A thought for the stem repair. If you roll out some putty and put it through a small hole in the top you could use a wooden spoon to flatten the inside against the top. Need to save up and make a purchase or two from you!

They are usually warm weather plants, so think along the lines of planting them when you would tomatoes... Otherwise, they do not require much care at all...
