It's worth noting that tuning both E's to D will remove a lot of tension from the guitar neck. I find that this usually throws the strings that you aren't tuning a little sharp (especially the B string)

Why would they snap when you're tuning down?? Even when your tuning back up,it's not enough to cause ant tension thats gonna case strings to snap unless you biught strings for uinder a pound made of god knows what. I always tune to drop D and double dropped D with brand new strings and never once had a string snap on me.Just avoid using elastic bands as strings and you'll be fine.

excuse me sir, a little correction double drop d tuning, is basically tuning down. if you broke a string by doing so, then you're doing it the wrong way.
Isn't that just normal drop d? Double drop d would be an octave below that.

That'd be Drop D1, which is what Black Tongue tunes to. I'm also experimenting a bit with this tuning myself.
Drop D would be only tuning the 6th string (low E) down.. double drop is both E strings down to D
