    I LOVE IT, nostalgic, hopeful, complex yet it simply makes me feel. To me it feels a bit like a stephen schwartz and danny elfman made a colab for a Tim Burton's directed Disney movie. Congrats Dan, beautiful piece and effective exercise! Cheers

      It's not necessarily that the FIRST idea is the best idea, but definitely proves that we throw a lot of great ideas away

    Beautiful composition, and thanks for the honesty in this vid. Good to see that you pressed in and through the temptation to start something new, something that I'm sure we all struggle with! Would you consider showing us how you go about un-muddying orchestral arrangements (maybe things to watch out for when building larger sections)? Building on what you mentioned around harmonies. Thanks as always.

      Thanks Paul! I really contemplated just HOW deep to go with this one. It’s tricky to balance “high-level inspirational” vs “actionable advice”. About 12 minutes of this edit is currently in an offcuts folder 😅 I’ll definitely return to this. I’ve got a deep-dive composition vid in the works at the moment which will be out in a couple of weeks

    It's interesting that, from 3:10-3:19, right after you said things can sound weaker with a lot of parallel movement, there was a sequence of parallel fourths, but in this case it was very tastefully crafted and beautifully harmonized! Keep up the good work!

    • @DanKeenMusic
      @DanKeenMusic  8 місяців тому

      Thanks! Parallel fourths feel different to me. Maybe it’s because they have different weightings within harmony? Would love any thoughts you have on this

    • @thegeometricpianist
      @thegeometricpianist 8 місяців тому

      @@DanKeenMusic To be fair you only mentioned octaves and fifths, and not fourths. However I thought music theory lessons advise against parallel fourths as well. Fourths are inversions of fifths, so that seems logical. A quick online search shows that parallel fourths are allowed unless formed with the bass. Parallel fourths sound nice when used in cascade, such as in your improvisation or in Mompou's Jeunes Filles Au Jardin. Happy New Year!

    Oh dear.. you have the perfectionist OCD disease I had. 😶‍🌫️ (and am still just figuring out now)
    In my case it’s very psychological. I have to kind of trick myself that if doesn’t matter as much. I have to be ok trying lots of ideas to try and make me think of it in a different way. I might put the track on several different trailers to test it, or you could use any appropriate imagery.
    For some reason what is confusing on one trailer I see it differently on another. Suddenly I can tell if something works or not, or if I need to add some part or double a sections length or something. Or i can suddenly see if something seems too busy, or sparse, or doesn’t build well enough. If it seems like it sort of worked on one trailer and I change it for another most of the time the changes makes it work on the original one. I’m working on a track right now that amazingly end up naturally hitting meaningful hit points entirely naturally for trailers I didn’t even try to write it too. Like I didn’t even care to make the tempo perfect when I started it just ended up working out that way
    I also try turning things off and hearing parts I never intended to hear isolated from other parts. Or I try to sketch out the whole thing without thinking too much with some kind of base down. Not the instrument bass, I mean anything! And have that base in some kind of sensible arrangement. ANYTHING, so long as it technically works. I tell myself I assume and expect to change it at any point, and usually do, as I get going. Broad brush strokes as much as possible.
    Just get stuff down as fast as possible, most of it, while thinking as little as possible, and assuming it will slowly crystalise and reveal the parts you want to keep as you go on.
    If you’re more interested in the notes 🎶 maybe do a little sketch of the parts you really like to get the idea down but just for your own reference. Then stop! You can’t focus on the tiny milliseconds of music for so long that you end up hating it, and not wanting to change, because you spent so long on it. I used to agonize on like 8 bars and build it up and then was thoroughly pissed off with it and had no objectivity anymore. I then couldn’t come up with any ideas on how to turn it into a track because I feel like I’d gotten so used to hearing it as this fully produced 8 bars. But it’s even worse because then when you try to add more, the new sections sound unproduced and unfinished. So it’s very unsatisfying and hard to tell if it really works until that’s all fully built up as well. Because of that it’s very hard to know what’s working and solidify the ideas.
    The best way is to be able to try and build up the whole thing as you go, so you’re not doing to equivalent of painting something and doing one single element, then trying to do the next section, then the next section. You never paint one section too fully so you still have some idea of what works in the rest of it, and you still have time to change it.
    If you don’t normally write to picture, I strongly suggest you find some video/a of something you do like that would fit the music you’re trying to do. I find it makes SO much difference.
    Anyway blah blah blah

    Hey Dan, great video! Would love to see your process of getting this into Dorico. I feel the same about composing in logic; much for focused on the sonic quality. I've found this often does not translate well to notation software. I'm always hopeful that Logic Pro will revamp their score editor!
