently said: content is 1/3 the video, 1/3 title, 1/3 thumbnail. In the same way that a bottle of wine relies on pricing and labels to sell it in the first place

Lovely film Dan. Slow start yet very beautiful sounds especially toward and at the end. I noticed immediately and do like the "soft" presentation style. I think most of us listen and watch alone so you don't need to project your voice as if to the last row in the balcony! It's a great string to have to your bow this style - and yet - Your high energy, more frenetic, composition in X minutes videos, with their sense of jeopardy and displays of flair and skills are also highly entertaining, as I've written before and mentioned to you face to face I think. All of your videos are educational too of course. How about a fly on the wall orchestration and recording session video at some point soon - or would that be too soon?
Thanks! Something I'd really like to work on is spending more time creating a score for each video. The music examples I show in these films are far too off-the-cuff, but it's a channel about music!! A fly-on-the-wall recording session would be great. Just a few hoops to jump through with rights and permissions, but would love to make that possible!
Excellent, very engaging. I really want to be able to play expressively like that too ... i'm not that tech savvy, so how would I use my Keylab 61 MkII to control the volume etc. of Labs BBC orchestra? I'm using Logic. I'm not clued in on the midi channel stuff ...
Just a note, I am afraid it is not very accurate to reduce we (humans) to left/right just because we have two ears. Our physiology has 2 active receivers (which are the ears) and many passive one. Sound is basically air pressure in various frequencies, hence, we can feel sound as well, physically. In regards to our ears, we have two (active receivers) but sound is being received from numerous sound sources, and our brains is capable of disclosing most of them due to our perception of acoustics, aka psychoacoustics.
Maybe a poor choice of wording on my part. Of course, I'm aware that much of our "3D" experience is down to complex calculations by the brain with reference to minuscule time delays, shadowing across the head etc

This was great. I can’t remember from whom I learnt it, but I often automate the mic signals in sample libraries to compliment the sound, almost like a poor man’s Aperture, I guess. It works wonders when those modulations are done in tandem with reverbs and delays, being careful not to make the mix sound too affected.
I really like the new desk set-up, the different camera angles, how you treated your dialogue, and how the whole thing flowed as one story. Of course I always geek out on interesting production techniques, but the survey you mentioned is totally true in that HOW those techniques are presented makes a huge difference to our enjoyment but probably also our retention. I would definitely encourage you to continue down the path of creative video techniques as it seems you’re already carving out your own niche musically, then why not visually as well.
Tip 2 was definitely a poor man's Aperture 😅 I wonder if there's a tool for Logic that can modulate send amounts using MIDI CC, so that the reverb send can grow as the dynamics build...🧐 Something I've also flagged with development is to make it possible to reverse MIDI CC directions in the Spitfire engine so that you can more easily fade up one library as the other fades down
@@DanKeenMusic interesting thoughts. I bet there’s a way. I don’t know enough about using LFOs and/or envelopes to do this, certainly not in realtime. I like how you’re thinking though.

Hi! Im having a massive problem with logic, whatever midi controller i use there are always 2 notes that dont work and sometimes if i press one of them at the same time as another note it repeats the note infinitely! This is incredibly frustrating as a composer! Can anyone help me out with this?!?

Thanks! It’s 27” and 4K. For just one monitor, I think I’d recommend 32”, as 27” sometimes feels a little small when working on big project files
