Kudos to the Western Pacific Railroad Museum and the Union Pacific Railroad for making this steam locomotive meet possible. Thank you, Dan, for being at Portola, California to document to meet so that we could see this historic event! (Posted 31 August 2024 at 1059 CDT.)
One imagines what the conversation between these two magnificent locomotives would be like: WP 165: "Oh, hello!! What's a famous and massive locomotive like you doing here meeting up with a little old engine like me???" UP 4014: "Well, I was in the neighborhood, and I thought I'd stop by to congratulate you on being fired up once more!!! Big or small, we both do our jobs well!!!!"
Great video! I was one of the main planners of the event at the museum. As you mentioned, this was the first time WP steam had operated in the main Portola Yard in over 70 years. You also got WP 165 and WP 1503 in the same frame. WP 1503 was the last switch engine the WP ever acquired and also operates, so you had the oldest and youngest operating WP switchers in the same shot. Thank you!
That's awesome! I believe my father Charles spoke with you for a bit during the event while I was filming this. I did not realize 1503 was the last switcher so that is great too!
Ok, now that's just plain cool 😎 Love the photo of you and your dad, what great memories for you both! Thanks Railfan Dad, this couldn't have been done without you!!!💖
I still like how Reading & Northern had #425 greet Nickel Plate 765. They had 425 on the siding with the local while 765 arrived with the mainline train. Beautiful moment in railroading, hearing the whistle salutes between them.
Steam engines and cabooses are my favorites to watch. So neat you were able to be there and see them both. And to meet Ed Dickens. I met him too when they came to Rochelle IL. this year but had no idea just who he was. But I sure do know now.
That museum is one of the best RR museums out there. It is neat that they were able to bring 165 out there into UP's yard for the event. 165 has a nice fat boiler too, for a switcher. It was neat to see the 1983 back at Portola too. I was lucky to be able to get to go inside the cab and sit in the engineer's seat when she was brand-new back in 2005, when she visited the museum. Another good one, Dan. 🤠👍
Yes it is! A working rotary snow plow and now a steam engine too! Yeah the 165 is actually a pretty good size for a 0-6-0! Oh very cool about 1983. Thanks a lot Scotty!
This is a very cool video with awesome shots. 4014 (biggest current locomotive operational) met one of the smallest standard guage steam locomotives operational. Like Big Boy meeting a member of the WP or UP family.
*Insert David Attenborough voice* "And here we see the older loco leave the yard to defend his territory." *Cut to Big Boy rolling up.* "A rival loco has wandered in with his harem of coaches following." "If the smaller loco wishes to keep his coaches from abandoning him for the rival, he must put on an aggressive display to ward him off." *WP165 does a blowdown while its whistle blares, the Big Boy blows its whistle in response but backs away down the track* "The rival, not wanting to fight, backs down. He leads his coaches away, continuing their travels."
Great video of a wonderful occasion, well done to all involved. As an Aussie, it’s great to see what’s happening in preservation over there, thank you.
Tell your parents I said hi!!!! Your dad hasn't aged a day since I last saw him!!!! It's great to see him! Good job overall, and keep up the great work! I'm not a fan of steam myself, but to see the meeting of the two steam locomotives to me was a must watch. Really good of UP to coordinate with the museum and allow the two locomotives to meet up like that.
Will do! Ha he will like to hear that. Thank you Mike. I'm glad you could enjoy this special one then. It is pretty unique that they brought these two together.
Outstanding video Dan. We did not get to attend that, but we were there the day before or that same day I'm not quite sure. Play good to see you in the video I do believe that we ran into you a couple times when we were there. Lol Gary
I do believe my dad is the reason the 165 still exists, he's the one that got it for the city of San Leandro and it was put behind the boys club and visible from Bart
The size difference between the two engines is incredible. 165 is like a toy compared to the Big Boy. It's great to see a 105 years old steam locomotive in action. What is the meaning of the two green flags on the nose of 165? I'm sure this was a very cool event and you really enjoyed it with your dad. Very nice footage again Dan, thanks for the rare pictures.
I know crazy size difference isn't it? I like that little engine though and think its way cool there is now a real working Western Pacific steam locomotive. I'm not sure why the green flags on the front. Thank you Z!
So Captivating. ❤ I am 74 now but I travelled back to my childhood when current Pakistan Railways first used to be called North Western Railways and afterwards Pakistan Western Railways. On holidays I used to go to Railway Station of my town to see these Black Beauties pulling passenger coaches occasionally releasing huge amount of steam. I still cherish those mesmerising sounds of honking and hissing. ❤
You have the best video documentation so far of the Westward Bound Tour. Will you be putting out a video of the tour from Roseville over Donner, and thru Truckee?
Well thanks so much! Unfortunately no I was not there for the run over Donner. I had to choose either that or the Feather River Canyon and I was much more interested in getting it in that canyon. I've got a couple more videos from time spent also filming it in Idaho and Wyoming on its way back to Cheyenne and then a massive video of all of these videos in one along with unreleased material.
Here's hoping that when PRR 5550 is finished, UP and the T1 Foundation can come to an agreement to have a meetup between the two titans of steam. ...probably wishful thinking, though.
It's like Dad and Dan .. The big boy and the little boy !! Train families are the best !!
Indeed! As a matter of fact I do believe these days ALL steam locomotives consider themselves family now, regardless of make, model and railroad 😄🙂🚂
😅 Indeed!

