We're using Novare through Classical Academic Press. After watching some CAP Q & A videos with Dr. Mays, I was convinced of his method for teaching Science.
We started with my oldest in 8th grade. She's now in 9th grade and is really enjoying Intro to Physics using Dr. Mays' video course. If it were only up to me and my poor science skills, I doubt my kiddo would be so excited about Physics.
My soon to be 6th grader is excited to begin Novare soon (6th grade is Life Science).

Thanks for sharing your experience with it! Do you feel it is more advanced?

We have been using their new Life Science for 6th grade this year. I definitely think it is advanced in the expectations for assessments, that is, basically weekly cumulative short-essay quizzes. I’ve had to provide increasing guidance for my daughter as the year has gone given the amount of time I’m willing for her to spend on studying for the material. That is, I now give her the topics for the quiz so she can review those sections, in particular, and then we sit down and talk about what a thorough answer would look like. She then types up a draft with the five short paragraph answers she wants to study. I check over those and then she studies those. I am happy with the growth in her skills over the year even with this “handholding” for her as an 11 year old. I have no doubt she would find multiple choice, identify, fill-in-the-blank assessments much much easier, but we are getting composition practice in with our science while being realistic about how much time she has for cumulative review on top of her other commitments. I think she is going to end this year with a strong foundation in life science basics where she’s achieved their stated focus of avoiding the cram-forget cycle. The course is not as detailed in some topics as some other middle-school curricula in areas like cellular respiration where I noticed the term “Krebs cycle” is not introduced, for example. I think that is totally fine for 6th grade and also precisely what is explained in the preface where it is explained that they are focused on a core of the most important content to be mastered and actually remembered to form the foundation for future learning. I think Novare is an excellent choice for parents who agree with the principles and perspective of the creators.

I hope they continue with the creation of videos to go along with Novare science. So far there is just a video course for Introductory Physics (9th grade).

@@laurenm.6320 Is the typing part required or is that something that you guys include on your own? Im looking at Novare Life Science for my upcoming 6th grader.

You have really done your research so that so many of us don't have to. There were a lot on your list I simply didn't know about but would now consider. Thanks for this video!

Ive uaed a variety of middlw school science ( im on my 4th mifdle schooler). We have chosen Gods design from masterbooks. We do it at our co-op. I like the level of it so it doesn't go over the kids heads ( I felt Berean builders did). It has lots of labs so they only do some of them. I also like that among the books they will get a solid base in the different disciplines of science before heading to high school science.

We attempted Berean Builders years ago and it was definitely harder. We didn’t last too long with it. 😂 I haven’t used Masterbooks Science in the middle school age. We did recently go back to their elementary science for my younger girls and we are enjoying it

We are considering Berean Builders for science next year.

You're awesome! I know I said I was looking into Elemental Science, but after joining their FB group, I'm reconsidering lol So this is AWESOME! I will have a 7th grader next year 😅

@@schultesweeties I may be jumping the gun 🤣 I get so frantic picking curriculum but by mid year I’m like eh, it’s fine haha basically some people were criticizing aspects of it and other people jumped on and agreed. However; the comments were from a couple of years ago and they may have fixed these things. I also have sassafras and have yet to try it. At this point, I’m thinking I should just use up what I already have lol I am really also being drawn to science shepherd. The idea of videos is super tempting.

@@TeachingTinyDisciples I am the same way with picking curriculum too. I was doing the same thing the other day about History. We use Rabbit Trails, but I'm not always great on going on the Rabbit Trails,so I felt like we needed something else. I was half tempted to just go and get a new curriculum. I finally decided to calm myself down and just use Story of the World since we have it already lol :) The videos in Science Shepherd are definitely a nice thing! That's why we went with Science Mom this semester for my oldest. She even said after a few lessons she could see herself continuing this as a Science next year! That is great coming from a non science lover.
