Nice to learn the differences of those Chrysler MAGNUM v8 blocks as it was fun to refurbish one here, with a Hughes Engines hi-torque SteamRoller EFI cam, to put into a 1998 Dodge RAM 1500 QuadCab 4x4 w/ 3.54 factory gears. These MAGNUM power-plants are overlooked by many folks as it isn't a "Hemi", but very reliable plus a tried & true design as many MAGNUMS (v6 too) are still on the road here in South Central Alaska. AWESOME VIDEO & Thank you!

You did your research brother! I'm sure a lot of new guys gettin' into Magnums will definitely find this video helpful! Oh, and for the Magnum 360's rectangular piston dish, it's 11cc. This matters most when configuring your compression ratio, as even 1cc can be critical in determining head gasket thickness and everything else. If ya can, cc a Mag 360 piston dish and verify the volume with a graduated syringe! My stock pistons were 11cc.

I have the 360 magnum in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it’s been an excellent engine. Just hit 185,000 today, actually. I also owned a 94 Dakota with the 318. It was still running with 215,000 when I sold it. The magnums are super reliable, just all magnum engines usually end up with a plenum intake problem. Other than that, they just keep running.

Since the magnum blocks and the la blocks are basically the same, they're designed to make more than 230-250 horsepower reliably with the best years for the la 360 making about 260 advertised (probably made more. Dodge has a history of doing that) before they were exclusively in trucks or vans. They can handle damn close to double their horsepower rating before you really gotta worry about your block getting Swiss cheesed.

The older, LA small blocks the 318 had 1.78 intake valves and the 360 had 1.88, early 340's had 2.02, later had 1.88. Port sizes on the 318 were smaller than the 340 and 360. Even though the intake manifolds would bolt up the runners wouldn't match, hurting airflow. Going from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel on a 318 would need a head swap.

Some where about 98 or 99 the pistons got a deeper dish than the pistons from the previous years. The rebuilder pistons also have the deeper dish. So the earlier magnum engines had a little higher compression.

To the best of my knowledge early magnums 93-95ish 5.2 and 5.9 used leftover stock LA blocks for the magnums, ( so on early magnums there should be no difference between 360LA and 5.9 magnum) andsome still had the oiling hole for the heads/valvetrain in them, they were tapped and blocked off, later blocks still had the boss for the oil, but was never machined.
Somewhere around the late 90's the casting was change and the magnum blocks are a bit lighter/ thinner.

Mopar performance and summit racing sell cast 360 cranks that are machined and balanced to bolt into a 318 (magnum or LA)
You can use the same stock LA connecting rods with shorter pistons. The magnum connecting rods usually need to have the small end machined for clearence with shorter pistons.
Both the 360 LA and magnums are externally balanced engines, and both are weighted differently. (LA harmonic balacer and flex plate or torque converter, will not balance a magnum, and vice versa)
Both the 318 LA and magnums are internally balanced, so are the aforementioned cranks, and the last time I checked the cast cranks are going for around $300.00 US.

      No problem.
Decades ago it was common enough for race shops to take a 360 crank and turn down the main journals to fit a 318, but, nowadays it costs more to have one turned, and balanced properly than to just buy a ready to go one.
And with a stock 318 bore, the 360 crank will give you around 344cid.
I am not overly familiar with a 318 poly, so I don't know if there is an affordable good style aftermarket piston for that engine.
Good luck to you and if you don't mind, let us know what you find out.

LA,318,340,360, are all different castings, I don't know about the 273.
Early magnums used left over LA blocks, with the oiling hole for the heads/valvetrain tapped and blocked off, or later on the boss is still there but was never drilled.
Somewhere in the late nineties the casting was changed so that the magnum blocks are slightly thinner and lighter than the LA

I had a 360 motor in my Chrysler Cordova I really wasn't that impressed with the motor I think 340 is by far the great motor. My brother had a Plymouth Fury 3 was a old cop car with a 440 Mag in it pursuit motor that thing turned on on the highway

I have a 340 bare block with one sleeved cylinder. I was going to build it, but happened upon a free 360 Magnum complete, running engine. I'm located in Iowa for reference.

    A 340 would eat up a 318 & the 360

YES!!! You are going to provide us with a 318/340/360 dyno shootout? Same heads, cam, intake and compression ratio!!! I’m so looking forward to this!!!!

@@TheGasTap I ran some numbers, did some math, results show the 360 displaces more cubic inches than the 340.

      ill take a 318 over a 340 any day. i never cared about them. why build a 340 when i can build a 360?

Got a question. I’m looking to do a Magnum swap in my 86 D100. I have just recently read where the magnum engines have their pistons over .060 down in the hole at TDC. Being that far in the hole plus the head gasket thickness, leaves zero quench. Have you ever addressed this with any of your builds? If so, how? Decked the block, taller compression height pistons, etc?
    Thanks!

I haven’t done any machine work to my engines and they all run great. My d150 runs 12.71 in the 1/4 with a cam and carb intake. 3500lbs. 3.55 gear

It's better to build the 318. Bore it to 4" and yes it will take it and it's basically a 340 with AM heads

Everybody so hard on the 340 because they went broke building them. I'm a car guy and love mopar stuff; but LS still best motor for building.