Little Boy faces off with Big Boy. Another great production from Railfan Dan. The music selection is soothing.
Thanks a lot!
Love that you got to be with your dad. Wonderful video--as always. Blessings to you and yours, Dan.
Me too! Thanks Miriam!
Once again well done. Thanks for doing these videos and giving us a chance to see these locomotives in action and meeting together.
It's my pleasure!
One of the smallest steam locos meeting the king himself!!
The setting sun made for some wonderful, natural, lighting effects on WP 165. Nice! +1
Ok, now that's just plain cool 😎 Love the photo of you and your dad, what great memories for you both! Thanks Railfan Dad, this couldn't have been done without you!!!💖

Thanks so much!
Very cool to see both W.P. loco's together! What a beauty 165 is! You offered us Great views, Thanks so much! (Dave).
Thanks Dave I thought folks would enjoy seeing this!
@@TheRailfanDan you're very welcome and yes indeed.

A 'once in a lifetime' opportunity, thanks for the experience and documentation. 🤘
I agree! Absolutely!

Very cool to be able to get 165 out on the U.P. Rails
It would be cool dream that #165 and 4014 hook up together back and forth. See them work together will be awesome
Great video! What an honor and joy to have been apart of this meet. 🚂💯

@@TheRailfanDan Portola, we saw you, tried to get up to you to chat, but to many people. Lol

I'm sure the flags could maybe mean they are like marker lights, green or red, but I'm not completely sure.
8:50 you can also see in the back a western pacific GS-64 tender which was actually once owned by the southern pacific and was in the GS-6 class.
Thanks!
Hey thanks very much! Much appreciated!
Thanks for sharing Dan really enjoyed this video
Thanks I'm glad you did!
WP 165: where are we going papa?
Engineer: to meet a big friend
UP 4014: hello there little fella!
although 165 is about 30 years older then 4014 ;-;
A little old mon
@@CoreytheATSFConnie well... Big Boy is indeed the big friend because he's big, but he engineer is the loco's papa lol XD

at 7:21 you can see a UP DDA40X for a brief moment. and also at 8:14
Awesome.
literally a JoJo moment
Bro who else thought this was a train sim? 😂
Anyone know what whistle the Western Pacific 165 was wearing? It sounds a lot like the Back to the Future Part III one.
4014 to 165: Distant cousin (because they were both built by ALCO) how's thing's?
165 to 4014: Good, great to be back in service.
